It’s funny to me how people who work around football, specifically the NFL, develop this accent that I’ve never heard outside of listening to people talk about football. It’s like how pilots all speak similarly on announcements with pauses and “uhhs”.

Great insight. I’m still baffled that there are only 20ish Bonafide QBs in the world. Not throwing shade at the other 12 starters they just struggle. That’s just how good Defenses are in the NFL. Example: Josh Rosen, he’s real good right? He’ll blow me out of the water but he can’t get a starting QB gig? Amazes me.

I'd love to see how them break down game film for a few players. You see amazing college players that aren't able to do anything in the NFL and, in retrospect, you can see how they were exploiting situations in college that just don't translate to the pros (not to name names (Manziel)). To be able to see and understand it in advance is definitely a skill.

Well you just go back and look at Clemson vs Bama a few years back. One team was full of pro ready supposedly WR and then when they got to the show, where they at now? But the wideouts for Clemson doing ok. They were doing it to a pro style defense. Clemson defense was trash, so Bama was exploiting that defense. Bad matchups. That’s all it is. You watch the film and cut that wide open space out of the equation and ask yourself all things being equal who is making the catch and who isn’t.

@@nofurtherwest3474 I don't think he said that at all. In order to succeed in the NFL, you need both extreme athleticism and skill AND high sports IQ. Players that only have one generally don't last. Which is why the jumps and drills only tell part of the story. Brady was a remarkably skilled passer and decision maker. The fact he was slow as dirt didn't really matter to the way he played.

And I thought I really knew my stuff! Some of the guys I personally thought/predicted would be great as of the last few years were just DK Metcalf & Christian Watson (so far). This year I think it's Quentin Johnston. I didn't think Patrick Mahomes would become THAT good and thought Rashad Bateman would be great. So there's some hits and misses with me too! Out of the QBs in the 2023 draft, I think Stroud might make a better impact! So, when I come back to check this post in the future, I'll know if I sucked on my drafting prospects! Lol 😁

I like that tablet you’re using. Any idea what brand it is?

Two points: 1) There was no mention of statistical analysis/AI/machine learning. This makes me think either this is a profession open to disruption from machine learning or this is a type of a trade secret that shouldn't be mentioned 2) The average NFL player plays three seasons. This is significantly less than for baseball or basketball. So, whatever metrics are being measured, it's probably likely that it should be measured on a scale that it exponentially decreases per game.

Do any teams use ai to analyze prospects?

Obviously scouts have a lot of work to do, great teams are getting 2-3 quality starters each draft, while bottom feeders get 0-1 each year. Also, the production from players range drastically each year from the rounds they are drafted from, you have first round busts, but then late round picks that carve our productive careers for ten plus years. The combine is mostly a joke, as everyone is great athlete, as DJ admitted in the video, its more about the intelligence, leadership, character, coachability, etc. All of that is determined in private meetings with the team, like the top 30 visits mentioned in the video.

Translation: We make guesses based on our inability to actually play the sport, so it’s totally up to the player if they live up to what we conjecture they are.

They like to pretend this is an exact science, but don't let them fool you. Drafting the right players is as much luck as it is skill. YOU could literally do this job right now just as well as most NFL scouts, assuming you're willing to work long hours and stay focused. My wife, who watches very little football, could draft as well as some of these franchises. Make no mistake, the only thing separating you from Daniel Jeramiah and any other NFL scout is who you know and the access to players, teams, associated personnel that their position grants them. That's literally it.
