Get the soul stealer spell ASAP so you can heal Malekith in battle. I'd also grab a death hag for some extra replenishment too.

Did you have enough movement for an ambush? Set up an ambush on the opposite site of the settlement from the direction they are coming from, just barely inside the zone of control so you are as far away as possible but still able to defend, this lowers the chance you will be discovered. They will send a much smaller force to attack the settlement without knowing you are waiting to reinforce the settlement. Smash that army and go from there.

a battle that ends in a cluster f*** feels so much more real to how field battles for real play out.

I'll take a field battle over a settlement siege 9 out of 10 times, purely due to the nonsense AI routing.

Anytime I run into a battle with multiple stacks on either side like this, I take it. Regardless of the predicted outcome. They are simply too epic and are so rare. Also, I'm a big believer in decisive battle theory, so seeing these kind of engagements just reeks of potential 😁

Wow, this is probably the most epic battle I've seen Legend do, straight out of Warhammer lore pretty much!

The AI sometimes acts incredibly smart and then sometimes absolutely stupid. Mostly playing in hard I’ve seen feats of Sun-Tzu proportions and then other times I have 2 full dwarf stacks just sitting there while my lord lands on top of them to take out their cannons. But they do shoot at your single entities all the time and it’s actually a good strat, huh.

Tbh. ‘Smart’ is most likely just a coincidence. The A.I is inexcusable dumb generally speaking.

I love my big battles. The solution I've found is to simplify them. Rather than thinking of 6 infantry units, 6 ranged units and 4 cavalry units, I often treat them as just one infantry group, 1 ranged group and 1 cavalry group by grouping them up. The only units I'll micro manage are lords and spellcasters. I really struggled with those big battles until I started simplifying them.

The thing that annoys me the most is whenever I give an army of mine to the Ai, somehow, someway, they find a way to kill the lord 100% of the time I have always given said army to them.

The problem is that AI range units ALWAYS attacks lords and heros first, but friendly ai always charges with them into the enemy instead of holding back

7:00 When shit gets crazy. 10:24 Murderous prowess pops. 20:23 Army loses.

I remember I had a battle like this on Attila, was very cataclysmic and intense, but this looks even more intense with the addition of magic and dragons

I remember having modded attilla with kingdoms 1212 and a AI and reinforcemente overhaul and it was great, battles were lesse common but they were wuge when them happened, sometimes it was 10K X 10K, this made every single one of them very important

I agree, in my “hard” campaigns the enemy almost always are able to dodge spells, if they are not in combat. The very hard battles seem bugged.

I was about to say exactly the same thing, when he dropped the burning head on that stationary infantry unit with nothing pinning it there I was sure they would move out of the way, instead the unit just got completely deleted.

I have watched literally thousands of your videos and I've never seen a battle of this magnitude. This was epic. I've no idea how you managed it. Nice 😁

I do think Legend you're onto something with your point at 5:30 about the AI behaviour on lower difficulties. I do tend to see the AI acting far more recklessly than in these videos, and IMO that actually works to the player's deficit since there's less time to make decisions and you're under pressure almost immediately.

If you want to have similar battles to this one then i recommend a mod called "call allied warband" which can teleport allied armies next to you. This can set up huge battles, specially during end game scenarios,

Bro if this was the 1st total war video i ever saw id be both excited and scared to try it. Sick battle!

These battles are always my favourites, even if they're tough as nails. My most recent one was an absolute slugfest as Eltharion against Belegar, essentially an archer line vs a gunline with massive infantry clashes all through the middle and constant hero fights.

Never get tired of hearing Sisters of Slaughter and Witch Elves charging and screeching

after so huge battles i love to look over the battlefield after the fight just to see where all the corpses are. Sometimes there are some neat storys you can imagine that happend here and there. As example i look to huge dead beasts or go and look after the fallen lords or just how big the overall fight was that is painted in dead corpses. Its so good sometimes.

I know I'm weird, but I love huge battles like this in my campaigns, but I play on lower difficulty so I can pause and actually micro everything somewhat correctly. My battles might take longer, but it's a lot of fun having like 10 things to manage at once when you have the time to do so.

You rarely get battles like this anymore because the AI is so cowardly

Speak for yourself. You're either playing the wrong factions, doomstacking all your armies and/or playing on a lower difficulty. Try out Norsca if CA actually fixes Monster Hunts in 3.1 or play as Kislev or Kairos on Legendary. I've had to fight off multiple stacks from Azazel and Thrott, Astragoth and later Archaon's bitch ass stacks of nearly all regiments of renown because he hated me taking back territories the Chaos stunties already took from me. Then later Katarin, Kostaltyn and Roppsman Clan once I beat back the turncoat Chaos factions. I quit that campaign because once I had room to breathe, I did my first monster hunt and it bugged out so I couldn't select the next one. As Kislev, it was a never ending war against first Azazel and Sarl, then Thrott, Throgg, Wulfrik, Daniel and later Archaon and his Norscan simps while Festus had just declared war. Kairos was a brutal saga against Volkmar, Repanse, Teclis, Tilea (Southern Realms mod so it's not a weak Empire faction) Thorek, a ton of lizards and finally Belegar and a 30 settlement deep Thorgrim. It was insane but very satisfying once I finally got some generic lords leveled up, broke through and started making progress capturing and holding territory.

I don't understand how people say this. Enemies only retreat from what would be devastating defeats, and they can check balance of power just like you can. What do you want? The AI to blindly suicide into your doomstack so you can just autoresolve it anyway? Just like you, the AI doesn't want to throw away their armies for free.

@@bigquazz3955 Well if you remember very high/legendary difficulty in warhammer 2 you'd realize that AI has massive upkeep/recruitment cost reductions and can spam loads of armies. They dialed it down in warhammer 3 so now the ai will recruit like 2-3 stacks and then just sit there instead of expanding like in warhammer 2.

There are few races that can do battle like this just fine. Most of them being melee focused factions like Warrior of Chaos, Khorne, Nurgle and VC for example, and that is where started to like bad guys lol.

Perfect Vigor goes a long way too for marathons like this. I think Sigvald can get it, maybe some Aspiring Champions? Some of Bretonnian elite knights. This is making me want to look up who has it.

@@Shane2020xxx You can have Perfect Vigour on Undivided Chosen and Sisters of Slaughter by Crone Hellebron too. I think Greenskins can give Nasty Skulkers that trait via scrap upgrade as well. Sartosa Free Company does have it too albeit it's leadership dependent.

I fucking love playing (and watching!) big messy battles. I don't even care if I lose them they're so fun.

@@Lockerus After such a big battle the game has to do processing which takes more cpu power and that in turn affects other software, in this case his recording software.

Really carnage. A great watch.

I have always kinda felt that the AI plays slightly differently for me vs how they play for Legend. Can’t put my finger on it exactly but I distinctly remember feeling that way after a couple of videos over the years.

Ai behaviors change with battle difficulty, you didn't mention it so maybe you are not playing on very hard battles? Also ai change: if you are attacking or defending, if it thinks you have or not artillery or range superiority

I play mostly VH/VH and a little L/VH, and I also experience AI acting different for me than what I usually see vs Legend, with similar types of armies. I’d say that it often acts even slower/stupider.. I Do set up a bit differently, but I usually get to blast almost half an army away before any reaction of ANY kind.. abit boring from time to time…

I’m not sure what magic-bug either. If it’s the “infinite mana” that some people experience, I don’t get that on Legend/VH or VH/VH. I will “regularly” have enemy mages spend all their mana, casting shot at my flyers, and then land them behind/among trees, so they don’t get hit. And at some point, they always stop casting, and never resume, or only cast 1-2 more spells when the actual battle begins. The only bug I’ve been aware of, is my speedy units, like bats or doggos will very often slow down to be slower than fragging zombies.. not even talking walk-speed… it’s like zombies with Melkoths myst miasma, and curse of years speed debuffs on them..

yeap coc this is why u have group control, for these chaotic battles. also always keep an eye on the unit cards on the bottom so no heroes or units get faked without u seeing it

You mention the ai behavior being "easier", or seemingly so, in VH battle difficulty and honestly that explains some of my experience when it comes to learning from you and applying it to my hard difficulty battles. AI behaves much differently a lot of the times for me. For example, I was shocked that your Burning Head at 5:10 wasn't dodged. I have literally never seen the AI not dodge a spell when they aren't pinned in melee in my games. I've written it off as impossible to land any spell otherwise.

I've definitely gotten Burning Heads off on VH battles and Normal battles. For me, it seems like the spell matters and how it's launched. Like if it's from above, the AI will almost always try to dodge but if it's from below or a wind spell, I can almost always get it off.

you have to wait until they are shooting. When they are shooting they will not dodge. learned it from legends but i could never replicate it bymyself because they behave very diffrently even on very hard battle difficulty on my side.

I think the post battle report and loading was bugged. Your 2nd army that had the darkshards showed half of the Darkshards got wiped out but at the end of battle you'll see that all but one were in decent shape. Yet Postbattle report showed half of them got wiped out which is completely wrong.

I personally would still launch the attack, this battle was amazing 🤩🤩😍🤩.... Is there any chance I can get the save file I would love to fight it🥰

I don't know how you can keep up with so much without pausing. I spend 3/4ths of my battles paused figuring out what to do. =P

This why I use pause and slow time and also to zoom in on the action for some cool shots. Game is more fun that way.

Without a single doubt in my mind, even now 10 months later; The AI is absolutely more aggressive on Hard and normal difficulty than very hard and it really does make it more squirrelly. You can use that to your advantage as well, but that's the case for any AI level if you can consistently predict the majority of the pattern(s).

Question, either for you or for anyone in the comments who's willing to unironically help: Is there anything you'd recommend to make the leap from "I sorta know what I'm doing, consistently win Normal campaigns but no harder" to "I actually know what I'm doing, and I can consistently win Very Hard/Legendary campaigns?" Maybe a series where someone goes through a campaign and explains why they're doing what they're doing?

Are you struggling with battles or campaign on higher difficulties? Pick a faction first then watch a bit of Legend's streams or disaster battles if you're struggling with those. He's much clearer and concise during disaster battles and offers excellent reasons for his actions. Even if you're not playing on Legendadry, his streams are worth watching because you get the campaign tips and he verbally weighs options on their positives and negatives quite often.

watching the shades and darkshards just stand there is infuriating. CA needs to address the fact that even though they have a clear line of sight and aren't being harassed, ranged units still won't shoot unless ordered to do so

N kari can make shitloads of money with the sword of khaine because of the public order penalties, even with the increased upkeep. However you need to build walls on your major settlements to autoresolve the constant rebellions. The witstealer sword is shit, sonetimes I don't even do the quest because I barely observe any serious difference.

I swear sieges in hard battle difficulty the AI actually defends the important points now, and sends only a couple of missile units to the walls. Before I could cheese em with positioning and fast units. Then I see you play on very hard and they do the same derpy shit they used to. It would actually be quite a CA move to patch the AI and forget to implement it on the VH battle level leaving them derped out in the mode they should be the smartest.
