The Shasta-Trinity Backcountry Discovery Trail

In June 2020, Overland Trail Guides set out with a small group of friends to map the Shasta-Trinity Backcountry Discovery Trail. Our adventure begins in Ruth Lake, and concludes on the north-eastern flanks of Mt Shasta. The complete route guide along with map and gpx files can be found at:

Be sure to check the route status on our forums. Mud Creek near Mt Shasta is currently impassable.

Great video and your website is awesome! I'll definitely be using it when planning my trips. Will there be videos for the other BDT routes?

We've got footage for the Kofa Pioneer Trail and Lost Coast 4x4 trail. Hopefully we'll be able to put out videos before Spring rolls around.

Wonderful content!!! Thank you very much for all the info. Route doesn’t seem too troublesome/unstable (minus that one section near the lake). Do you think it can be done as a solo trip?

So first off I want to say this is a great video but I had a question. In your original podcast you said that you could download the maps for free but then some of the route that you have, including this one, show a subscription fee? So is some of your content free and others a charge?

Hey cbtech, Thanks for catching this! We were playing around with some settings in the site and looks like we forgot to roll this back. If you go back to the Shasta-Trinity page, you can now access it for free. Regarding monetization of content, this will likely occur at some point down the road to help support the cost and time of maintaining the site + creating new content.

Is it possible to take just part of the trail? Are there exist points or would you have to back track?

@@OverlandTrailGuides Thanks! How many miles in from the start? Also from the video, it appears my stock Gen 3 expedition could handle the route. Would you agree or not? Thanks for the content and I am a subscriber :)
