The Shah of Iran, last interview with David Frost, January 1980 in Panama

Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Frost was the last person to interview Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the deposed Shah of Iran. The interview took place on Contadora Island in Panama in January 1980, and was broadcast by the American Broadcasting Company in the U.S. on 17 January.
The Shah talks about his wealth, his illness, the SAVAK, the torture during his reign, Khomeini, his threat of extradition to Iran and draws a summary of the current situation in Iran.

He failed the silent majority in his country. Thats why he had to leave power. He could have acted like Sadaam, got all his key opponents killed. Khomeni included who was in France. French even offered to assist but as you can hear him say, his rule, monarchy could not be ruled with blood. He refused those tactics of a dictator. He was a king who loved his people. Now you may not be a Shah fan, but All Iranians should respect him for not being like Sadaam and holding on to power. The masses wanted change, for the better or the worse, and they got it!

The Shah, may God have mercy on him, had many mistakes, the most important of which was that he was not willing to give up any powers to the government or parliament, and he appointed the head of SAVAK to the position of deputy prime minister, so that the government’s security grip would be strong over those who opposed it!!! I'm just saying that if he had agreed to become a constitutional monarch like Britain and Sweden and allowed a truly liberal political life, the extremist Islamists would not have been able to exploit the Shah's dictatorship and overthrow him.

The Shah wasn't toppled by the people. Iranian clerics were traditionally instrumentalized by the West to shut down his sovereignty. Actually, most mullahs and ayatollahs had strong connections to the British government. That's why some of Shah's opponents were given arms and weapons. And they were the ones who occupied Iran. These occupiers were affiliated to Levantine Arabs and they were not Iranians. Matter of fact, Palestinians were brought to Iran with weapons, and they killed Iranian protestors.

The hostage crisis too was a handiwirk of the Roosevelt CIA - agents, exactly as they did in 1953..... U see Mr Frost, the cancer - metaphor, the so called diagnosis confusion etc... early seventies, Baangaali babu, phenomenally succesful - inspite of his shoe string tight fin budget, the onky n first reigning super star then for 5-6 yrs, n his succesor together were cast in 2 epic films.... one on Cancer & the other on the trade union / labour movement... Precisely Mr David Frost... the toxicest cancer had proliferated fast n furious all over SE & SW - Asia, entire India, except perhaps the Southern geography ( or the Eastern, if u look at the Indian map laterally) relatively unscathed, on the contrary, riding piggyback on - scavenging parasiting over the burgeoning mushrooming populatiin explosion, compoundee by the torrential influx of the migrant refugees - - the so calked 1971 liberation - hacking of East n West pakistan into two - inevitable fait accompli - exactly 25 yrs pist 1947 - 15 th August (, independence day - India & Pakistan) absolutely unimaginably crazy, insane partition & clubbing if East & West Pakistan - remote locations into one..! by Lord Mount batten n the wily Malabari /Madrasi /Hyderabadi ( invisible - obscured) aides - to the INC much maligned n tarnishedc giants !! V P Menon for instance - one secretary to the tallest martyr - Barrister Sardar Patel..!!! Everything that happened in Iran, Mr Shah, post 1941 n in particular post 1953 couo, ousting ur PM - Mohammad Mossadegh has a direct bearing on the entire sub continent.... The silent coup - d-teat by the CIA, KGB, MI5 over entire sub continent, is palpably clear if only one bothers to look at events from the NW ie Iran in particular & the NE - geography ie Burma in partivular.!!! The cancer fount is not only Kashmir - - mfd crisis by the Brits while "leacing" but the ewually if not bigger cancerous growth in the Burma n surrounfing geography..... the Brahmaputra river in particular apart from Ganges & the Narmada rivers... Why n how was the name of ur country changed to Iran, Mr Shah...? We're nit Arabs, Julia... in school u'd hv learnt of the Persian gulf.... yeeaah, not the Arabian gulf it is called... given the tumultous history of over 3000 yrs, my father decided to change the name to Iran in March 1935, by requesting foreign delegates assembled in Iran to accept the name... And the Govt of Burma Act 1935, confirmed the partition of Burma frim India, on April 1, 1937...! Yet why Iran ? does it not sound like I - ran...? does it Julia..? what else does it sound like... N ari.... R ani.... N air... Anir... Nari is female... Rani is Queen... Nairs are the Malabariz - deep down south.... whats... A nir? Anir is the dry fruit - F I G... if one adds the missing... alphabet.. J between n & i... Aaaahhh... the (Afghani / Kashmiri) Fig...!!! Besides there's a deep connekt between u ie the Shah of Iran & the Queen, the Nari ie the Fig & above all the Malabariz - ie the Rains, ooopps, the Nairs - -n the Krishna Menons, the famous Agri revolutiinary - M Swaminathan n Justice Krishna Iyer...!!! besides ur extremely friendly neighbourhood Mr Shah....!!!

Pardon me Mr Shah, for the digression, but hope u'll excuse me... not at all.... very valid & pertinent, relevant points, Julia.... Well u mentioned of not subscribing to the destiny or fate cards, however, if one looks back in time, to the era of early 20th century, 1905 onwards when ur father, then in the Iranian Army in the Qazag dynasty reign, rose from the ranks to take centre stage - during the Constitutional crisis confronting Iran... ( 1905-11)... Yess.. exactly... u see Julia... it was a time prior to the WW1 - when the two major global powers - Gr Britain & Russia, both were contesting for supremacy over this geography - ie Persia - - the great game for the colonising supreme powers - then, eventually agreeing to carve out their spheres of influence - - Russia in the North & Gr Britain, in the Southern Persia... given the geo strategic importance of strengthening its grip over its jewel crown - the sub continent from Afghanistan onwards to the southernmost tip ie Ceylon & Maldives/Mauritius.... Before we move onn to the Oil price hike saga in the early 70z & the resultant bumper abnormal windfall gains to Iran's treasury... going back once again to the early first decade in the 20th century... The sugar price fiasco,? Some traders, merchants & mullahz had taken refuge in Tehran in 1905 & were agitatung against a price hike... They eventually moved onn to the southern city... And it was then in 1903 that the British EIC had set up the first sugar mill in Partappur ( nr Allahabad).... U must also keep in mind of the fact of the abnormal price hikes in food grains later in the sixties n seventies by the western powers... while I am being accused of weaponising the Oil, to our advantage... U see Julia, what was the steep price hike in Wheat &, other food grains by the US & Canada then? Are they dependent on irrigation canals? don't they've abundant rainfalls from the skies to fulfill alm their requirements? And yet they chose to weaponise the foodgrains by imposing a stupendously steep hike in wheat prices... u'd recall the food price shock back then..... n the adverse affect it had on the poorly developing regions? Why should the Oil resources endowed regions be not allowed to benefit from the only resource nature has endowed in abundance...? Well, it has a number of perspectives... The first point is why the colonisers chose to exploit the Oil resources in their occupied col9nies, which had been comoletely stripped n scavenged upon by the time they gratuitously chose to "leave" supposedly, granting independence to its col9nies one by one gradually withdrawing.... for the simple reason Julia, by then, the reason for their personal presence was no more required.... given the revokutionary rail-road transport, communication developments they could very well continue to operate the levers of power seated in their luxuriously air conditioned climes... !!! Secondly, where was the black gold ie Oil rush, struck first? In the NE - Burma - - - the Burmah-Shell - Anglo - Amerikan projekt... JV - Rockefeller & hus German - european partners.... And the total destruction of the Burmah - shell Oil fields by the Britishers in 1941/42... ostensibly to pre empt it from falling into invading Axis power Japan's control...! or was it something more devious... U could refer to the famous litigation of Burmah - Shell vs Lord Advocate in the House of Lords - post 1945..... Damages claim by the Burmah - Oil "proprietor"....! And nxt u'd aks me, who indeed was the "proprietor" of this Oil & Gas company ....? That in turn raises many more pertinent n most intriguing issues relating to Iran / Persia - vis-a-vis, Gr Britain, Germany, US, n in ur neighbourhood.....

So it was *the liberalization program* of Iran in the mid 70s that helped the revolution of 79 happen in Iran. And the fact that the Shah couldn't suppress the revolutionaries(the minority) by killing millions of them helped the revolution more. he could kill all the revolutionaries easily, but he just believed that's not the right thing to do for a king to his people. so he just easily left the the country & hand it to the Ayatollahs. So from one hand the Shah himself helped the revolution to happen (the liberalization program), & from the other hand he didn't suppress the revolution. So both energized the revolution tremendously. So that was why it was so easy for the Ayatollahs to take over the power in just one year. even the Ayatollahs we're shocked at the time that how easily they came to the power considering the silent majority.

Killing Iranians, even his own critics, would have resulted in the type of resentment these degenerated occupiers/invaders have harboured in Iranians today. The Shah had respect for his people. He was a good man, but an idiot at the same time. He was so in love with his own thoughts and agenda that he dismissed all the smart men and women around him telling him years before the cursed islamic revolution that he should have a monarchy like England. That he should decrease his responsibilities and give that to the parliament and a democratically elected prime minister. But No! He wanted to rule and he wanted to implement his will on every damn thing even on who gets into national wrestling team! I mean WTF man! If that is not dictatorship then what is? He was without a doubt a patriot with good intentions but also a narcissistic fool thinking that he knew best and everyone else were idiots. Sadly, we all know how that turned out.

Not true. There was nothing wrong with his agenda. He was about to catapult Iran next to G7 countries and it was already reached until the West decided otherwise. He was abandoned by people on his own team. The West didn't want him and they kept vilifying him 24/7.. which is very CLEAR today. Now more than ever. Also the islamists were not as threatening back then as Communists, since the Soviet was right around the corner and have attempted to get their hands on Iranian land many many times in history. The Islamic trash came all from England and were created intitially by the Brits to combat Iranian nationalism.

@@hmi1601 which part of what I wrote wasn't true? Did I say something was wrong with his agenda? Didn't I say that he was a patriot? I basically said that he was a DICTATOR. A dictator is a person who forces his/her will(good or bad) on other people. Whether his agenda was good or bad is irrelevant here, he indeed was forcing his will on millions of people and people abandoned him because of that.I'm not denying the role of western countries in the islamic revolution but his role and his mistakes facilitated the whole thing. It is in human nature to want to be free. Islamic republic is basically doing the same, it wants to force people to go to heaven, now is going to heaven a bad thing(if one believes in such a place)? No! But people don't want to be forced to do anything, good or bad! That was the problem, he was a fool for not understanding that he needed to step down earlier. When you have a person on the top of the pyramid for so long , by targeting him you can easily shatter the whole system. If he was a bit smarter and less power hungry, instead of being the head of the government and everyone answering to him, he could've made a system with separation of power to make the government stable enough so that it wouldn't fall apart easily even if he wasn't there. Right now the islamic republic is the same shit. Power comes from only one source and the closer you are to that source the better off you are .By somehow eliminating that source of power the whole government will collapse. That is why westerners were able to help topple him easily. Was he much better than the islamic republic? Absolutely a million fold, but he still was a dictator and a fool (with good intentions). His lack of IQ cost us our country ,our youth and our happiness.
