The Seiko SPB313 Is SO CLOSE To Being The Best: One Week Review: The Slimmest High-End Prospex Diver

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Gnomon Watches Seiko Sale (let them know I sent you!) - www.gnomonwatches.com/collect...
Earlier this summer in 2022, Seiko released two watches that excited the Seiko fan base because they were watches seemingly tailor made for us. First were the Seiko 5 SSK GMTs and then the slimmest high end Prospex divers yet, the new slim Turtles: SPB313, SPB315, and SPB317. For years we’ve been asking for smaller and slimmer dive watches and Seiko got the ball rolling with the beloved SPB143 from a few years back but we wanted more. Here Seiko recreated the 70’s reference 6105-8000 which was the smaller and more streamlined “Captain Willard.” We finally have a high end Seiko diver that comes in at 12.2mm and it's a stunner
So in this video I’m going to go over why I decided to get the new SPB313 (SBDC171) despite the black bezel / white dial color combo being a combo I’ve historically disliked. And then we’ll get into all the different aspects of the watch that make this such a special watch. Seiko seemingly got everything right when it comes to the design and fit/finish however there is one thing that is surprisingly bad. But will it be enough to sour the other great experience?
AWESOME STUFF- I own and love every product listed so I want to spread the love!

Huge congrats on 10K! No watch channel is more deserving. 👏👏🥂 I owned an original slim turtle as well as the other major 60’s divers and of all the re-issues, this one is far and away the best and most faithful to the original model.

Thank you so much man! Your support from the start has been much appreciated! That’s awesome that you had the original slim turtle, I think that’s the one I’d go for if I were getting a vintage drink diver. Pure seiko but still a bit different. Glad to hear that I’ve got the next best thing in terms of faithfulness!

Yeah that clasp made me sad for sure lol especially since the likes of the SPB143 had the same good quality clasp but with 4 microadjust holes. AND they used space to put in a divers extension. But in the end I dont look at the clasp often so its still been awesome to wear!

The date at 04:30 is perfectly subtle. If you need the date, you'll see it instantly, the rest of the time it doesn't disturb the dial, like most dates do. Bell&Ross uses a similar layout in the BR03-93.

Ever since I saw the release of this piece with those 12mm in thickness I knew it was the best re-release from Seiko (Besides the SLA017 due to the movement of course). My problem with this piece and the spb143 and all those other re-releases done By Seiko lately are the bracelets, they just cant make them right, there is clash of desing between the case and the bracelets and part of the struggle is due that when these pieces were released in the late 60s they came with rubber... you would thing that 60 years later Seiko would have a better idea of a bracelet that complements the case design but nope, so to me, these guys are best in rubber and then get your own leather straps.

Great vid. Nice looking watch but I don't know about all the recent Seiko divers; there is always something not good enough. to justify the premium price in comparison to other micro brands. This Seiko or the new Chris. Ward C60 trident pro 300? the bracelet and clasp alone on the CW enough to make me go with the CW C60. Not interested in a 70hrs pwr reserve if it runs at 3hz. Prefer cleaner sweep with 48/52 hr of pwr reserve.

Firstly congratulations TWI on reaching 10K subscribers, this of course is only a fraction of what you deserve with the great educational, informative and arguably most important living with a watch information. Having been a subscriber from the early days it has been great to see the channel grow. I must admit I do like this Seiko, it sort of has a little Omega Seamaster Great White vibe to it with the white dial and black fully indexed bezel but with a more tool like finish that suites it well. Like you I'm a fan of fully brushed surfaces like the Pelagos (my LHD is still one of my favourites and possibly my most comfortable watch). The port hole date window at 4:30 shouldn't work but it does better than I would have thought so well done Seiko, the colour matched date wheel certainly helps out here a little like the panda PRX Chrono in that respect. Keep up the great work TWI, let's look forward to 100K subs!

Thank you so much Anthony for all your kind words I'm so glad that you find value in the videos I put out and I always look forward to hearing your thoughts on the watch or topic at hand since pretty much the beginning of the channel! Also It would be awesome if that Pelagos GMT we designed in the comments back in the day comes to life as a TWI collaboration lol! A man can dream right, just like 100k some day hopefully!😂😂 Yeah it really did have the great white SMP300 vibe to it! It does feel nice however I don't think it'll be enough to make me choose it over the good ol black dial variant once I get around to rebuying it lol! Seiko did a great job here especially when it comes to giving it is own identity. And as for the date window I think it's moved from "it's nice for a 430 date wheel" to "I actually really like it as a dial element in general!" Ah yeah I forgot that you got the PRX Chrono! How's that going for you? Lots of wrist time?

  • @anthonystevens8683

    @anthonystevens8683

    Жыл бұрын

@@thewatchidiot I love the PRX chronograph, the finishing of the bracelet and case push way above the price point. It all just works. Although my preference would have been the date at 6 or no date as with the Seiko it's colour matched on the panda dial and doesn't yell "Hi there, I'm the date" at the top of its voice you when you look at it. Compared to my Pelagii (Pelagos plural maybe?) it doesn't have the comfort by I love the 70's vibe. A bit bigger than the PM80 version but certainly still wears well. Oddly fighting for wrist time recently are my LHD and 39mm Pelagos watches. They really are so different to live with, the 39 is a bit more versatile but the LHD is just a no nonsense "let's get on with the day attitude" and that pips my 39 by a hair. Good times designing the the GMT. It takes a while to deign a new movement and costs quite a bit as well, when we consider testing and retooling it could easily be a couple of years. I hope Tudor are on it ready for a release in a year or two. I can't wait to see what they come up with and how it would compare to our design. Take great care TWI.

oh man that is such a tough choice!! For me i really love this 313 bc i love the case design, bracelet, and the way this dial bezel combo looks. All together its a watch that can stand out in my collection. The 143 is an incredible watch and i recently had one with me for a few days and it everything about it was pretty much spot on although I wasnt a huge fan of the bracelet. The only reason i dont have on in my collection is because between my 313 and SNE569 the 143 just wouldnt get enough wrist time to justify buying it. So if you can actually get both i think they can easily coexist bc of how different they are! Which way are you leaning?

@@thewatchidiot thanks for the detailed response :). Was leaving towards the black dial 317 then swayed to the 143 then back and forwards. I like bits off both. I prefer the black dial on the 317 better than the 143 grey. But prefer hardened bezel on the 143 and so on. I prefer the slimmer case on the 317. Love the Seiko signature case on the 317 but think the 143 can be dressed up more. I have thought about getting both but then with the cost combined could put towards a better watch 😬thanks again. Hard choices I am not a serial flipper either so try to get correct first time.

@The O hi I went spb143 in the end I have it here unused not sure if to keep it 1 minute I think keep then think return the next. I have read loads on both from what read the movement is identical so thats a draw. The 6R35 seems to be fairly robust but accuaracy not amazing you can get lucky and sometimes not. A lot of reviews say better when fully wound as accuracy goes lot worse when running low. A lot of people also say better accuracy when worn than when just sat in box. As for the watches, in my opinion the 143 is a better looking watch and feels more premium and solid. It will also look far better to the average person on the street if that bothers you. It is also much much more versatile as could be worn with a suit or wedding etc. The 317 is more toolish functional watch that screams retro Seiko I do like non brushed dial that this has as well but some prefer the sunburst. A lot say it looks cheaper than the 143 and the bezel action and look of bezel not as nice. The big plus point is the wearability of this watch most people say sits more on the wrist than on top like the 143 does. Saying that I will not be wearing the 143 on the bracelet and on strap feels perfectly fine. If comfort was main goal we would be wearing a digital slim light casio F91ws. I also feel the 317 has lost some of the magic and design of the normal willards/turtles even though it is lighter, slimmer and more wearable. I wish the 317 was like the willard just shrunken. If I return the 143 I will likely not pick up the 317 slim turtle. I paid £770 gbp new from AD and I do not feel its worth the £1100 price rrp but 770 feels acceptable. Saying that I don't think most watches are worth the rrp like a bb58 is not worth 3k and a sub 7k seamaster nearly 5k madness. We are paying a luxury tax these days. What are you leaning towards and what are your thoughts ?

Always unsigned crown I don't know why. It's not even difficult to do and Seiko doesn't even explain why no logo on the crown. Actually many people care about the logo on the crown.

Ridiculous asking price given the features of this watch. 6R35 is an awful inaccurate movement. I’d rather save a few hundred bucks and just get a 4R35. Only 2 micro adjust holes on the clasp? The other prospex divers have 4 (SPB143, SPB185 etc). And an aluminum bezel insert? Seiko needs to start using ceramic inserts like the new King Sumo. Looks great but I’m probably going to pass on this one…

Seiko doesn’t have respect for its customers. They are notorious for lackluster bands, not to mention they have dozens of watches close to the $500 range with Hardlex crystals

Gonna have to respectfully disagree. This watch is another example of Seiko moving away from a key place in the market - the affordable, good value diver. There is no reason for this to cost double the price of a King Turtle, either in specs, quality or appearance and that hole punch date window is (in my opinion) a real design flaw and looks like an after thought.

Yeah it's not worth the full asking price I got mine for $865, but I do agree that Seikos sweet spot for me is on the more affordable end of things which is why it's taken me so long to justify making this step up. The king turtle is great I've been eyeing one ever since I started missing my SRP773! But as an entire package especially with this new bracelet, this SPB313 has a certain level of elegance and refinement that just isn't there with the king turtle bracelet and case as good and comfy as they are. If the King turtle somehow shrunk down to this 41mm size then my thoughts would be very different lol!

@@thewatchidiot I went for the SRPE05 (grenade) so its on the rubber, I must admit I don't think any of my seikos are on their original bracelets as I agree they feel cheap. As for its size, I love it, I have largeish wrists and its a silly chunky monkey that makes me smile. It just feels to me that if your budget is over 500-600, there are brands that are providing better quality for value than this generation of Seiko's.
