Fun Fact: Both the whisper and the spirit of ecstasy were actually modelled after Eleanor Velasco Thornton. This is why people thought the whisper was linked to their affair. On Mazda; Japanese people actually pronounce ‘Mazda’ as ‘Matsuda’. It’s basically a linguistic thing; it doesn’t follow the standard syllable construction most Japanese words have. Look at some probably familiar words as an example; ka-ta-na, su-do-ku, sa-shi-mi. You get my drift. Mazda is a bit of an ugly duckling phonetically; the first part, ‘maz’, is non existent, and a Japanese person will gravitate towards pronouncing that as ‘ma-zu’ or ‘ma-tsu’. Regardless of the explanation, or the meaning, or message the company would like to hang on their brand; Japanese people still pronounce the name as ‘Mazuda’ or ‘Matsuda’.

True: my grand uncle, that has been an Italian priest working as a director of a Christian school in Osaka for 45 years (and therefore spoke perfect Japanese), when he came back here in Italy once, told me that as a car he had a "mazuda" and it took me quite few minutes to understand he was referring to our "mazda" :)

fun fact about ferrari's prancing stallion: a theory links it to the emblem of stuettgart. baracca adopted it from his fifth aerial kill (5 kills = ace), which was a german plane from that place. if confirmed, that would mean that porsche and ferrari share the very same prancing stallion in their own emblems

There is the legend, that he shot down a german plane from that region of Stuttgart which was piloted by a noble sporting that coat of arms. He took the wounded pilot prisoner. This was a very different kind of war in the air in that time and he was called the chevalier of the air for a reason. The code of arms of his own family was a black horse too, which he took as a lucky sign and painted it onto his plane.

That's why the Messerschmitt 109 is called "BF109" and the company logo IS a propeller.

Australian HOLDEN (RIP) symbol shows a sitting lion with one paw resting on a round rock. Origins of this symbol is open to conjecture. One account is from a legend that man got the idea for the wheel watching young lions roll stones. (like how kittens play with a ball of string). Another interpretation is that it describes "King of the Road." Either way, the HOLDEN symbol is definitely one of the coolest.

Holden started off in the 1856 making saddles. They then progressed to coach building producing local car bodies for companies such Dodge and Lancia. Coach building was often done locally as valuable cargo space on ships to Australia was often restricted to chassis only. Holden eventually become the sole Australian body manufacturer for GM. In 1931 it became a wholly owned GM subsidiary known as General Motors Holden (GMH)

The Ferrari prancing horse derives from the regiment from which Francesco Baracca belonged (Regiment "Piemonte Cavalleria" 2nd founded in 1692) which originally had a white prancing horse on a red background on the coat of arms. In 1923 Enzo Ferrari met Baracca's parents who suggested him to adopt the logo on its cars as a sign of luck. The Porsche logo was designed in 1953 at the suggestion of entrepreneur Max Hoffmann to increase sales of the eponymous brand. However, many do not know that the Porsche horse is a mare unlike that of the Ferrari which is a stallion.

Excellent video, and I learned a few things. But you missed one of the more subtle points of the Mercedes logo. These days, the three-pointed star is always depicted inside a circle, which represents the laurel-wreath logo of the Benz company. It's more clearly seen on the little enamel badge which the cars still carry on their bonnets and wheels, but the normal logo is a more stylised version.

Interestingly enough on the Subaru one, on most cars there is actually a hidden 7th star printed into the rear differential cover. not sure if this was done on purpose or just an odd coincidence.

A fact to add to Audi: The sub factions of both Audi and Horch were named after August Horch, their founder. Horch is old german way of saying "listen", and Audi is latin (as in Audio), for the same thing.

Correct. Prof. Horch was forced to drop his own Name, as he left the Horch Company and founded his own firm. A boy, who was connected with the Horch family and just graduated, proposed to use the latin verb "audi!" for the literally german expression "horch!"

Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them)… Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures. Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement. It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them. (19-22 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Audi, of course, replaced Horch, when Herr Horch was deposed from his own company. Both words mean "I hear" (in Latin and German). Another huge benefit of a herringbone gear wheel is the absence of end-thrust on the axle. The Spirit of Ecstacy is actually aerodynamic; it helps to keep bugs from hitting the wind-screen.

Not exactly. “Horch” in German is more of a command like “Listen Up!” “Ich horche” means “I am listening” closer in meaning to “listening in” as in spying. Also used in the word “gehorchen” meaning obeying, following orders.

and provides crucial downforce for better front end grip. sadly it also creates huge outwash which makes it almost impossible to follow closely without overheating and is very difficult to pass until the end of a long straight into a chicane. Someone should address this issue in the future to reduce this unfair advantage.

I think the Lotus brand logo is interesting also: It carries the four letters "ACBC" which refer to the name of the founder Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman. And that is the easy part. Because, to my knowledge at least, the reason why Colin and his wife Hazel actually named the company Lotus remained their secret. Maybe their son Clive would be able to shed a light, however up to this day there is a lot of speculation around why Lotus name is Lotus. And no: It is not an acronym for "Lots of Trouble Usually Serious" :-) The reason for the car model being called is probably well known: The company owner of the early nineties, when he launched the Project M1-11 decided it would be a bad idea to call the car One-Eleven, because this name would be pronounced diferently in different contries. So he decided to call the name after his first grandchild Elisa - hence Lotus Elise. Elisa was born in the year when the M1-11 porject launched and she also played a key role in the publich presentattion of the Elise at the Frankfurt Motor Show IAA on September 12, 1995 (she was 2 1/2 years old then)

For LOTUS it is more tricky: 1/ ACBC at the first it was a "trick" from Chapman, to not make troubles with his 2 others financial partners: the Allen Brothers, so CCAB: Colin Chapman and Allen Brothers. then he admitted years after that it can be read by Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman B/ About name, all lotus names come with "E" as first letter, so have to figure out a name with "E" also the Bugatti owner Artoli named the 111: ELISE, not only for his grand daughter but also because he didn't want at all that the model will be called 111 (not for the language) but for the fact that Bugatti (French company and not Italian by the way) had the EB-110 which will be terrible to have a continuity in the reference ...

The Rover Bicycles were so popular in Poland that the word became a synonym for bicycle itself. At least this is what I read about it.

Slight correction: The 90's "mazda" emblem with the diamond was actually for it's planned, but cancelled by recession, luxury brand to compete with the likes of lexus and infiniti. You will only see it on a few cars, specifically the milennia, which was not supposed to be a mazda, but the new brand. I think the renualt thing was a later rationalization, I have seen no reliable sources for that theory.

@@axelknutt5065 Eunos was for JDM, "fun to drive and upscale". Amanti was supposed to be the luxury brand, a Lexus / Acura / Infinity competitor. The developed cars were later sold under Mazda and Eunos, and were named Mazda Xedos 6 and 9 in EU and the Millenia (Xedos 9) in the US.

Well my mother's '96 (or '97?) Mazda 323 had it and, in 3d, it did look like Renault's logo. Renault did look after its trademarks: They had a "Virage" model in Australia (a 12 with a 1.4L motor) and trademarked "Mirage" because it sounded similar. Mitsubishi had to rename their Mirage on the Australian market to "Colt".

I only knew a very small amount of what you told us in this video. Thanks for the always interesting and entertaining content.

That's where people get things wrong... Although those logos are goodlooking, they are a mess when looked from a distance or when it's dark. Simple logos like vw, opel audi and the like are also stylish (because they're simple) and they look great even if you are partially blind, colourblind or hundreds of meters from your beloved vehicle.

Welp, the romeo guys are still salty over Salahuddeen and his forefathers.

DKW motorcycles ,on the other hand , were championship winning machines ,especially the supercharged two strokes. After the war the RT 125 road bike was manufactured by Harley-Davidson in the US and BSA in the UK. The Harley-Davidson version was known loosely as the Hummer (Hummer is really just a few specific years, but generally people call the Harley lightweights Hummers), while BSA used them for the Bantam. IFA and later MZ models continued in production until the 1990s, when economics brought production of the two stroke to an end. Other manufacturers copied the DKW design, officially or otherwise. This can be seen in the similarity of many small two-stroke motorcycles from the 1950s, including from Yamaha, Voskhod, Maserati, and Polish WSK.

@@philhawley1219 dkw actually started in 1904 and produced equipment and spare parts for steam machines. 1916 They started development on a steam vehicle for the military which was cancelled in 1921. Still the Name dkw was used hereon after.

4:31 In Czechia we call BMWs "Bavoráci" which could be literally translated as Bavarians, so I guess that Czech colloquial term actually makes some sense xd

One interesting story you missed (if it is true) is that Hr Horsch sold his company and was not allowed to use the same name with any subsequent company after that. Horsch in his dialect meant 'to hear' so for his next company he chose AUDI from the Latin Audible (as we know that word today). So really we should pronounce AUDI or~di not ow~di.

Yes and No. Firstly, it is Horch, not HorSch. Horch ist the Imperative Singular of "horchen" (not "hören") ~"to listen/ to hear", which is not dialect although somewhat old-fashioned AND used in Southern-German dialects as synonymous for "hören". Audi, too, is the Imperative Singular of the verb to hear/to listen in Latin (audire), andI did find that spin of the story missing, too. PS: Yes, GoogleTranslator is slightly off on the Latin here.

Since when is the U in latin pronunced as R?. Native english speakers still come closest when saying "ow-dee" in my opinion. And the story circulating in german speaking areas is that Mr. Horch had not let go of is company voluntarily. And so when choosing a name for his new company his son who was still in school but currently learning for a latin exam was asked and his answer was the latin translation of the word Horch. So in essence we have Audi because Mr. Horchs son was able to get education.

The real ones know why he didn't mention Volkswagen 😏

@@nobodynoone2500 actually not. The beetle was the attempt to motorize Germanys population. And kraft durch freude was a slogan used throughout nazi Germany and so it was also coupled to the marketing campaign for the car which became known as the Kdf-wagen or kdf- vehicle. But kdf never was used for the volkswagen company itself.
