In many cases, pipe tobacco ends up getting very dry when we don't store pipe tobacco properly. What happens when we don't store pipe tobacco properly is when the pipe tobacco gets dry it tends to lose its flavor, aroma and burns much faster which isn't good. If fresh tobacco or herbs are dried out during the curing process or afterward, the result is a very harsh smoke for the stomach and lungs, and the taste is as harsh as the smoke. Even for the most hardcore smokers.
The key message for anyone who doesn’t want to deal with dried-out tobacco is pretty simple. You should never let it dry out in the first place. No one wants to waste good tobacco products because they become dried out, and there is a tip out there telling smokers what they have to do to re-hydrate tobacco. The first thing you should really do is try to store tobacco properly so they remain moist prior to storing them.
If you’ve already stored tobacco and you open it to find out it’s dry, there is still hope to bring it back to life. Some smokers put their tobacco in a Ziploc/sealed bag that you'll see in the entire video.
You can rehydrate your dry tobacco following this easy and very effective and secret way to get back the original taste of your tobacco that doesn't lose flavor and burn less than dry tobacco. So, you're going to learn step by step effective ways to rehydrate tobacco with one simple trick to rehydrate your tobacco over the video. This will bring back some flavor and aroma to the pipe tobacco and allow it to burn more at a normal pace.

Great vid greetings from the UK where us smokers are a dying breed
I have just put a piece of bread in side the bag, depending on how dry one piece on each side and mix up a couple times until moist
I do this with ryo cigarettes and it works fine.
Thanks, Brian, super helpful info. I forgot and left some good quality pipe tobacco in my car, and it is completely dried out and, as you said, very unpleasant and difficult to smoke. I'm gonna try out your method right away!

How do I remove the sour taste from tobacco?
How big is that bag of tobacco wowzers
I'm new to pipe smoking and am trying different tobaccos. I bought a pouch of Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic and it's very very dry. It stinks like old socks and smokes terrible. I don't get why it's called Aromatic because it stinks. Will it come back to life with a little moisture or does this brand just stink? Thanks for the tip on rehydrating.

Right. I know this is an old post, but I agree with you. I'm not a fan of Sir Walter Raleigh either. As far as pouches of tobacco, I have found Captain Black varieties to be much better. Especially Captain Black Original. And of course, the bulk or tinned pipe tobacco's at a tobacconist are the best route for really good smoking experience.
Can you put a slice of orange or apple in it instead of paper towel and would that effect the flavor of the tobacco?

I have used a slice of apple overnight and it works great and imparts no flavor.

High temperatures and humidity where I live in on an island in the Eastern Mediterranean with pipe tobacco quickly drying out so I only store limited amounts of tobacco at home. For everyday use I place orange or lemon peel in the the tobacco tin with the outer or dry side of the peel resting on the tobacco, it works well keeping the tobacco hydrated but not wet. I’ve used the same method for hydrating old stock dried out tobacco which takes very much longer with successful results. I’ve not noticed any flavouring issues caused by the peel although the old stock dried out tobacco’s have already lost any natural or topping flavours anyway.

Never buy big bags of tobacco
Sorry, I 100% disagree with this. All pipe tobacco will smoke optimally when dry. It will offer all the taste, complexity and smoking quality it has to offer when sufficiently dry. Dry means dry. Not sticking together and not crumbling to dust.

Seems like my cigs burn really fast when tobacco is dry. I also find that often times the cherry gets really long and cig burns down on one side. Not sure why this is. Gonna try this paper towel trick.

Dry is bad; it crumbles, burns too quickly, has little to no flavor, and bites like a mad mule. Cured is what you want; feels springy but not wet or damp, tastes like it's supposed to, and doesn't have a bite. Dry means dry, and that's not how your tobacco is meant to be smoked.
