The SECRET to Making Amazing Scroll Saw Art | Scroll Saw Woodworking

I love this picture drawn by Paul Davidson. Any guesses as to who it is? Well, you’ll have to watch the video to find out! I came across this picture and knew I had to turn it into a scroll saw art piece. Fortunately, there are not a lot of pieces. There’s the hat, face, arm, and fist. Three of those use the same species of wood. I used a No. 5 reverse tooth blade for the entire project.
This project started by making a walnut picture frame. I wanted the fist to look like it was punching through the frame so I had to do something I’ve never done before, cut the frame with a scroll saw. I had to make the rabbet for the frame extra deep to allow me to cut the frame. It felt wrong, but turned out right.
The artwork starts with a sheet of 1/2" thick MDF. I made my own veneer and glued wenge on one side and cherry on the other. If I had a cheaper type of hardwood I would have that instead. The wenge is all that really matters. That’s for the dark areas of the picture.
I made a maple panel that is about 1/8” thick and cut out the profile of my picture. I glued it to my wenge backer board. Then it was time to add in all of the pieces to make the artwork. I used walnut for the hat and sycamore for his skin. I varied the thickness of the boards to account for the perspective. This fist is closest to the you so that is thicker. His face is sunken into the background so that is barely thicker than the maple background. All of the other pieces fall in between. Once it was all cut and sanded, I applied multiple coats of Arm-R-Seal satin.

That's great, Billy You did make a work of art (or of Billy?). That was a great touch having him punch through the frame. You know I had to follow you to this channel. Bill

So kind of you to jump over here too. I'm really excited about being able to make this channel its own thing. And that drawing was too cool not to cut out!
Awesome final result! As you said, it looks super cool whether or not you know who it is & I love the fist punching through the frame - the reference to panel-breaking makes it clearly comic-book-esque - plus panel breaking in itself is really neat. :D
Billy sir you truly are an artist. So glad you've done this not that a didn't like it being linked in the other Chanel but there was no question of subs for both. Idea for you spider pig and homer from the Simpsons movie or something from there or Matt groenings list of cartoons?? Or ironman?

Is it hard to remove the glue from something like the hat? I have been using blue tape. Curious how you deal with the glue.

I hand sand the parts and when necessary scrape them with a card scraper or chisel.
This is really fantastic. Well done! Are you using a spiral cutting blade on your scrollsaw? I’m thinking of starting a scrollsaw picture of Optimus Prime 👍🏻

I have used spiral blades but not often. Perhaps the right picture will require me to use them more. Optimus Prime would be amazing!

@@NewtonMakesArt I've heard they can be quite useful for intricate cuts where you can move in all directions. lots of sanding apparently though.
Do you ever use carving tools to make lines or edge treatment on your scroll saw art? Maybe instead of cutting the lines with scroll saw? I’m Just a very beginner scroll saver.

I did a little bit on my Spiderman picture. I mentioned it in the video but didn't show it in camera. I haven't done a ton of it but I can see it providing some benefits.
Matches Malone?

No, but he's on the list to make!
Commenting early in the video to feed the algorythm god: not sure who the character is, but I would say maybe Butcher from The Boys, just based on him being an angry punchy man :P

Butcher isn't too bad of a guess. Perhaps a future project!
great talent !!!...but the art promote hate and violence...is my honest opinion.
