Scroll Saw Project Tips for Better Artwork

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I used a scroll saw to make a fun Fall décor project. This is the process I use to make scroll saw art regardless of the picture. I get perfectly fitting pieces and artwork that JUMPS out at you by doing these couple of things. It starts with the preparing the picture and setting myself up for success. The process I show in this video can be used for any type of scroll saw project, especially ones with a lot of complex shapes. If you dig scroll saw art then check out the rest of my channel which is devoted to scroll sawing techniques and projects.
I used multiple species of wood to get the colors I want. The squirrel’s brown fur is chechen (also called black poisonwood). His light-colored fur is sycamore. I used holly for his teeth and eyes, and katalox for his nose. The acorn is made from white oak, katalox, and walnut. For the panel that holds the artwork, I used ½” thick MDF, with wenge veneer on top. Then added a maple background. I finished the project with spray lacquer.

I have a Skil 3335 that was given to me awhile back but I've never used it. I'm hunting online for as much info as possible before I buy blades and start cutting, but the lack of information on this specific model is bonkers! I'm saving up all your videos for the day I figure out which "flat end" blades I should start with for learning though! Thanks!

You can never go wrong starting with a reverse tooth blade. 👍

Hey Billy do you get your scroll saw patterns from somewhere or do you just print off photos that you like and go with it?

  • @NewtonMakesArt

Yes? Neither? I either find pictures I like or I draw them myself. If they're pictures someone else made, it's rare if I don't modify it in some way. What looks good on paper doesn't always work for scroll sawing. I've never used a template someone else made. So I guess the answer is yes, but no?

Could you not use contact paper on top of the paper instead of packing tape? Is it just not clear enough? (Just thinking it might go on faster than packing tape?)

You probably could. Mine isn't as clear and wouldn't work. It's also more of a pain to apply on top of paper.

Why wouldn’t you cut the black off on a cheaper wood then cut the part your keeping as the picture on the veneer? This way you could stop using and wasting the veneer?
