Thank you for taking the time to walk us thru all the colors and how burnishing or blending changes them, often for the better. God bless you, Jenny!

I was trying to crack Derwent Lightfast and watched so many videos, yours is the only one that actually gave me a breakthrough. Thank you so much.

Jenny, thank you for enlightening us on how Derwent Lightfast pencils are to used. I am probably like some people who have put Lightfast pencils on the shelf because of their very dark colours. The information you have shown me has been a game-changer. I now know how I can best use these pencils in my artwork.

I really enjoy the Lightfast pencils as well as the other professional brands as a color pencil artist, watercolorist and pastelist and respect that what might work for one may not work for another. The pencils recommended as blenders and burnishers I do not use them for a couple of reasons. The CD blenders, which I have just eat up my limited about of paper ability to hold pigments of which I use to blend in other colors in my work which I create and sell. I use a variety of substrates but my favorites are Clairfontaine Pastelmat and I have even used hp 140lb wc paper with Art Spectrum pastel and multi media primer to create a grit to blend. I have also just used Arches wc paper, and drafting paper or Grafix .005 double sided matte. The drafting paper only allows a max of 3 layers and typically Polychromos and Luminance and Pablos work a bit better because of the heavier pigment load of the Lightfast pencils is too much on a fine surface. A blender just wouldn’t work on that surface but lifting and oms works great. On regular sanded paper the Lightfast pencils work great on their own and the blenders again just take up my creative space to blend endlessly and the same with the professional Pastelmat. I have experimented with these for 8 years and all the blenders in my work. What I have found is that the. Caran ‘de ache company makes a great self contained waterbrush that has a fibrous tip. I put odorless mineral spirits in it and cap it. They never have leaked or caused me to become woozy. I prefer to remove the waxy base and turn the pencils into what they really are-Oil Paint in a pencil. The oms removes the wax binder allowing for blending smoothly and I seal my paintings with Colored Pencil final fixative. Colored pencil company makes a powder to move the pigments and so forth but the aforementioned is my go to secret which other artists also use. Learning to blend just a a handful of colors allows one to even save money and pick and choose with the brands. I use this one as well as the others mentioned and remove pencils that are not lightfast for my paintings. One wants to maximize their potential for blending and not fill in the tooth leaving no options. Yes those companies made the blank pencils but all the colored pencil artists that I know really do not use them. Again it is a choice and one makes their own path. Anyone is welcome to check our work, my work is advertised on FB as well as many others’. Happy painting and a great art journey to all. 😊

The only problem I have when I am given so many colors. It is so hard to pick which ones I want to use to draw with so what I did is I found a little spinner tool where I could put in all the names of the colors like the prisma color brand the 150 set I put in every single name for it so I spin it and it lands on it color so I can use that color in my drawings and it helps me choose lol.

I just broke my budget today and bought the 100 set. I adore Derwent coloring pencils. I do not swatch, for me it is wasted energy as I have severe arthritis in both hands. Thanks for the video.

This is great. I’ve been so disappointed in some of these colors and was sad I chose this as my full set. Minus the new ones that I need to get can you provide the list? I couldn’t tell what they were But why can’t they just make a pretty purple color. Why do we need to mix with a light color to make it pop.

Green earth in other mediums is a fairly weak pigment. Weak isn't really the wOrd, but it is not bright and in my opinion, I don't use it in watercolor because it seems very blah

The difference is just when that individual pencil was produced. Derwent have change the wording a couple of time. I bought my Inktense open stock and half say Britain half say England

"Secret"? Derwent began to produce Lighfast pencils in 2018. That makes them a latecomer as Faber Castel began producing Polychromos 110 years earlier. Caran d Ache began production of the Luminence range in 1915. That does not mean Derwent are bad but for them to be behind their competitors isn't a good thing. The FC Polychromos and Caran d Ache Luminence have also been able to stand the test of real time in what they say about lightfastness. What is bad about Derwent is the price of open stock. That might be why the vast majority of sellers of Derwent opt only to sell various sets. But if Derwent are serious about quality, how can they be so far behind the Faber Castell? It means that for 110 years they didn't consider lightfastness an important issue. With Faber Castell now producing a Matt range of graphite pencils that go all the way to a 14B, Derwent are still behind. It seems Derwent are happy to remain behind the leaders and only follow when they recognise the threat.
