This is one of my most favorite songs of all time. I live half way across the globe, but somehow this songs carries me not only though space, but time as well. Whenever and wherever i listen to it, i instantly get transferred to 1960s American South.

Think the lines is, "But we all have to make a trembling stand before the SON". Referring the the Son of God and judgement day.

Saw someone recommend this song on tumblr a few months ago. Wish I could remember who it was because this song is great

Strong song story line arranged carefully -harmony tight with memorable phrasing excellent musicianship Modern Appalachian style Very rare degree of quality not seen since the McGarrigles

These gals can really write ... captivating melodies too

They are such great story tellers, something that is sorely lacking in the rest of music these days.

I love listening stories through songs and this one is so well-written.

I saw them in concert at the Cumberland Caverns, probably the best concert ever. I was able to talk to them after the concert, they are so very humble and amazing. Best group since the Civil Wars came along.

I am completely convinced that this is the father’s side of the Iuka story. In Iuka, the story was about two lovers trying to marry (in Iuka, so that is a loophole maybe because in this song, they’re trying to LEAVE Mississippi). Everything else fits though. The two lovers, the abusive, controlling, murderous father, noose in the maple tree...just saying. Go listen to their song Iuka.

Possibly my favorite on the new album, but the whole thing is stunning. The production by Brandi Carlile is outstanding.

I saw these amazing women in St. Louis and they were the first opening act to Brandie Carlile and I was blown away! I could of listened to them all night.

I loved this song from the moment I heard it. It was only later when I had fully devoured their discography that I learned it was the second song of a story. The two songs put together make one of the best stories I've heard told in a song in quite awhile.

something aligned just right for you to hear this song in that kind of zone just thinking about, I get an even stronger felling of how it should be heard … todays radio is often times to clean sounding for my liking, particular stuff from the 50s to the mid 80s sounds better with a bit of static
