Interesting how you mentioned Death Grips while they're just now having more activity then they've had in a long time. A show announcement isn't much, but for Death Grips, it's everything

Andy Morin has been posting some stuff on his instagram that looks like studio/writing sessions and people are theorizing that maybe we'll be getting new DG music soon, especially after the festival announcement. We'll have to wait and see, but I'm hoping that the boys are back. Also Zach Hill got back together with Spencer Seim for a Hella reunion. Things in the DG extended universe are getting very exciting.

@@uncrownedoak7777 Andy has done lots of solo sets with his A2B2 events, but he's never used the Death Grips name for his solo stuff. This is the first official time that DG has been officially playing a show in a long time so it would surprise me if it was just Andy, especially at a big festival like SNW.
Death Grips really has one of the most carefully orchestrated public images in the music industry, despite the fact that they want you to see them as a force of chaos. It's kinda genius.

The downside of the album rollout is when you don't actually have the album ready, so it's just an endless stream of singles until the hype evaporates and no one even remembers you were making an album.

I could give you a whole verbal essay on the Because The Internet album rollout but it would take me hours. It’s a very detailed and thought provoking rollout. Things down to the books on he had in The Boys room tied into the larger story and themes. My favorite album of all time because of it
Back in 2016, a rapper from Memphis did one of the most interesting rollouts I'd ever seen. In his project, The 30 Day Mixtape, Tyke T released a song a day for the entire month of (I want to say) September and, the top 10 highest voted songs would be featured on the project. Couldn't imagine with all the beat selections, writing, features, mixing, mastering, etc how long it took to execute such an undertaking.
Death Grips in the thumbnail might as well be clickbait to me.
Its all about preparation for momentum, that’s all. We’ve learned after the past 2 decades that it doesn’t matter how big you are, people have short attention spans. Have to have as big an impact as you can, solidify a fan base, than rinse and repeat every 2 or 3 years, preparing the whole time in between. Also, all the weird stuff is usually to solidify that solid 5-10 thousand fans that are absolute freaks for your music, making sure you have retention between your next album. That’s part of it I think.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Run The Jewels 2 rollout that did the same thing as John Freese. However one of the rewards was "We will re record RTJ2 but with cat sounds" and from that came Meow The Jewels.
2006-2008 is UNDEFEATED in the art of the rollout! They were flawless and you just knew you HAD to have that album!! The kids don’t do it like that anymore!!

My favorite rollout is most definitely the ARG that Nine Inch Nails did to announce their dystopian album Year Zero. Not only did it include a lot of cool lore but it also ended in the winners of the arg getting sent to a secret concert that got "invaded" by a special police force and everyone had to scatter.

love the video. hit me with a lot of inspiration for the 2023 new music roll out 🧓
Great video! Love this take. Couldn’t agree more
One of my favorites was the strokes “the new abnormal” rollout, as it was during covid, they did zoom call podcasts episodes to generate hype. Along top of that, instead of dropping a more radio friendly song, they dropped “at the door” as the lead single, which plays with a door motif they play with and had left off on the album previous, with the last lyric of LP5 being “close the door, not all the way”
I think my favorite was AFI's release of their Clandestine short film, relating back to Sing The Sorrow. They had a ARG/Scavenger hunt, which lead to the film, which lead to more hunting, calling telephone numbers, emails, yadda yadda, which all lead to a secret show that was only limited to 200 people? To be able to see AFI at their peak in a small venue would have meant the WORLD to those 200 people.
Renaissance rollout is very strange but at the same time exciting! Like the album came 5 months ago! No music videos just lyrics videos so people learn the lyrics, there is a film for the album but it will come later so people are hype and then the world tour, the decition behind all of this was that people inmmerse just in the music, and that they can create the visuals using tiktok and KZread and Twitter I think is genious!

This reminds me a lot of loona. You probably have heard of them but what you might not have known is that, the traditional way to debut a kpop group is to introduce the group's name, members, concept and such at once months prior to their debut. In loona's case, the group name can be literally translated to "this month's girl" from korean. So what they did is that for every month, the members would get introduced with their own music video, their own solo album, and their own concept. Their music videos also have motifs in them to tie all the different genres and stories each one tells. Similar to Twenty One Pilots (only based on your description since I am not familiar with their lore), they also have an interesting world-building narrative where each of the girls are the characters of the story. If you were interested in this very unconventional way to promote an artist's music, you can check them out yourself. But don't get your hopes up, their executive director basically abandoned this concept ever since they blew up in twitter.

My Album Rollout method is to release a Mini-Album once a year and maybe throw in an EP of Alternate song Versions in between. I went from having 200 monthly listeners to 1000+ in a matter of months
also about the Taylor Swift rollout: I think she wanted if to be an album but then she decided to make it all for the Swifties hype (like Easter eggs, and more), and I'm happy for the Swifties

King GIzzard and the Lizard Wizard really like to roll out more than one album at the same time. Either you'll have situations like 2017's batch of five albums or Gizztober this year, where they will have one big rollout for multiple albums, or albums with overlapping rollouts, like how right before the release of Fishing for Fishies, they surprise dropped a single off the following album, Infest the Rats Nest And then there's Butterfly 3000, where they kinda did a reverse rollout. They announced the album a month before it released, didn't release any accompanying singles, and then after it came out, released music videos for every single song on the album.
Loved the video. The most interesting rollout in recent memory for me is Drake and 21’s Her Loss. I’ve never seen artists fake talk shows, magazine covers, and performances for the sake of a rollout
Adele's rollout for 25 back in 2015 was the last true global blockbuster event in music before the streaming age. I don't think we'll ever see another album sell over 20 million copies in pure album sales alone like it did
a band that i like called the altogether has been releasing songs two at a time from their new album it is coming out in a few days!
I'm working on an album rollout as we speak, so thank you for the impeccably well-timed video!
iconic video 🙏❤️
One of the most interesting album rollouts I’ve been a part of was Sundowning by Sleep Token. They released one single every two weeks, upon the sunset of the release date in the UK, until the entire album was out.

Jill Sobule used crowd funding for one of her albums years before anyone ever heard of Kickstarter or Go Fund Me. The top tier she offered allowed someone to contribute vocals on a track.

I vividly remember that day. I was a super fan, and hadn't even heard rumors. It's sudden appearance was shocking. The album is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion.
I thought that back in the day (80's and before) the first single and the album were released simultaneously. Or at least the first single and then the album release shortly there after but *no long waiting for the album* .
Highly Suspect is one of my favorites that put out a new album a couple months ago. The roll out was simple but I enjoyed it. They released audio on KZread but each video featured a different piece of art and they were all really good. And they had animation so it wasn't just static. Album and merch design was my favorite thing to do back when I worked as an artist and good album design is something I've always appreciated almost as much as the music itself. I kind of miss that about the pre internet era when we had to buy physical albums. I wore out a lot of discs but held on to the artwork, like posters and lyric booklets, for a long time. It felt like they were updating that for a new market. When I went to see them live they also had a huge painted backdrop. I appreciate when a band has a strong aesthetic to go with their work and HS definitely does. A lot of bands do have visual identity, but there are a handful that take it to another level and I love it.
I have 150 Spotify listeners and I’ll definitely do that josh freeze shit anyday, just point me in the right direction.

i hate that music has become more about how succesfully you manuever the social media landscape, as apposed to how good the music you make is. Thats one of the biggest downsides of labels having the power to push the songs to over a billion people, once it gets a billion plays, it doesnt matter how good the song is, they already got the money... now they just make another shitty song and push it the same way to get another billion streams. Before you had to make GOOD music to ensure your music would last and get you those listens, now it can be achieved simply through marketing..........

If we’re talking rollouts then there’s only three we should mention, Kanye’s mbdtf, the weeknds after hours and Travis Scot’s astroworld
In terms of many mainstream pop musicians, social media is their no 1 tactic. Their fans are sheep and know it.

hey i am not sure if you still make that misunderstood songs in music history series but here is a hot take: Dragostea din tei by O-zone AKA The Numa Numa The song is about being ghosted by a loved one. First part of the song says about the guy calling himself a "haiduc" which is some sort of equivalent of a Robin Hood definition. 'Alo. Salut. It's me...[...] And please, my love let it receive the happiness,' The chorus simply refers to 'you want to go but you don't bring me too--- your face and the love from the tei remind me of your eyes' second part just says "im calling you to tell you how I fell right now" so yeah take it as it is.
Hopsin did the same thing as “Chase” and everybody said it’s the dumbest thing ever. They’re right. U don’t release all or most of your album… before your album drops
theres no secret here, your just explaining how different people released their album. Whats the secret that they all did in common?

I have heard somewhere that "Taylor is a force to be studied" with, her impact, sales(funny how the US think theyre the only economy for them to be shock with the midnights sales), fanbase. And I agree, but I hope musicians aren't taking notes of her approach with hopes of achieving even just a quarter of her success and get discourage later on when it didn't happen the way they hope/expected. Note that *her Easter eggs started since her debut, she's barely 16 att *she's white, hardworking, talented, beautiful, a people person, rebellious, courteous( as you can see in her frame that her backs started to hunch now from lowering herself so others won't feel intimidated w/ her height) *she has meet and greet after tours, she talks about before when she was just a teen that she will never complained standing all day signing autographs, getting approach by fans, cause that's what she wished before she got famous *In her 3rd album(she have a song dedicated to fans titled LONG LIVE from her self written album) *taylor values consumers really well, her fans, genuinely *her craftsmanship isn't dependent to any culture like hip-hop, hip-hop is a great genre but only if it's in your native language *as music elitists say, she makes simple, basic, mediocre songs that are universally accessible because her fanbase are teens but actually it's because we grew up with her, from debut to her song fifteen, we are conditioned to value the physical album, disect each track, cause there is probably a gem there underneath all the formulaic singles. *Her teen fans before are adults with income, they can purchase now without relying to what their parents budget for it before. *Most of her hardcore aren't really music fans, I myself doesn't really listen constantly to any artist beside taylor, don't listen to pop, country, hip-hop, indie, even when taylor goes pop I've always felt she's indie, independent from any genre, her hardcore fans are mostly advocates of her character, would dissect every lyrics like how neitzsche fans interpret every words in thus spoke zarathustra
