The Secret of Being Johnny

Johnny Barnes wasn't a saint. But he wanted people to know he loved them. So he told them. Just as fast as his mouth would allow.
Now Johnny Barnes is a statue. Because you don't have to be a saint to be important.

So lovely to see you so relaxed after the recent emotional storm. I know this was filmed earlier, but you picked the right one to come next. Take care, don't get ill. I'm looking forward to more from your stockpile! This was a lovely film, it made me smile. Every community needs a Johnny - not necessarily to act in the same way, but to be important to them. And every community today needs to pull together. For that reason too, you picked a great story to tell right now. Thank you.

I am so glad I got to experience this along with everything else in Bermuda. I miss it and feel sorry for anyone who didn't get a chance to witness such a simple yet marvelous human being.

San Francisco used to have a “Johnny”. He was Emperor Joshua Norton, Ruler of the United States and protector of Mexico. He issued his own script that was good in local business. Now very collectible to have some of the Emperors money. They say 40,000 people showed up for his funeral, Mark Twain included.

I remember a guy back in my hometown of Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic before I moved couple of years ago, there was this scruffy guy who always talked to everybody. I mean he was always open to a conversation, no matter the topic. Interestingly enough, he got around town on a cart tugged by four huskies. Even though he looked like he hadn't washed for a year his dogs always looked like they could fit a magazine cover for dog lovers. I remember he wasn't Czech and could speak only a little but besides that he spoke like 10 other languages. You could see him riding his cart in the center and stopping whenever someone seemed interested enough to talk to him or pet his dogs or both. BTW imagine driving your car to work and overtaking a dog carrige with a smiling and sometimes waving guy in it... And before you get the idea that such things happen in places where people can't afford cars or whatever, google my town.

Probably not as immediately famous as Johnny, but in my hometown, there's this old guy who came to a junction everyday win traffic warden uniform (I presume he used to work as one?) and helped everyone there, like when anyone wants to cross the road or just want to get a bus or other kind of public transport. I think those who worked around that area knows him well to a point where he often received gifts and lunchboxes from passers-by who went around there every so often. I myself don't work around there, but I often passes through that junction (after a bout of shopping or whatever), and oftentimes when he's not around I wondered if he's alright. Perhaps he wanted to continue to help people even after he retired from his work? I don't know, but I'm happy this kind of person still exists.

This story reminds me of the Bush Man in San Francisco. He was a homeless man who set up shop on the sidewalk in Fisherman's Wharf. For Decades this man would hide behind bushes and scare people. I remember at a very young age he scared the shit outta my father and my dad ended up laughing his ass off. He gave Bushman five bucks. It seemed like many people from the entire Bay Area knew of Bushman. And idk why but this reminded me of him. He always brought cheer to people, and I always wondered if anybody ever got upset at him. He has since passed on now. RIP BUSHMAN

When I was a youngster of 8, (back in the 70s) there was what seems a similar character perched at the top of a steep, long, winding narrow two lane road, that preceded a long, winding, narrow section with a steep drop off to left with little or no shoulder on the right. It was a bit if an initiation for sportsmen and women who enjoyed the High Sierras then. My older family members would tell about this big childlike man who waved to every car passing by. I noticed that telling about him inspired them to create a mystique about the phenomenon that piqued my interest intensely. When the day arrived that I was to go fishing for the first time I was primed and was not to be disappointed. The energy with which this man jumped out of his seat and waved gave a magic to the moment that I and many still today know they will never forget. I think today at the barn next to Cressman's Station they may still have the big chain saw carved waving bear out front, I cannot say, don't get out much of late. It would be a shame for his memory to fade completely. I would be surprised if the couple of human interest news stories published about him are not framed at the store, but thanks for stirring another fond recollection of the waving giant in overalls of my youth.

I remember hearing from my mum of a similar man who lived in a town called Ipswich in England. It wasn't as local, in many ways, as the town consists of about 250,000 people. However, he was well known due to the fact that he sold newspapers in the town centre. Even when he wasn't working, he would ask people about their day with genuine interest. Apparently, he always had a smile on his face. Apparently he was a guy who really seemed to care about everyone he came across. While there still hasn't been a statue erected in his name yet, the local council have been talking for a long time about erecting one of him in front of the town hall roughly in the position of his old stand.

Johnny Barnes would have been a comfort to Bermudians during these trying Covid times! Also, I love Bermuda - and I visited three years before Johnny's passing, though I didn't see him himself (although I did pass by that site, but it was the wrong time of day).

I live in Augsburg( germany) and we also have this „crazy person“ everybody knows. He is called the king of augsburg and is always walking around, barefooted, looking out for people. I would say he is as important to us as most of our famous buildings etc.

I think the equivallent in my city (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) would be the Celton guy. He wanted to make comics, but got rejected by every publisher he tried, so he started to make them by himself, he would find a traffic jam and he would go there, most of the times wearing a yellow suit, with a giant sign advertising his superhero comics (that were set in the city itself btw) to sell them. But, unlike Bermuda, the city is huge, so many of the over 5 million inhabitants probably still have never heard of him even though he's been selling his comics for over 10 years now, and actually finding him is a rare event, when I last saw him it almost felt like I went back in time.

This guy? kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWWlr6OJaZStmLg.html He's good! I'm in the process of selling off my old comics, undergrounds included - and he's got a good consistent style. I see in this later video he's put his price up vimeo.com/49721633 - but what he badly needs is a double-sided sign.
