This is Not a Cactus
"Wow, what a pointless episode. It seems like he put this together at the last minute as a response to some side-bet he'd been running with his wife during the filming! What a loser."
You are correct. That's exactly what happened. I am a loser. But sometimes in life you've got a lick a new floor, even if it tastes all fluffy.
Enjoy!

It's one of the most lighthearted, subtle but deep observations I've been hit by for a while. We sometimes infer so much, get so arrogant in our assumptions and defend them so much before we are willing to stop and actually ask the easy question of 'let me just see for myself if I'm right about this'.

I love the drone videography in your videos.
Wow, I can't tell you how profound your cactus analogy is. It just blew my mind when I think about it.
Euphorbia esula: another plant in the euphorbiaceae family, commonly known as "leafy spurge." The spurge, indeed, comes from its laxative properties. It's invasive where I live and a huge problem in the rangelands, but since I'm in a city I get to enjoy its interesting flowers and milky sap. Sure it spreads quickly but it's also easy enough to pull out along with being a short-lived perennial so it isn't a problem for our 100% pesticide, herbicide and added fertilizer organic garden that it borders!
You both look great, hope you're feeling that way too!
Another case of convergent evolution with cacti. Cactus vs ephedra.
I unironically think this is one of the best videos you've ever made.
SO to me - "What stupid thing are you watching now?" me - "A video about how a husband was wrong and his wife was right?" *SO smirking intensifies*

damn it, I’ve caught up with all of rare earth. now I have to wait for new episodes like a peasant
I had the same education from a former girlfriend while riding a train through Spanish countryside years ago...that is when I first heard the terms "euphorbs" and "convergent evolution"...I'm from New Mexico desert, it was a delight to see this and understand the process in biological terms
I spent two months living on a desert island off Eritrea. Aside from some scrubby grasses, euphorbia was the major plant life. Goats love to munch on it.
A plant that looks like cactus but not actually a cactus, losing bet with wife, licking floor, and some dude named Kazuki. Makes perfect sense.
Only Evan Hadfield can make a deep, interesting, philosophical and meaningful video about the fact that something isn’t a cactus.
Another great episode.
You have the best of both worlds. A father who takes you to the stars and a wife who brings you back to earth. A rare earth.

I came here to comment about that look Kata was giving you but everyone already did that. You are a one hell of a lucky man, Evan!
I saw a different type of them in Kenya. They grew so tall and had a trunk like a tree but leaves that looked like cactus.
