Such a good overview of the evolution of shiny hunting from this suuuper obscure little hobby to one of the main ways people enjoy Pokemon! There are so many facets of shiny hunting that are so hard to convey (like the "value" of shinies), and you knocked it out of the park talking about how your personal value you put into a shiny is all that really matters at the end of the day. I'm so glad to still see so many familiar faces like you still around still looking for these sparkly animals all these years later!

Most definitely. I think at the end of the day, what people enjoy about shiny hunting just comes down to personal preference. I think for me, I like hunting full odds more (I started with methods in oras, but once we got to PLA I kinda decided I prefered full odds more) I don't think theres any one wrong way to shiny hunt, because if we go off the logic of safari zone, It just comes down to the individual. I do think a good balance is good though, one method shouldn't completely outclass another method, they should all be set to different preferences (Like how masuda is lower odds, but it sometimes takes longer than full odds) I think its because of this, its why I don't enjoy SV as much, since it feel like it limits your options a bit as far as how you want to hunt. At the end of the day though, I feel like no matter what, what matters is that the person has fun.

It hits home everytime you say that you started KZread to make some friends because I never had many friends, let alone people that liked pokemon. It's crazy to think that I found a group of people with similar interests until college and was able to let my inner child loose with them playing Pokemon, trading, and battling. Even more insane that pokemon is now so massive on KZread that even big streamers and KZreadrs do nuzlockes and shiny hunt. Little did we know we were cool all along, we were just ahead of the curve, lol. Love your videos, Lucy. Thank you!

I still remember my first shiny encounter, also at the age of 9. 2007. My brother is sick and is in the hospital, I am visiting him and am currently playing through Pokemon FireRed. It is while searching for Moltres at Mt. Ember that I happen upon a chance encounter with a shiny Slugma, the first shiny I had ever seen in the wild. If I were playing it when I was older, I would've captured it in a heartbeat, but this was before I knew what shiny Pokemon were. I didn't just run away from it like any other wild encounter. No, as soon as I saw the stars shining off it, I turned my game off, fearing that it was damaged by generating an off-color Pokemon. It was only later when my friend informed me what shiny Pokemon were that I realized the mistake I had made. You never forget your first, even if it was a mistake.

Late comment but it was so fun to hear about the history of shiny hunting from someone who was right in the middle of it back then. I clicked on the video expecting it to be a more emotionally-removed, research-based deep dive from someone who started more recently (which is still a valid format) and I absolutely loved the direction it went down. My personal obsession right now is shiny apriball pokemon, which is a whole other thing. When I tell even other players I'm into aprimon, they usually don't know what it is!

My first shiny encounter was a Graveler in Pearl, in the bowels of Iron Island while Riley was following me around. Of course it used Selfdestruct before I could even deal with the Lucario. My most clutch one was in Emerald many years later, a Sunkern in the expanded part of the Safari Zone. My favorite though is the shiny (and marked!) Chewtle I caught at the very beginning of my Shield playthrough that I had on my team for the entire rest of the playthrough.

Your early videos are what gave me the courage to try REs in HG/SS - I remember being shocked when I actually found something after a while. My first Pokemon game was Pearl when I was like 11 and then Soul Silver and I played those games for hundreds of hours each and never stumbled upon a shiny Pokemon. Within the first like 5 hours of starting Moon, I stumbled upon a random shiny Caterpie. My whole time playing Pearl and SSilver, I had no idea shiny Pokemon existed, but by the time Moon came out I had regular access to the internet so I knew all about them. It was still wild to see one in the (digital) flesh for the first time. Sometimes I wonder if I did stumble across shinies as a kid and just ignored them cuz I didn't realize what they were. I know the shiny odds are doubled in the new games, but I only played Moon for like 30 hours vs the literal hundreds I put into the DS games. It seems improbable, but I guess math really do be like that sometimes.

In part because it made sone of the less intensive hunts like masuda method more interesting by splitting it into two phases: the egg hatching half and the wonder trade half. I remember the emotional high I got in ORAS while egg hunting a shiny eevee, getting one the morning for school, then getting a shiny dratini through wonder trades immediately after.

I started shiny hunting on Gen 6. There were three reasons why I got into it: 1. I was already starting SR hunts in Gen 5, but not for shinies, but for triple Max IV special/legendary encounters. There was no "set 3 max IVs" them then, so they actually had lower odds than shinies (1/30k-ish). 2. I also got into Monster Hunter that time, and that game had a bigger desire sensor tease than shiny hunting at times. I will still not forget the Lucent Nargapearl I never had in MH3u. 3. The biggest factor was O-Powers. You walk around and you max your O-Powers regeneration by the end of the day, and after you max out levels and money what are you going to use them on? The only thing remaining is Egg Powers, and so the natural progression was to start Masuda breeding to get shinies. I remember I started with more competitive Pokémon first, so I started breeding Gible, Torchic, Froakie then Scyther. I then had some fun with Baton Pass shenanigans and bred a shiny Eevee for Espeon then a shiny Venonat. I put them all in my Battle Box and had a flex moment every time somebody randomly challenged a battle.

I'd argue the best game for shiny hunting in the series would either be crystal for it's 1/8 odd egg shiny odds, or it's 1/64 shiny breeding method. However a contender for that would 100% be ORAS. Dex Nav, Hordes, Chain Fishing, Masuda, Soft Reset, Random Encounter, and of course shiny charm, not to mention in ORAS if you randomize the game and remove shiny locks you have access to all 719 shiny pokemon, which was the number back in gen 6, I'm well aware we've peaked 1k mons at this point.

My brother had played Black and White and so I knew about the games, but one day I begged him to play the X and Y versions for myself. So he instead he handed me his version of X and said that he wanted me to grind up levels in a route on riolus. So I immediately went to work having fun and stuff. Then I entered a battle with a Litlio. I noticed it had a little sparkly animation and it looked very pale colored. So I freaked out and ran over to my brother saying that the pokemon doesn't look right. He then looked at the game and snatched the console right out of my hands. He claims it was his first ever shiny, but in reality that was my first ever shiny! 😊

I think part of what made shiny hunting more mainstream (aside from it becoming much easier), was that it has slowly become the ONLY singleplayer thing to do once you've beaten the game. Scarlet and Violet don't even have a basic battle facility after DLC, something even Sword and Shield had in the base game. And the last substantial minigames were back in USUM with Mantine Surf and the Ultra Warp Ride. If you want something to do after you've beaten the main story, the one or two post-game quests, and (optionally) completed the pokedex, your only options in Scarlet and Violet are to either: Learn competitive battling and go online, or start shiny hunting, ...and THEN sometimes learn competitive anyway so you can show off your team of shinies when you go online. Tera Raids don't really count since their rewards really just exist to further the other two, with mints to change nature stats, or herba mystica to make shiny sandwiches. They made shiny hunting more accessible not just because it's a good idea, but because it's the basically the ONLY thing you can do now if you don't want to get into competitive.
