The Secret Handheld We Never Got - Lenovo Legion Play
Ойындар
The Lenovo Legion Play is a handheld that leaked all the way back in 2021. Prototypes of this forgotten handheld started to pop up on the used market this week, and I bought one for this video.

Wait... you're in China???? How are you able to access the 'real' internet? I'm pretty sure you just use a VPN, but I never understood exactly how that work... (like I know how a VPN work but couldn't China just block the access to the VPN??? idk... nvm this is totally off topic lol) OR are you in Taiwan and 'have to' say you're a part of China? (Or as we like to say call the mainland: Western Taiwan :P ) Or am I totally wrong and you just misspoke? You clearly grew up in the States because you have ZERO accent at all, and so I just assumed that where you were. I always thought you're name was Japanese, so now I am SUPER CONFUSED... Maybe the Lenovo Legion Play and the Logitech G Cloud were part of the same proposal from Tencent, Which made several units to show to potential business partners, and Logitech was the one who has made the best offer.

The launcher being identical on both devices reminds me of the control layouts in tencent games being identical
@SweBeach2023
Жыл бұрын
With the hardware being identical it seems like the most likely explanation, but with one caveat. If Tencent designed both the hardware and software, which seems likely considering button placement, screen size etc, why did they make both a Lenovo and aa Logitech model as compared to a generic one for the two companies to consider and only once a choice had been made a final product were to be made.

For some reason Lenovo still hasn't brought the Y700 tablet to the global market. Those other tablets with 10" and above screen sizes are just not optimized for handheld gaming.

Amazing video! It's really nice to see a deep dive into a cancelled product. I really like the idea of such devices, but the Logitech G Cloud really missed the proper price tag, when you can get a Steam Deck for 50-100 more dollars. Let's hope we'll see more of them in the future.

Wow. The game pad interface being the same as the G Cloud is kinda nuts. Logitech partnered with Tencent for the G Cloud right? So maybe they made the software and pulled out from Lenovo and moved to Logitech. Edit: I should wait until the end of the video to comment. He said the exact same thing.

Especially considering the emulation power in early 2021. It seems like it was on cusp of mass production and release. So maybe a release in q2/q3 2021. It would have rocked the market then. I think it's very easy - Tenscent create OEM device and proposed it to a few companies to sell under their names. Lenovo desided to skip it away so they proposed it to Logitech, who changed ergonomics a bit and sell it under their names

Hey Taki, I’m wondering if this firmware can be dumped and installed on the GCloud. As it might be the video out on the GCloud is firmware locked. Maybe handing the firmware off to some talented folks can see the changes, find root.. and make a CFW for the GCloud.

It shows that more global brands are keenly watching the handheld gaming market and testing the waters. I would not be surprised if these were deliberately but discretely leaked to the open market in order to see just these types of videos to get users wanting something from Lenovo.
I'm excited about the idea of more mainstream manufacturers getting into the ARM handheld business. Hopefully the G Cloud isn't the end of it
Looks like it's not cancelled!
Thank you so much. I have been thrilled, really. This is the kind of device I want to buy for. But why did they cancel this ?!? It's basically the same thing as g cloud with the same soc and launcher so I don't think you'd like this more than g cloud. If anything it's has worse experience in handling it because of the sharp bump on the back, though I'd say that it has better controller layout than g cloud
Can you please give us the link where you got the device? Just keep it on the low.
Wow Codename Zelda. That's the closest tribute to acknowledging Nintendo as THE INNOVATOR and RIVAL worthy of taking down in the handheld market. Nice touch.

Wait why are you having to use gestures to navigate the menu when you have all those buttons and stuff? I own an Nvidia Shield and I think that it would be annoying to have to use the gestures on the touch screen versus having the three buttons for the menu.
I’m curious what Lenovo products you use? Because I’ve never heard bad things of Lenovo but at the same time I’ve not heard much praise for Lenovo outside of think pad and that used to be years back. What other solid products do they have?

Lenovo still makes a wide variety of Windows PCs and various Android tablets that are generally every bit as good as Samsung's, and priced accordingly. They make the various Legion and Think devices. Lenovo also owns Motorola Mobility, so they're one of the biggest manufacturers of Android phones. In countries where Lenovo still sells phones, they're now often Motos that somebody took an eraser to the "M" logo on the back. I use a Lenovo PC at work and have had a number of Motorola phones. Other than one older Moto E getting battery bloat after a few years, they've all been rock solid. As an American; I tend to think Lenovo should make Motorola their exclusive Android brand and keep Lenovo as exclusively the brand for Windows machines. Both can share the Think and Legion sub brands as needed. They're kind of doing this with the new ThinkPhone, which carries Motorola branding instead of Lenovo's. It's weird; Moto sells Android phones here, but no tablets; while Lenovo has consumer Android tablets just kind of chilling with their Windows business stuff, but no phones (Legion excluded).
if the G Cloud was 150 - 200 usd it would be worth, this thing is awesome for the price they sell it

It will be when they fire sale it
it made sense since Lenovo has gaming Phones that are expensive and capable enough to run the same game cloud service
That device you shown that "looked" different was just a change in shell and buttons. The layout is exactly the same so they most likely upgraded on the on the board a bit as in the cpu and possible button quality. This thing... Feels like a kinda device that is designed to be the foundation any company can build on to. A meet half way device. So even Xbox if they wanted to could get some made, brand it, alter the aesthetics, and Call it the Xbox Series Companion for $250 with some exclusive apps to make it more unique. I expect more of these to slither out of the market with various brands but the layout will make it hella obvious.
@KouD3Graw

Abxylute just released the same device as i said. Same size, same button layout, new shell, and few additions.
I KNEW IT!!!! @ 16:24 AS SOON AS you said that the screen says 'this is a game streaming device' it ALL CLICKED!!! This was made by a Chinese company that marketed it to Lenovo, and this was the pre-production model that was shown off before Lenovo fully pulled the trigger on the launch... but Lenovo SCRAPPED IT!!! And when you said that it had the same interface as the Logitech thing my theory was confirmed. And so we KNOW that TenCent was the company behind all of this now too. you said there was a TenCent App icon on there too. And didn't Logitech release there's in conjunction with TenCent? So this was probably marketed around to different companies to put their name on it and allow TenCent to step into the American market, because they KNEW they could NEVER do it on their own. Not just because of the market no knowing TenCent very well, but because the US Government probably wouldn't allow it!! HAHAHA!!!! So TenCent needed a recognized American name (and maybe even money) to make this happen and YOU have the Lenovo cancelled version of this scheme. AMAZING!!!!! - - - Mind you, I'm just speculating ALL of this, but it seems very likely this is the case!!! HAHA!!!! This thing is SUPER COOL!!!! - Okay I paused the video as you were showing that app, so you may have some more info that disproved my theory and I could be TOTALLY WRONG. LMAO! But I just LOVE little things like this... products that never were, or versions that never materialized. It's a piece of history that hardly ANYONE knows about, until YOU brought it to light!! HAHAHA!!! I hope Lenovo (or TenCent) doesn't give a hoot about this... but I SERIOUSLY DOUBT they will anyway :)

17:10 good call 😂
This device was cancelled because data that showed it would perform poorly, and even worse with competitors entering the market at the same time. As the Logitech G cloud did as well. It was an easy development cycle, since tencent had already built the software to license to multiple brands. Hence why so many models had already entered production in anticipation they would go in presentations/storefronts as demos.
Oh wow I have been commenting before I got to the end and yeah, this 100% became the G Cloud. I wonder how many times this thing bounced around the tech hardware makers. Someone wanted to make a local streaming handheld really bad.
