The search for extraterrestrials | Douglas Vakoch | TEDxGreenville

For over fifty years, astronomers have pointed their telescopes to the sky, looking for signals from advanced civilizations-a project called SETI, the search for extraterrestrial civilizations. So far, they’ve found nothing. But what if there are other civilizations out there, but they’re doing exactly what we are doing-simply listening, and not transmitting? I advocate a new approach to making contact called Active SETI, where we don’t simply listen for signals from extraterrestrials, but instead we send powerful, intentional radio signals to other star systems, in the hope of receiving a reply.
Douglas is president of METI (Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence), a nonprofit research organization that transmits powerful, intentional radio signals to nearby stars, in the hope of eliciting a reply. As an elected member of the International Astronomical Union and the International Institute for Space Law, he explores the scientific and societal dimensions of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

From a philosophical perspective, yes it is, but when your doing the same thing for centuries something has to change. Go to the library you'll see there are so many books on certain topics this because its not understood so the same information is then crammed into 100 different books (i.e. Gravity) whereas in the same pool you'll find topics with only a few books because its something that has been mastered and fully understood. I think in its beauty that was in those times, you could see so much more so they developed a curiosity far more craving than ours. We are developing technology that could do some crazy stuff, which opens up quite a few options, however I think we should broadcast to other stars instead of just listening as we have for 100+ years.

It is amazing but totally untrue. That statement may be a false attribute to some philosopher back then. In the same way some give false attribute to religious figures for seemingly 'prophecies'. He might have articulated such bunch of words, but the speaker is cheating with the meaning. No way he could have meant that. They didn't perceive space as we do today, its just wrong.

OR: What if radio is so primitive that it simply is not used by intelligent beings? What if there is a way to send signals faster than light? What if we discover how to do this in another 500 years (a cosmic millisecond) and we realize radio is as primitive as we see carrier pigeons and smoke signals today?

Aliens aren't going to be any better than us. They're likely the product of the same flawed evolutionary process that we stem from. More likely, they will see how underdeveloped we are and conquer us. Isn't that what all those Christian anthropologists and English imperialists do when they meet a new, "less civilized" society? They conquer and force conformity. That's the way it's always been and still is.

question? The commonly stated range of human hearing is 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Under ideal laboratory conditions, humans can hear sound as low as 12 Hz and as high as 28 kHz, though the threshold increases sharply at 15 kHz in adults, corresponding to the last auditory channel of the cochlea.what happens if aliens might hear in a different hearing range than Ares?We would never hear each other and being able to communicate.SETI is looking for signals but if they are in a different range we would never detect?

@C. Fecteau On Wednesday, May 9th, 2001, over twenty military, intelligence, government, corporate and scientific witnesses came forward at the National Press Club in Washington, DC to establish the reality of UFOs or extraterrestrial vehicles, extraterrestrial life forms, and resulting advanced energy and propulsion technologies. The weight of this first-hand testimony, along with supporting government documentation and other evidence, will establish without any doubt the reality of these phenomena. "The phenomenon of UFOs does exist, and it must be treated seriously." - Mikhail Gorbachev "I can assure you that flying saucers, given that they exist, are not constructed by any power on Earth." - President Harry S Truman "I feel that the Air Force has not been giving out all the available information on these Unidentified Flying Objects. You cannot disregard so many unimpeachable sources." - Honorable John McCormack, Speaker of the House "I believe that these ET vehicles and their crews are visiting this planet from other planets, which obviously are a little more technically advanced than we are here on Earth." - Astronaut Gordon Cooper "I believe the American people are entitled to a more thorough explanation that has been given them by the Air Force. I think we owe it to the people to establish credibility regarding UFOs, and produce the greatest possible enlightenment of the subject." - Former President, Gerald Ford "Of course the flying saucers are real, and they are interplanetary." - Air Chief Marshall Lord Dowding "We have, indeed, been contacted perhaps even visited by extraterrestrial beings and the US government, in collusion with the other national powers of the Earth, is determined to keep this information from the general public." - Former Special Assistant to the Executive Director of the CIA, Victor Marchetti "I am convinced that UFOs exist because I have seen one." - Former President Jimmy Carter "It is time for the truth to tbe brought out, behind the scenes high ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about the UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense. I urge immediate Congressional action to reduce the dangers from secrecy about unidentified flying objects." - Former CIA Director, Vice Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter "I must admit that any favorable mention of the flying saucers by a scientist amounts to extreme heresy and places the one making the statement in danger of the excommunication by the scientific theocracy." - Frank B. Salisbury, Ph.D

The signal isn't powerful enough. Same reason why you might not have service on your phone. Then of course, extremely advanced civilizations might have super antennas capable of receiving the extremely weak signal, but it's unlikely they're watching the big bang theory. Also if they're so advanced, radio signals are probably prehistoric to them. They might have developed faster than light communication, which is kinda essential if you're traveling millions or billions of light years among the stars.

@@xdxxdxdxdxdxdxdxdxdxdxdxdx8578 No man, there are no trillions of galaxies, 200 billion is the highest expected. And not all galaxies are as habitable as Milkyway, even in Milky way the temp goes pity high near the center. So there are a billion things you can eliminate from your permutation. And in 5billion years of earth, we have only made it for a century with enough tech to call ourselves species that can explore space. So, you see earth had more years than NO. of galaxies, What I mean that people should consider timing a much bigger factor than, (Habitable Planets/ Total Planets) is incomplete It should be like (Habitable Planets * Habitable Time at a particular portion of the universe)/ (Total Planet * Total Time) No, a very good depiction, but I guess you understand what I mean.

@@rogerthat365 The fact that we only know the known universe, because keep in mind it is what we know so far, the thing is, life can survive in different ways than us, so we should not compare ourself to extraterresial beings, for example some sea creatures can live deep in the ocean and survive very hard water pressure that a few decades back that we thought was impossible. You could be right, but base on pure maths and probability its more likely that we are not alone and there are probably millions of more advance civilization out there. Remember when we thought that we were at the center and the universe revolve around us? Only to realise that we are just one out of many planets orbiting our sun. We think or want to feel specail but the reality is, we are not.

Why would it be a bad idea? Exploration was always frowned upon by some supposed intelligent persons. No one has dibs on the thirst for getting out there and trying to see what's on the other side of that "Mountain". Not even that bear that went over the mountain to see what it could see.

He makes a good arguement that is fully built on the assumption that aliens will be nice and contact will be mutually beneficial. You talk about paying our dues, but what about our primary fealty to life itself. Shouldn't we be assuming the worst - that this is the only occurance of life in the universe. Shouldn't we be doing our duty as life forms and infecting other planets?

Why do we always talk about the most ridiculous ideas first instead of the most plausible. Quite simply, space is too large and vast for civilizations to expand and survive for very long, not sufficient (for most) to ever meet each other. Our galaxy may have, say, 2 or 3 other technological civilizations in it today, and every few thousand years as planet habitability becomes possible and life evolves, slowly, another 2 or 3 more while 2 or 3 older ones die off. It's either that or there are other general limitations to them expanding forever, such as no race ever having the collective ability and will to just keep expanding (assuming you can get out of a solar system at all). It's as simple as that. Boring, but most plausible.

History, and evolution, is not linear and progressive. It is adaptive. Potential intelligent life won't technologies in the same fashion we did. For most of our history we didnt have radio technology. It's not unlikely, in my mind, that other technological civilizations are out there, but most places with other life won't have any technology. The bigger question is the Fermi Paradox. Which some here think they know the answers to, but its all urban myths, pop culture, and speculations without strong support.

The zebra analogy is perfect, except... none of the viewers (with IQ over 80) would climb the fence at that point and start feeding the Zebra with apples. But sure we would skip the giraffes and watch Zebra for a while and have a laugh. The funniest part is that people believe that aliens are only like 200 years ahead of us. In reality they are possibly billions of years more advanced. They don't think on our timescale and don't have the necessary attention span to deal with us. (Would you talk to someone who takes 2 years to say hello?) Moreover, everything we may want to tell them... well, they already know that and chances are they don't even have to be here physically. (UFO craft is sooo 20th century...)

Intelligent extraterrestrial beings exist in my opinion, but according to the 'Rare Earth Hypothesis' they are very few and far between to make them practically non existence in our own time - the time that humans are and will be around. I think the evidence is pointing to the 'Rare Earth Hypothesis'.
