The Scrapping Run

Filmed on board CANBERRA during her very last weeks, this video gives a glimpse of the ship and her skeleton crew with the final sailing from Southampton on 10th October 1997, up to her beaching at the shipbreakers in Pakistan.

It is such a bleeding shame the photographer on this scrapping run did not film the interior of the ship such as the first and second class dining rooms; some cabins, and utility rooms. I remember the day she was launched and set off on her Maiden Voyage. My cousins travelled on her when emigrating to Australia back in 1961. I watched her many times thereafter when she called in at Melbourne, Australia. I was so sad to see her bow cut off, and I could not watch anymore. It broke my heart to see her end up this way.

Very sad to see her ending up like this, but I have many happy memories of this great ship, I joined her as crew in Belfast at Harland and Wolff shipyard as she was still fitting out in April 1961- was aboard her during trials, and subsequent shakedown cruise prior to our maiden voyage to Australia, I stayed with here for almost 2 years, she was the best ship ever and a fantastic first crew, always in my memories :)

Thus ship was as much of a British icon as the HMS Victory, QE2, RMS Queen Mary, Royal Yacht Britannia, SS Great Britain, Big Ben, the Tower of London, St.Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, or Stonehenge. If there was talk about scrapping or demolishing any one of those, there would be a huge outcry and uproar.

A daughter of Harland and Wolff goes to her end in the dead of night, the lonely pipes serenading her and a few night owls saluting her as as she goes. Out of all the ships that H&W built, it's sad to think only one returned, the little Nomadic.

In the sixties I was an electrical fitter at Marchwood power station. With a grandstand view of all the famous liners going in and out of Western Docks. Canberra was the star of the parade. A magnificent sight. I was encouraged to go to sea in 1970 as Junior engineer. Joined my first ship in Nagasaki June that year.

I was a wee lad who stood at her bulbous bow when she was launched. When the bottle smashed, there was a seemingly long delay, about 12 seconds before the ship was perceived to slip seaward. My father was head foreman in charge of the slip.

It's sad that Canberra wasn't saved. It would have made a nice hotal loke QE2 or Rotterdam. Premier Cruise Line tried to buy Canberra, but P&O refused to sell her to her as they didn't want her to sell for a different flag, even though Premier had the highest bid. Instead, they sold Canberra to the second highest bidder which was the Pakistani shipbreakers.

I think it would have been awesome if Premier Cruise Line had bought her, however having the color red on her hull would not have been fitting. I sailed on some of their ships, as a travel agent and when they started out they did well. It was going to be very upsetting when the ROTTERDAM was going to PCL and they were going to change her name to BRB IV. But a lot of HAL passengers past and then present, as well as travel agents were against it and they named her REMBRANDT, kept her hull color the same. We got to sail on her before PCL folded into bankruptcy. They took good care of her.

This is a really special documentation of such a special ship. Really appreciate it being filmed and really appreciate it being shared like this. Really gained some insight, too, into the laying up for scrapping process; certainly what the off-boarding process is like.

Sad. I live up in the NW highlands of Scotland and it was nice to see Stornaway on the board with the distance - I live not far from there, it’s a 2 hour crossing across the Minch. I have a fantastic book about the Canberra and her role in the Falklands War. It’s got detailed entries in diary format that charts her modifications from civilian liner to military ship. Really good read with lots of amazing colour photos....Canberra. The Great White Whale Goes To War....that’s its name. Sad to see such a beautiful lady end up that way. I enjoyed this video though - would’ve been great to sail on that final journey.

It's just a thought but I'm not sure why the life-boats, deckchairs, and other easily detachtable items were not sold at auction in the UK. I would assume some of the prestige furnishings were saved before scrapping in Pakestan.

I wonder why they didn't run the ship full steam ahead (beaching) up on to the beach at high tide like they usually do in Pakistan? Such a sad end to a graceful and proud ship that the "Canberra" was.

Well given it was owned and operated by a British company and operated out of Britain you are clearly writing bullcrap. Of course by 1997 it was owned by a private leasing company so I am not sure where you get the idea 'Britain desperately needed the few millions they got for it , if that' because the scrap price would have gone to them. But then people like you don't do facts do you? Just cow manure to throw at the UK. Sad useless Mong.

I was a Engineer Apprentice in 1960 and had the pleasure of observing most aspects of Canberras building in Harland and Wollfs Shipyard in Belfast . I and my team took over the stripping of the four Turbines and two main motors . Built by Brirish Thompson Heuston in Rugby they were required to be stripped and have the journals electroplated with Molybdenum Disulphide by hand . This to avoid scuffing when they were turned over in the Ship , for the very first time . I did Dock Staff on her in Southampton but neve4 sailed . Now well retired in Sligo on the Wild Atlantic Way , I'm 83 in April 2023 . During my service I experienced many happenings . Destruction of the British Fleet numbers for one . This caused a huge amount of grief to me and thousands of us Chief Engineers , as we had to search and work from short contracts on myriad Companies , terminating in a voyage on Svitzer Korsakov owned by Maersk Shipping for service in Sakhalin Island in Far Eastern Russia . This badly organised voyage organised by Redwise of Holland , saw us pirated off Somalia . If you want more info. Read Colin Darches book . He was voyage Captain . We suffered together with our scratch Russian Crew as Pirates ripped through Accomodation armed with AK47 rifles and RPGs . We drank drippings from our Airconds when our water ran out . 47 days of heat deprivation and the company had refused Darches request for a Cook and had threatened cessation of work on four occasions. It's all in my book " 47 Days . With Somali Pirates " . Looking for a Marine Ghostwriter I hope to have it in print someday . Captain Phillips and Tom Hanks , had it easy on the Maersk Alabama , methinks the movie was purely Hollywood . Want to use Netflix and watch " A Highjacking " a realistic Danish movie about a 2008 Somali heist that I loved as it was like we encountered off the Somali Coast . Actually showed the effects upon the Headoffice personell and MD when things were of the actual negotiations and effects on him and his Staff . A Seaman's Movie . Forget Tom Hanks he was only acting ; some of the Danish actors had been on the end of Somali brutality . Won't spoil it for you . Let me know on my Facebook PIRACY EXPERIENCES and put a smile on my face . Yes I had digressed . Cannot understand how such a wonderful passenger ship was scrapped after Maggie Thatcher RIP ploughed so many millions of taxpayers hard earned pounds into her . And that Aluminium upper works was so beautifully crafted in Belfast too . Even the lifeboats and their mechanisms were a joy . I know there was some fatality due to electrical problems too and Turbine blading removal early on due I believe to vibration . So the efficiency dropped meaning P and O shareholders got smaller bang for their investments . Why was this Queen of Maritime Admirers melted down ?
