The SCP Foundation - Down the Rabbit Hole

The SCP Foundation website: www.scp-wiki.net/
If you want a place to start at The Foundation, my personal favorite is The Human Beowulf Complex, aka SCP-763.
I'm a huge fan of the SCP Foundation, enough that I GMed a campaign based in the setting and made audio files like the one in the trailer for it. In order to save on time, I unfortunately had to skip over the roleplaying tradition that's still alive and well today in the SCP community.

My favorite SCP is totally SCP-504, the Ballistic Tomatoes, a strain of tomatoes that react exclusevely to bad comedy by flinging themselves at incredible speeds at the source, often causing injuries and ocasionally fatalities.

Corleone....what an ironic name in relation to what I'm going to say....I follow the same principle as written in The Godfather: making threat is a show of weakness. I don't make promises of threat, I act.The one who is loudest with their list of threats without acting upon it with effective outcome is the weakest. Reason why in real life if I'm really angry I could hit people but I used to warn those who are close to me that in anger if I pick up an weapon object....run away....because I don't mean to wave it around as a threat. I will use it. Edit: an in context to the website drama being a whiny arrogant person against the wish of a higher power is pathetic. If you are really a good writer then publish your work and make money like Stephen King....why bother getting high getting your "dick sucked" by online fans.... Another reason why in real life I write research paper instead of fiction. My word is canon...my word is the law of nature itself....I don't need fans to flatter my ego, they either with me or they are all wrong. At least until someone else could do better. =)

This was an awesome video! But just a little correction: Object classes do not define the danger of an anomaly, it actually measures the *dificulty to contain.* It's easier to explain with the "Box": If you leave your anomaly in a box, and nothing happens, it's probably Safe. If you leave your anomaly in a box, and you don't know what'll happen, it's probably Euclid. If you leave your anomaly in a box, and it breaks out of it, it's probably Keter. If your anomaly *is* the box, it's probably Thaumiel.

there is one... we dont speak of it jk the hidden class is Apollyon, if we return to the box example Apollyon essentially means that the box is breaking and whats inside the box can destroy existence itself, in many cases there is no way to keep things marked as Apollyon permanently contained so the foundation can only hope and pray that something doesn't happen to speed up the universes inevitable doom.

12:27- hate to be rude, but that is false. Keter ≠ dangerous. Basically, a keter is difficult to contain. I believe they said something along the lines of this on the website- “a cat that randomly swaps places with another cat on earth would be a keter class, due to how hard it is to contain.” As well as “a button that could destroy the universe would be safe class, as long as it’s secured where no one can touch it.” They also talk about what is known as the box test- “If you put the SCP in a box and it stays, it’s safe. If you put it in a box and you aren’t sure what will happen, it’s euclid. If you put it in the box and it escapes, it’s keter. If it _is_ the box, it’s thaumiel.” These aren’t exact quotes, just off the top of my head. So yeah. Safe means it can be contained easily Euclid means it’s not fully understood or it’s unpredictable- humanoid SCPs are often put into this class, and this class is also the most numerous. Keter means it’s difficult or sometimes even impossible to contain Thaumiel is a rarer class, but these are used to help contain other SCPs Neutralized is self explanatory, either it was accidentally or purposely destroyed or deactivated. Just had to get that off my chest. Hope it helps. Edit: I did forget a few, my bad. Apollyon is completely uncontainable, such as SCP-001: When Day Breaks. You can’t contain the sun. Explained is what it sounds like- the SCP is no longer considered anomalous since its properties are understood better.

First the mad doctor that has made his life goal to understanding the unknown, with his knowledge, cunning, and unhinged sanity, he rose to the top with frightening efficiency. Next, a military vet that was the only survivor of his unit after encountering an SCP and his skills were recruited to become the head of SCP Response teams. When in the shadows he was the leader the entire time. And then Dog head, no literally. Yes, so immersive.

I'm not typically a fan of horror, but I love the SCP Foundation. What I like about it is that it gets rid of all of the dumb decision-making horror story characters typically have and comes up with creatures/anomalies/etc that are scary even if you *know* what you're doing. Basically, steelmanned horror movie monsters. Also, I tend to like the stranger SCP's such as the Hateful Star and the Minus Level, which are really novel thought experiments in addition to being creepy.

  • @Low_commotion

    @Low_commotion

Ender Skies Minus world is only slightly creepy, but I like it because it focuses on being weird (and promoting further thought and discussion of "What would it be like?" more). Not every SCP is creepy, for example I don't find 2000 scary at all, despite it talking about humanity having to be loaded from backup several times. Ditto for the Architect (184) and "Inside", but those are also among my favorites.

My favorite SCP is 2966 It’s essentially a self refilling toilet paper dispenser. Of course, there’s a twist. It creates new TP by absorbing heat energy from the surrounding area, so a nuclear reactor is attached to it to provide the necessary energy so it doesn’t turn the area into a tundra wasteland. The problem is that if the housing gets too much TP, it’ll go super critical and blow up (exact numbers are redacted, but there’s references to the 50 megaton Czar Bomba). This means it’s stored is a super secluded area, manned by a skeleton crew. 3 times a day at precise times, a D class goes into its containment and removes 10 sheets to maintain adequate equilibrium. Supposedly it’s superb TP too.

That actually gets me wondering... What is a Creepypasta supposed to be nowadays and how do you differentiate between a Creepypasta and just another Horror Story on the internet. When I was younger, I use to think/believe that the rules for a Creepypasta, while loose were: They have to involve a modern day twist and they need to be at least slightly believable. This is why characters/creatures like the Rake, Slenderman, or even Eyeless were such popular characters for the fanbase at the time. They were designed with a certain down to earth 'believability' at the time. And while many (Including me) could call them and their stories underwhelming, it was the great mystery and subtlety that made those stories work in a way. Nowadays, most Creepypasta characters are designed to be Mary Sue/Self-Insert characters with a sort of Vanity Project Fix. Take for example: Helen The Bloody Painter, Judge Angel, Clockwork, Hobo Heart, or Toby. Rather then try to make a story that builds up atmosphere or makes a good story, the stories seem to be made to appeal to the author's fantasies and hope that the character becomes popular. Looking at you Sonic.EXE. While I understand that a demographic like this will always exist because of how everyone has access to do what they want with a story and the characters of the Creepypasta Fanon because they're public domain, I can't shake the fact that they've lost their identity because of how long it's been. And while I do appreciate a set of stories where anything is possible, Creepypastas I feel like have lost their charm BECAUSE no one can really tell what separates a Creepypasta from any other scary story. Now don't get me wrong, there are still good scary stories being written but I'm not sure if they need to be Creepypastas anymore, like when you listen to a scary story nowadays it can just be a scary story. Some of these Creepypastas take place in Space or in a Fantasy Universe, I feel like that might be breaking the rules but perhaps there were no rules in Creepypastas to begin with and then you see why they lost their identity as opposed to the SCP which attempted to do a strict resurgence of those rules. I suppose a spirital successor to the Creepypastas in my opinion are those scary Reddit posts about real things that may have happened to them because there's always a sense of grounded-ness to their stories. Don't know if people could categorize it at this point and it's not lie you need to.

When I was much younger I was an admin of a similar forum. There were a couple of users who had decent work, but pretty toxic when dealing with others. After an incident we talked about banning one of them, but the majority of admins (not me) wanted to give him a warning. A warning was given but he really didn't give a shit. More incidents happened and it was clear he and his cohorts would never be banned. I eventually left the site. I was asked to return because I was pretty good with graphics and web design but it was no longer worth my effort. People I knew kept on leaving over two years and the site was removed. I can no longer find a trace of it anywhere. It is as if it did not existed. Having gone through this, SCP did the smart thing.

I get alot of scp writers are gay but if every storyline has a lgbtq person it ends up feeling like fan fiction. They go back and fuck up classic articles like the teenage succubus without having decent replacement, also every mystery being explained in a lackluster way and several hundred timelines most of which do not stick to what SCP was about. It Sucks. (My examples: transgender alien is bad, tumblr posting meteorite is bad, teenage succubus is edgy trash, montauk has a thousand explanations now, site 15 and SCP one, any tales or abandoned series seriously take ur pick there's like ten that go nowhere)

  • @LethargicScientist

@@sometimeslol5578 are you just saying that they write too many gay people? A lot of the authors are lgbtq and they want to write something that mirrors their own experience. I don't see why that should be a problem. There's still a lot of creative stuff coming out of the site and I don't see why the amount of lgbtq characters should change that. I think it's important to have a range of diverse authors and creators. Maybe you have to sift through a *bit* more garbage than before but honestly both new and established creators are doing some really interesting writing right now, and I'd argue that it's more interesting than ever. And saying that there's "too much variation" is a very wierd complaint IMO. I would agree that they need to tighten the reigns a bit in regard to crappy tales but I don't think that's a reasonable argument for "the entire site is garbage now." I'd also like to say that I think the fact that so many authors have explained Montauk is a neat little phenomenon that is really egged on by the text itself. Edit: also I like tumblr meteorite :(

As someone who was around on /x/ during the creation of SCP, I can tell you that the site, at least in the beginning, was a highly insular group prone to questionable actions. There was an "in group" of creators whose works often skirted or broke the rules that supposedly governed how stories should be written. Whats worse is I saw, more than once, a would-be author from outside that in-group post their work and have it taken down only for a strikingly similar article written by part of that in-group go up shortly after to wide acclaim. Of course, if anyone complained they were banned and their posts removed.

Funny I was shown the Foundation some five years ago, have been writing my own entries for at least three, never submitted anything, and now videos covering it are popping up in my feed. Maybe I should pool all of them together again and finally polish them up for submission...

any tips for writing as someone that does not have a lot of knowledge within the universe of SCP? Like, things with Sarkicism and the Broken God Should I dive more entirely and read all of the materials or should I just read the guides and wirte then wait for feedback?

H Brüggs You mean like, making allusions to other in-universe scips and shit? That's basically just cross-referencing. DO NOT cross-reference in your first SCP article. Just read up the advice on-site make the thing stand out on its own.

When i was recommended this video, one time,it was during a video playing in landscape-mode, with it being down on the recommended videos, but, weirdly enough, the thumbnail of this video was with it's only distinguishable element normal (which is the SCP logo), and the rest of the thumbnail completely transparent, with even the video i was watching playing through it. I don't know what exactly happened, why it happened,or why won't it happened again.

The SCP Foundation is a really fascinating website not to mention absolutely terrifying with some of the objects the Foundation have got contained or monitor closely, like SCP-2399 "A Malfunctioning Destroyer" which is some sort of alien structure not unlike that of the Death Star that's stuck on Jupiter and SCP-610 "The Flesh That Hates", this last one is a really disturbing disease that mutates people and animals into hideous creatures and covers the area in some sort of a fleshy growth, I'd recommend that people have a look at the article for that one.
