The Final Fantasy House | Down the Rabbit Hole

In the early 2000s, when connecting with other fans of Final Fantasy VII, a young person is invited to live with others in the fandom, but things quickly turn dour.

A number of people have brought this up, so I think I should mention this: when making this video, I was aware that Jen is still an active soulbonder who has moved on to the Hannibal fandom, but I decided to cut off the video before that point for two reasons. First, my intention was not to talk about Jen, but rather the Final Fantasy House. Second, the video was already pushing 40 minutes, and to cover Jen's further activities would have easily sent it past the 1 hour mark. This would have made the production cycle prohibitively long and the video much less accessible, neither of which I was willing to allow. This does not, however rule out a video about Jen or Tattle-Crime in the future.

someone in one of this videos said they knew her and said "in early 2000s, in the place they lived in, she didn't really stand out" as the college town was full of punks, emos, skaters, and proto-weebs, stoners and they hung out at a nearby arcade sometimes. So her wearing a lab coat and being a FF7 fan was 'meh'. EDIT: found it. @altec surtan said "I use to work at the north Atherton-walmart back then. Renee use to come in at night to go shopping and yes she would dress as Hojo. I can not recall anybody with her. She did not stink and was very talkative and normal beside her dress code. Granted we had short chats about video games especially about Final Fantasy seven and the theory it was based on Earth. State College back then was still grungy and had character, play-land was still active filled with stoned kids and cigarette smoke, nirvana's closet was on it last leg. Coffee shops and Asian restaurants. There was all kinds of weirdos back then, so she never stood out compared to the other the goths, punks, proto weebs and skaters. This really fucks with my head, never would of guessed what a hot mess she and her friends were behind closed doors. "

People talk pretty unhealthily about neurodivergence a lot, and others rightfully pick them up on victimising people because they happen to think or behave differently. I think there's a lot of discussion to be had about where 'mental illness' and pity end and 'abuse' starts. I think the line is just that: at the point where you 'being yourself' is abuse to others - destroying their property, controlling their lives, refusing to contribute or aid those around you - is the point where you can no longer claim you're just neurodivergent and should be treated with respect. There are people who are heavily autistic or have other 'disorders' who are perfectly capable of understanding and interacting with society, but society doesn't accept them because they act weird, or don't express themselves the way others do. Especially when things like therapy and medication clearly help you coexist with others without abuse, you can't claim to just 'think differently' and get a pass for abusive behaviour. I suppose it's important for people to know this so they don't get sucked into codependent (or worse) relationships with people who try to co-opt messages of tolerance to get away with abuse. If someone in your life is hurting you like this, get out and get help.

A lot of impressionable, often mentally ill kids, being told by adults sometimes twice their age that they knew each other in a past life or were lovers in a past life and need to date/move closer to each other/be loyal to each other? Yeah, this is where this shit leads. It's not all about the lulz, it's about abusing people under the guise of love and community. This is just one case. There are so, so many more.

Wouldn't laughing at them be a kind of a solution to the problem? Kids do not want to be ridiculed, and it's probably the easiest way to get them to realize the people they are interacting with them are not good influence. On top of that it's actually kind of funny how ridiculous some of those communities get, and people tend to share funny things, making the victim more likely to see the message.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of this stems from a desire to be unique and important, the fulfilment of that could overshadow the embarrassment of being ridiculed.

As someone who was abused at a very impressionable age under the guise of otherkin community? 100% agree. Though I feel like there isn’t anything /Inherently/ wrong with the concept of otherkin and connecting with fictional characters in that way there’s So much toxicity and manipulation from the online culture the community creates. The worst part is the fact that abusers can Much easier groom victims by telling a victim that they were important to eachother in their past life to convince them that there’s no need to establish boundaries or build trust before jumping into a serious relationship/friendship. Plus from my experience most people who id with otherkin are lgbt minors (like I was) so altogether a Very impressionable group of people who often seek out support from these online communities they might not be getting irl without realizing they could end up being taken advantage of

I live and work in state college. There was a point in the 90s that my group of friends became annoyed with the Vampire LARPers. We spent a night hunting them down, pretending we were too stupid to know they weren’t real. This effectively diminished the population by getting many of them remembering it was a game, not a way of life. There is something here that’s allows people to be supported waaaaay to far into a delusion.

"Cetra Queen" Jenova? Wow, she didn't even understand the character she was imitating. Jenovah wasn't a Cetra, this was a mistaken assumption initially made by the Shinra scientists that discovered her remains. The Cetra where a human offshoot that engaged in magic and mysticism that mostly died out after Jenovah preyed on them. In reality, Jenovah was a deceptive alien parasite that would manipulate others into serving her own ends... hmm, maybe Jen DID understand the character.
