I think you had a seizure. I had a brain injury 2 years ago and my brain requires a ton of sleep to heal. It's only happened twice, but if I'm lacking in sleep I tend to have a seizure. I start feeling disoriented, dizzy, a sense of impending doom, and then I pass out and my brain goes haywire and my body starts shaking.

I learned that you can train your body to immediately fall into REM Sleep. REM sleep is the period of sleep where we dream and where we start to feel the benefits of sleeping. Awaking after REM allows one to feel refreshed. Awaking during nearly always leads to the opposite. It's why some people feel great after getting 5 hours sleep but feel exhausted after 8. REM begins around 15 mins after dozing off. However, experts contend that if a person is only allowed to sleep for a short, 20 min burst, the body will begin to adjust that time to compensate, leading to REM sleep immediately after dozing off. In doing so, a person need only sleep for 20 min bursts scattered throughout the day, meaning one could have restful sleep for as little as 2 hours per day. It's been observed in soldiers in combat zones, where the environment gives little time for proper rest. However, to train the body to respond in this way can mean weeks and weeks of exhaustion, essentially sleep deprivation, something very harmful to the body. When I first heard of this, I immediately thought that this would work perfectly for Batman, a person who leads a full day and night life at the same time.

Your example of soldiers doing this leads to the question of if its sustainable. It’s probably not. Soldiers don’t keep up this type of sleep schedule for months on end. Doing that would lead to health detriments.

Pretty sure that's one of those "Yea, you CAN do it and science backs up it's possible but living like that is going to lead to massive problems down the line." You can do that kinda thing for a while (I've had to get on with super short burst for weeks a few times) but it will catch up to you. After all, there's a reason our body wants 6-8 hours.

This got me thinking about an idea of an Arkham game where you could still do everything but you have to sleep for a few hours and things like free flow combat and stealth would be more difficult if you didn't get the sleep you needed. And to make things more interesting you're on a time limit with the main story and side missions kinda like the Dead Rising series and you have to be Bruce Wayne during the day and keep up appearances to the public. But the bright side is that it's a bit easier with Batman than it is for Frank West because Batman could travel by Batmobile or grappling hook and glide. The downside is that you wouldn't have time to solve riddles and collect trophies. I think it's an interesting concept, but I understand if someone thinks it's stupid.

Despite him rushing to Batcave the entire time, he would always be stopped by something happening on his way… over and over. If it takes 3.5 worth of days of worn to end crime in Gotham DURING A SINGLE PATROL….. hell no. Gotham is LOADED with crime, big and small.

I've had tons of family and friends in the Army, Marines, and even Navy, and I can tell you, that 4 hours of sleep business, is quaint but not leaned on. They all rather get 8 hours if they can. Its been tested and obviously several CIA operatives, Special Forces, BUDS, etc have said its doable....I myself have tried. However, Batman does this repeatedly, days on end. Armed forces still need plenty of sleep. Anything that requires very little sleep in the real world, is usually spontaneous and does NOT go on for long periods of time. Eventually your body will crash and make up those hours. They make Batman ridiculous of course, however, if they were gonna add micro napping, they simply could just had him develop a compound that rejuvenates his brain ala a concoction of Lazarus pit juice (lite) and some other compound he perfected. Real easy write in that sticks to canon.

Holy crap, I naturally do some of this. I have sleep apnea and according to my sleep study results, I go into and out of third stage sleep in seconds rather than the typical 30 minute cycles. While it isn't the same micro-sleep that you described here, my brain often puts me to sleep at random intervals throughout the day. Typically this is only a few seconds to a few minutes at a time, but other times I have lost several hours. Mostly when this happens I don't even realize it and will immediately resume what I was doing prior to these micro naps. I still try to get a regular night's sleep when I can, but most of the time I can't sleep for more than 3-4 hrs at a time. It's crazy that this kind of awkward sleeping arrangement might actually be better than a typical one.

Man, Batman just feels like a on nerd sleep. I mean, that is how I feel when I find some cool game to play, and I play it so much that I didn't notice when it is morning already lol. But, back in my school days I once feel asleep in the bus on a way home and nearly missed my stop after school, asking driver to stop not far away from my grandma's house. It was like a down the hill. So instead of going home, I got out there and went to see my grandma back then, and then went home. But I was so embarrassed of what happened that, I just lied to my grandma that I just decided to visit her after school lol. But reality was that, it was a very hot sunny day back at that time in school, and I was so tired from all that heat and lessons that I could not hold up and when I got in to the bus and went home, I just turned off like a freaking computer and later woke up at another stop. I only told my parents back then of what happened, and next thing you know, instead of doing my home work and studying at school, I had a chance to relax and just take a break from all of this. And now, years after that, that I'm 30 years old, I can just fall asleep just while watching video on youtube. And all I had to do is, to turn my hip and legs to the right while sitting on chair, and maintain my body in straight forward position for 3 minutes or so and that's it, I suddenly get tired, dizzy and just wanted to take a nap. Or other words, my health are ruined by this moment.

Sleep is like the night shift. The most productive part of the day, and If you don’t have it then you’re likely going to be completely overwhelmed within a couple days.

Ive always been able to fall into a deep meditative state where I dream but am still totally conscious of my surroundings and have often used it when staying up for more than one day at a time because it'd make me feel rested. Didn't realize that it's an actual scientifically recognized thing, I'd just tell my friends lmao I'm a witcher
