The Science of Distance Running
Ғылым және технология
This week Reactions is taking a look at the chemistry behind marathon running. The science that goes on in athlete's bodies is pretty neat. Athletes push their bodies for miles and deal with cramping, dehydration and every runner's worst fear: that extreme form of fatigue called "hitting the wall." Why is endurance running so difficult? With the New York City Marathon kicking off this Sunday, Reactions runs through the science of distance running: why muscles burn, how sweat cools the body and the chemistry of runner's high.

I started running during covid started I wasn't trying to stay home.. I was at 315 pounds.. running was hard I couldn't even do a mile. I would get tired by every block.. it was hell. I kept pushing and now I weight 155 pounds I am 6 feet tall and I can do 4 miles without stopping.. sometimes I push it for more at times I can do 5 miles. In under 45 mins. I love fucking running. It's amazing..
I always hit the wall when I run to the bathroom with the lights off.

I ran my first marathon on Sunday in Franktfurt and i can recommend it to anyone. The feeling when you cross the finish line is incredible, its way better than pot and just lets you feel amazing! PS.: Avoid stairways the day afterwards ^^

A lady at the gym sells ketone drink on the side that she said stimulate ketosis, I don't know the name sorry. when u r long distance running and hit the wall could a ketone drink speed up the transition or shorten time until "get over the wall"?
I ran 20 miles outside last december just for the hell of it. I did experience a runners high, which is basically just an extreme feeling of relaxation.

Thanks for understanding of how and why O2 affect glycogen breakdown. Training for my first official marathon right now. My "wall" when much younger was around 13-14 miles in. After that hell was past, I could run forever.
New runner, just did 10K for the first time yesterday! 1 hr 4 min. Goal is to work up to a half marathon eventually. Biggest advice I could give, do not go too fast! Find your comfortable pace!! I’m doing a 9-10min per mile pace & that feels good but when I started I was doing 7 min & couldn’t last. It’s OK to go slower! 🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️

A runner for sure , but lately, more time on the couch 🛋, had a few issues plantar fasciitis , general ankle and knee issues 😬 ! Having said that , I did a 5.3km race on Saturday in around 30minutes
This route is from Bethesda MD to Georgetown DC. My favorite biking route.
I've ran about over 100 half and full marathons. Yes, I'm addicted to running. It not only keeps you healthy, it's any easy sport to access. All you need are a good pair of running shoes and some running clothes, and you're good to go. Whether you are running for 15 minutes or 2 hours, you can just go by a near by park or run around your neighborhood. It's just so convenient.
Great video!
Distance runner (marathon at 16) and chemistry nerd! Nice channel.
Can you simply mix some kitchen salt in your drink used while running (I for example simply take water mixed with a bit of fruit sirup to keep med going) or does it have to be the mix of salts in an energy drink?

iam a mid distance runner, 5k-10k, mostly because i have to do do strength training and hiit Training just after running. I would love if you post a video on science behind MMA FIGHTS, because it involves almost all muscles and both aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
I’m a runner! Used to be a couch potato. Actually mystic messenger got me running thanks to Zen always talking about his workouts. It motivated me!
Studies also show that carb loading needs to be preceded by a week of not eating carbs, just like taking caffeine helps if you haven't taken any for a week as well.
In training for my second marathon on March 19! \^-^/
Great video runners
So I used to run, but I haven't run in over a year and I've gained a bunch of weight since I stopped. Have any of you done this and been able to get back into it? Was it hard or easy? What motivated you to get back into it?

Well that's my problem I never run 20 miles in one day
How do I overcome pre-game anxiety? My long distance running always suffers when my nerves go crazy.
interesting, so what happens after running a long distance when in the ketonic state? is it possible to top up on fat and protein rather than carbs to keep going or is that something the human body doesn't agree with or isn't designed for? Also, how long could you could go without cars just in general life?
All of the above
So what training do I need to do to run a 20 mile run in 3ish weeks. I’ve always done distance running but never 20 miles 🥵😳. Please give advice.
I love my running :D
Good video I’m doing my first half marathon at thirteen
I'm sorry but elite marathon runners are the ultimate athlete. Holding a 4:40 (sometimes lower) mile for over 26 miles?! I mean most people can't hold that pace for half a mile

Can you avoid bonking altogether by taking energy gels during the run. Let's say 5 or 6 during a marathon?
@dsrnotverycashmoney1796
4 жыл бұрын
During a marathon the body starts running low on glucose about 1 hour in, after 1 hour you should try to take an energy gel or bar every 30-45 minutes in order to replenish glucose stores, this also keeps your stomach working stopping you from throwing up.
Runner. Working on the distance part.

@2:22 the Ketones molecule doesn't have a ketone functional group. It only contains an ester and alcohol. Can someone explain what I'm missing?

A carbonyl group fits the discription too. I can't say I'm sure, but I think the carbon atom on the R' side makes it count as a keton ^^

Good catch the structure is actually an ester. Thanks for finding that. The "Ketone bodies" that are produced are quite confusing due to their metabolites but the main ketones produced are Acetone and Acetoacetate.

How do you guys feel about ketosis diets in relation to this? Doesn't forcing your body into a state of ketosis mean that you're already starting your race past 'the wall'? I bet that would mean terrible endurance.

Well, it depends how careful you are. Usually it happens sooner in urban than in rural areas. But then again, cycling through countryside, you may hit a fence.
Good information, I usually just drink a bottle of water, or Gatorade, and eat a pickle and I'm good to go.

OUET!
800 and 4x400 college athlete. Hey someone has to do those events.
You underestimated the fat burning. It does not start when glycogen finishes, it starts ong before that. What is more, elite athletes try to train their bodies to start burning fat sooner in the race in order to have that source of energy from as soon as possible (fats are really aloric, they give much more energy than glucose).
Alternate between water & Gatorade.
I'm more into long distance walking and dancing
Great marathon runners don't eat pasta, they consume anti-inflammatory foods. Most pasta, unless whole grain only causes your blood sugar levels to spike, causing inflammation. It's better to consume greens, vegetables etc.
