I love the quote given! "If you got a stable relationship or do great at work, you are going to feel pretty good. It is thought that those who do not have stimulations of their reward pathways through social environments or interactions are more likely to seek out addictive activities as a way to stimulate their own neglected reward pathways."
As a person in addiction recovery I can tell you this is 100% correct!

@know Nothing Well I've struggled with addiction myself for roughly 13 years so it would be more like me making a light hearted joke about cancer when I have cancer. Trust me, I know how destroying addiction can be and of course it's a serious subject, but if we can't find a little light heartedness in our most dark and difficult times then in my eyes that's a pretty miserable life to lead. It wasn't my intention to cause offence so I apologise if I have.

I was addicted then I stopped taking pills and overnight stopped being an addict. Addicts choose to be addict. I chose to be an alcoholic and an addict. One day I decided to stop and stopped. That's all that it is.
Addiction is no joke...it destroys families and society
First off. The entire form and display of the content is 🔥🔥! Great production. Secondly. I was SOOOO Liberating when I discovered that Addiction was NOT a moral issue and TRULY a Brain issue. After using and behaving in certain patterns for some time the brain is RECONSTRUCTED 🤯 Although addicts should be held accountable unto Recovery. I believe that just sharing these truths would be very helpful to society. Great content...

This was very enjoyable it definitely opened my eyes to things that I thought I knew and didn't completely know I know the dopamine is something our brain needs to allow happiness or to get to a euphoric State of mind using all these big words not very good with all that stuff but I do know what they mean being addicted isn't morally a bad thing it's just an issue in your brain that after using for however long it causes you to behave in certain patterns that aren't acceptable your brain can be reconstructed different amounts of times for different people no one wants to be an addict no one knows that they're going to be come a full-blown addict at an early age I would say that people try their best to not let themselves become addicts 50% are genetically reasons that people become addicts, other reasons may be the upbringing from child to through adolescence to adults things that may have occurred in their life painful traumatic misunderstood abuse whether it be emotional mental physical or sexual some will say they handle it better than others but at the end of the day any of the above is hard for anyone to go through especially from a young age all through till they become an adults soon you will see patterns we can begin to occur and it's extremely difficult to break those patterns or turn them into a positive way to live or deal with the pain that they have gone through since they were old enough to know what was happening

I try as much as possible to relate to young people because sometimes they have an easier rapport with someone only a few years older than them rather twice their age especially if they have gone through with that particular person is now going through and they will open their minds and their hearts and their souls to that person that does not put them down or hold them accountable for mistakes they have made through addiction
The social determinants of health- very powerful, life moulding- and therefore directly impactful on communities and societies!
I think the moral quandary isn't from addiction itself but how we should deal with people with addiction. It is very hard to write about, as I've already restarted this comment 3 times and I just gave up at this point.
I learned so much! This video explains such a complex process in easy to understand manner. Well done!
This video needs more views.
Videos like this are helpful..they need more videos like this. I was raised around addicts.. So I have as much understanding as I can of addicts if not being one myself. My boyfriend is in a recovery unit as I'm typing this. Behaviors of addicts is easy to understand for me, but something's I can't understand because I've never used. So explaining what parts of the brain are affected by drug use and the part they play in what they do really helps me understand his addiction better.
Favorite video so far, I can relate to everything said
Thank you. I'm dealing with someone in my circle I'm worried about and I dont know what to do but to at least understand.
Addiction is bad. It makes you make choices without reason and shapes your life & identity without your conscious input. It costs you precious time. It's difficult to get your life back from it. I hope everyone out there suffering from this heals.

Yes I just wanted to say this is one of the best videos I have ever watched give me a lot of knowledge on what causes addiction I could definitely understand why I ended up being an addict a lot of the same reasons they mentioned are a lot of the same reasons that I became an addict I I thought all these years that it was my fault you know I I should have made different choices try continuously to stay clean I've had periods of time where I did stay clean especially when I became pregnant at 19 I would no way shape or form ever consider doing a drug with a baby growing inside of me I have an easier time staying clean or doing things for other people especially if I I have love for them when I love I love wholeheartedly and I would never in a million years I don't care how good the drug was put my infant at risk for any thing I wouldn't even consider it I'm not putting down those who did I'm sure they have some crazy reason why they couldn't stop in my case I only just began I tried marijuana the first time I think I was 18 I didn't need drugs at that point I was just me you know other things were important to me I never even thought that I fall in love that early but yet I was in love with my first husband like there was no tomorrow I worship the ground he walked on and I I wanted to do everything he did I related to doing drugs as a way of being cool I was always not cool I went to Catholic School from first grade through 6th grade and I can't say that I wasn't boy crazy because I was but I was a tomboy I enjoyed being friends with the boys I enjoyed that I could hang with the boys but I never thought of it in any other way than just hanging with the boys I always wanted to prove myself that I was strong enough to do that I had it in me and then I ended up getting hurt a lot physically you know broken noses and riding my dirt bike I got hurt all the time but I never let it show you never let them see you sweat I I moved from New Brunswick to Monroe township and it was a whole different atmosphere it was country and I didn't even know what the style of clothing was at that point I like I said I went to Catholic School and I I wore a uniform I hated it so as soon as we moved I had to get all kinds of magazines and try to figure out what the girls my age were wearing and and I did and I went from being this Catholic school girl boy crazy as a tomboy and 6th grade halfway through I became boy crazy and another way my first real boyfriend was 7th grade in eighth grade was my husband's of course we were married yet but I had the biggest crush on him and he was older than I and I just thought wow you know he likes me so I ended up getting pregnant back to the situation that we're speaking of yes once I realized sex felt good and he of course taught me everything although there was not much left that I needed to learn because I was molested from the time I was four I didn't want to share with that with him at first I was embarrassed but I did learn that the love that you have for a boy, young man was a whole lot different than the love you have for a child's growing inside of you I didn't even have to think twice about using while I was pregnant although I knew a lot of girls who did I had just started experimenting with cocaine snorting it and in the '80s quickly and quickly went from snorting it to smoking it as an even today I run into my ex-husband my first husband and he'll apologize to me for turning me into a drug addict he didn't turn me into a drug addict obviously that was my fate and I thought being a drug addict was cool I thought that being the one who knew where to get the drugs was cool I thought the one that had the drugs was cool all the wrong reasons but my son was more important to me than getting high I can't even tell you how many times I've gotten high because I it wasn't about the getting high I mean I wanted to get out of my own head and the pain that I had gone through as a child and a young woman and at 17 finding out that father I grew up with was really only my stepfather and his father being my step grandfather they knew that I wasn't biologically theirs but I didn't know that so I carried that guilt around with me for a very long time all through my junior high in high school and then like I said at 17 I found out that I wasn't biologically there's and I felt very betrayed and the people that knew I wish they would have either have never told me at all or they would have told me a lot sooner thank God for my cousins they were always trying to protect me as well as could be expected we were all around the same age I took it upon myself to take the pain away from them of course their lives are doing well and I'm happy for them and I'm still trying to patch, My life together again a lot of prayers, a lot of love innocent love between my children and myself I can't say that any of my relationships with men helped any because they just made it worse I always had to pick out the bad boys and they stay true to their name........ There will be more to come thank you

Awesome, this video is very helpful!
I don't think genetics has anything to do with it, but it is part of a larger story that we've been told to tell ourselves💙
The way I look at the genetic factor is the amount of self-respect and willpower your genes contain.
Thank you

Nice video. Subscribed :D
Interesting how the brain changes as a result of addiction. Is that permanent? How does the brain change or function for people trying to stop additions or have stopped for a while? What can these brain changes tell us that could help or hinder those recovering from addiction? My reading of the video is that addicts seeking healthy activities that stimulate the reward functions would be important to replace the addiction reward, while strengthening the positive feedback for a more balanced reward system. Is that correct?

Its surprising just how much a brain can heal and change after addiction and damage. Healthy fats, nutrition and omega 3's help loads. Simply being sober, with time, allows the brain to heal and adjust.

I’m struggling too! Just know you aren’t alone. You’re never alone.
After the part listing ESCAPING DANGER as a source of a DOPAMINE RUSH, I decided to seek the dopamine rush from escaping the danger of my addiction, so when I am surrounded by party people drinking, or when offered a drink, when watching TV and alcohol is promoted, I reject it with such determination that I get the dopamine from escaping danger.
People in a situation they shouldn't be in often try to escape through drugs/alcohol to numb themselves.. instead of leaving. I've quit alcohol/nicotine/illegal drugs Still have binge eating issues & spending the binge eating is connected to stress levels
Once I breathe and now im addicted to breathing.
Excellent explanation. Can you provide a solution?
hey! Can you let us know what music you used in the background of this video? I love the song at 7 minutes :)
mashAllah thanks bro!
Please make a video on Binge Eating Disorder... Please do.
So, is there a link between addiction and memory loss?
I'm a couple of minutes in.. Is there any actual talk on the psychology/ spiritual side (ie the truth) of addiction or does it just go on moronically the way it started ?
How long does a person have to remain abstinent for dopamine to return to normal levels so that they can function normally?
Pulling chin hairs, need help bad, can't find it! 12 steps not working. Doesn't matter how many steps I take. Rehab, Prison, Hospitals. Mr. lost and hopless here can't I stop using and losing. I'm just tired of suffering 😪
Interesting... so addiction to pain killers is a double whamy. D Good deep relaxation with therapeutic, clinical hypnosis tracks makes an amazing difference and can help to not engage in the addiction.
Very informative! Thank you so much for sharing this. A very good source of information to be able to make people easily understand the mechanism behind addiction esp. to the youth. God bless you more abundantly...❤️

What about DNA methylation? Addiction is a broad term covering several territories of discussion but if you are going to get into drug addiction it is very misleading to only discuss dopamine and the reward center aspect. Drug addict treatments are based on this incomplete information which is why they are almost completely ineffective. Only 5 percent of people go to treatment facilities and never return so obviously something is very wrong here. I cannot cover the missing information lacking from this video in a single comment but the FDA really messed up with oxycontin and would love it if you watched this and accepted this as explanation to the opioid crisis in America.
Thank you for having good production value in your videos and also being British. All these American university vids abt brain chemistry and addiction are making me wanna die. So thank u. I’m American btw

i only feel the need to use drugs, specifically opioids. when i'm left alone. no one cares to talk to me. so i isolate and do drugs.

I want to ask is there anyone else out there like myself, I never seem to get addicted to anything I took a lot of pills and cocaine in my early 20s and smoked weed like on a daily basis with the lads then got to 25 and was like oh i better stop im getting old, so i just quit doing it all. I work as a carpenter joiner and once was on this 8 month job where my forman was a complete w**k stain so i took up smoking to get away from him a few minutes of the day. I was pumping the cigarettes for about a year after that 20 a day id say, then i was running low on money so i stopped buying them and just never thought about them from there after, I love coffee in the morning but most morning I forget to make one but i dont go on like GOD I NEED MY COFFEE I can take it or leave it. Ive had several periods in my 30 year life of excessive drinking, J1 to California 2012 drank and partied everyday for 3 months, Australia i drank most days for a year 2014 and up untill 3 months ago I was drinking every day since Covid began out of bordom, each time i decided to quit it wasnt hard i felt fine and i didn't or dont miss it, even now if i wanted to drink i would but it wouldn't mean im back on the wagon i just seem to switch it on or off. I dont want or mean to offend anyone with this comment i understand addiction is a real thing and a struggle and hardship of anyone who suffers from it, I would just like to know is there anyone who has had similar experiences as myself
