The Science and Power of Hope | Chan Hellman | TEDxOklahomaCity

A lot of people want to change their lives, but they are not quite sure how. They think of hope as a magic wish, or an ideal that is out of reach. In this talk, Dr. Chan Hellman shares there is both science and power in hope to help people create the change they want in life.
Chan M. Hellman is a professor of social work at the University of Oklahoma and Director of The Hope Research Center. He has written more than 150 scientific publications and has presented at numerous national and international conferences worldwide. Chan’s research is focused on hope as a psychological strength helping children and adults overcome trauma and adversity. Chan is the co-author of the award-winning book “Hope Rising: How the Science of Hope Can Change Your Life” with his co-author Casey Gwinn published by Morgan James.

This presentation was intentional FOR ME ‘TODAY’ …..I didn’t select it… It popped up…this SPOKE volumes played it several times. I’m compelled this moment to write notes and repeat till it sinks into my thinking, to follow and comprehend this concept of ‘HOPE’. I know the agony of hopelessness… This gentleman speaks from experience, is gentle and proofs success. Note: It will be very difficult but I will attempt to RESET my stagnant present thoughts. Thank you for popping up today and pray others can be as affected as I’m today. THANK YOU

I dont feel hopeless but other people do and it's all in the mindset. It's about making solutions to give you pure hope because you're doing something to progress in your life step by step. I recently failed a major test by 1 point and will power to drive 3+ hours to take it again drained me but I'm still making steps to try and take it again because of hope. Most of those kinds of people were blessed to live under parents who instilled strong work ethic, confidence, and self belief in them as children. They were guided to become the best version of themselves. I wish that was the case for everyone in the world but sadly a lot of that stuff is hidden from the everyday person so they don’t get to that level but we are all capable of achieving anything we want. You can do anything you want. My favorite quote is “What one man can do, another can do” Start listening to Tony Robbins everyday. It’s mindset first and it’s the most important. Tony Robbins helped me to achieve success in certain areas of my life and you can do it to.

I truly believe a better future will only be achieved if we continue the cycle of evolution, which requires destruction and rebuild, death and birth. Any effort to change anything or improve anything may bring comfort in short term, but is pointless in long term, and too much effort always make things worse. So I don't have a goal. I don't believe we can make better future through personal impassion. The only thing I value is connections. Connect to family, connect to friends, connect to future generation. The only hope I have is that human will not extinct when I die, the connections will continue, and my existence will be implanted in this connection network for eternity, just like our brain cells will aways be a part of our soul even though this single brain cell haven been died for decades. My hope come from the belief of immortality. The only way that I could lose hope is if everyone that knows me and will kown me all dies together. To avoid that, I'm taking actions, and that's what keeps me going

Although I am myself an optimistic person. I have to disagree with the second part of the definition of Hope. We do not have the power to change everything that we hope for. A good example is when some family member is dying you could be the most optimistic person in the world and hope that that person gets better, and yet is undeniable that the person may die despite how hopeful you are.
