when i was living with my aunt to help out (she had stage iv colon cancer), she would call me out of school if she felt super sick, after chemo treatment, or if i just needed a break. one of the receptionists actually asked if i’d come down with “what my aunt had”, and i remember sitting at the kitchen table hearing her say, “no, he definitely didn’t catch cancer”.

God, no! That’s horrible. I used to accompany my mom to her chemo treatment because she was getting weaker. She had no one and I used to take hours out of work for that. At the time, my manager was fine but my coworkers were just gossiping about me going shopping or in cafe avoiding work; all having fun. I mean, I’d happily work if you’ll take my mom’s cancer? Once, I dared to get a Starbucks as I was so tired, lacking sleep and the stall was in the hospital. I was chewed alive. My boss had to question me about it!! I hated that working place. I actually told my boss that I am fine reducing working hours because I have my mum as my priority and she get so tired and sick, she can’t walk or balance herself. I can’t just leave her in the house alone .. it’s dangerous. Not to mention, she throws up a lot and would be so weak and down after it all. She used to cry a lot during that time. I moved her in with me and I remember when I discovered it. She’d wake in the middle of the night and just cry because she wet herself or couldn’t even leave bed and didn’t want to call for me. It breaks my heart that some people have no dignity and compassion. I was an adult and it hurts me a lot. Can’t imagine how it felt for you when you were much much younger and to have kids your age say it is expected but an adult? God. How awful

I started calling myself in sick once I got to senior years and very very quickly understood why my mom hated doing it. They were rude af. I should be grateful though, they taught me to stop giving a shit and not take their crap. A quick "I'm off sick today, nope, it's none of your business, I'll be back when i'm back" is really all that's needed.

School receptionists also get cussed out pretty much every day and have parents there as ten physical harm. They have to deal with parents threatening to attack other children. They have e to explain that they are not food delivery services. They have to stop guardians without custody from taking children. They have to deal with medical emergencies. They have to call parents who forget about their young children. They have to calm down and figure out what to do with parents that show up to schoool drunk or high. They have to separate parents who come in about an issue regarding their child and then get violent/confrontational with each other….. And the list goes on. Their just b is harder/more complex than y’all realize!

@@GizmoGremlinDog I agree that they should be professional. I also think that people come to them with an attitude-and sometimes feel as if they are experiencing one in return, even if that isn’t happening. Or the most common one I have seen my friends experience-they are following school policy ( which they have no part in creating) and the parents are incredibly rude to them-so the secretary responds with firmness and the parents complain about the secretary. So, to me, many of the negative “attitudes” ( including patronizing ones) that parents feel they experience from school secretaries come from the parents’ own behavior and attitudes. I have even seen secretaries be full on sweet and apologetic to parents-while parents walk out calling them rude and such. As a teacher, it is hard to see the way that they are treated by parents. Many parents would NEVER treat me that way-and I think it is because secretaries tend to have less education-so parents just respect them less. Not cool.

The school office workers knew my mom's phone number by heart and the moment they saw it they were already writing that one of us would be absent. We had very weak immune systems as kids so bad that every other week it was always something. We got sent to school several times while sick but the teachers would notice and move us to another room entirely if we could be contagious. We only got sent because of the laws surrounding absence. My principal was so familiar with me that she had a cot in her office for me because it was always a 70% chance I'd need it from either passing out or being in pain from sickness. Bless them because it took me getting horribly ill and a surgery to get my immune system fixed.

He asked me when I was coming back to work and said "Just because the doctor signed you off, that doesn't mean you can't come to work." Yes. Yes, it does mean that, in fact. It means that I am not fit to work, and I've literally just had abdominal surgery and I can't even sit up right now without being in agony. Do you really think I should be travelling 1.5 - 2.5 hours each way to work on public transport, walk a mile at one end and half a mile at the other end, and also do a full work day in between while I am like that? No. That's not how it works.

Not only did she suggest that my kid was faking, she also told me "parents really shouldn't make false reports" I had issues with this woman for a few years due to her rudeness and this was the final straw. I drove to the school and met the school resource officer at the door. I explained what happened and that I had the note from the Dr saying my kid is to stay home. He walked me to the receptionist's desk to have her make a copy. Cue petty revenge, I asked for a copy of each and every policy of the entire district. I then asked for a copy of the dress codes and code of ethics. By the time she was finished 1½ hours later the stack of papers was thicker than a 90's phone book. I smiled and said thank you, I dropped all the copies, all of it, in the trash can by the door and left.

It is heavily critical to state parents must tell the school before 8am. It is almost an hour before normal registration time at school. The deadline set at 8:45 would be ideal for parents with sick children.

Not every parent knows their child won't be able to come that early. Having a chronic illness (a pain and immune disorder), we tried to wait until the latest possible time just in case I could rally to go to school. Not every child is trying to get out of something. Every time I went to the nurse with a MEDICALLY DIAGNOSED MIGRAINE, the nurse would roll her eyes, take my temperature, and ask if I wanted to call my mom. Then she'd take the phone and be like "yeaahhh, so they did just come from PE, is what they told me.. so.." I had meds in the office too, but I always limited myself on how many I took because insurance only covered 9 a month. I had 3 for my mom's, 3 for my dad's, and 3 for school. This nurse ended up retiring my junior year of high school, and her replacement was SO nice. She gave me advice on easing the pain, let me borrow an ice pack, and said as long as she sees a text from mom, I can go home if I needed.

I have memories of my mum launching herself over the phone in a protective manner at the rather rude receptionists questioning my health. I was often sick a lot (I’m now 36, & I’ve been diagnosed with 2 chronic genetic health conditions which come with a whole host of health issues, so of course looking back on my younger years it’s like slotting the puzzle pieces together). I had some nice receptionists, but some were incredibly rude & if you knew my mum.. she took no prisoners, very old school & called a spade a spade lol (I was the last of 4 kids, she was 40 & my dad was 41 when I was born, my eldest sibling is nearly 17 years my senior! So I was a surprise, & the only girl lol) - I lost my mum suddenly in January. This made me smile remembering how embarrassed I was over those phone calls but as an adult, I completely respected what she did for me back then (& I’d do exactly the same for my kids had I been blessed).
