The Scariest Thing ALL Ebikers Face (...no, it's not battery fires)

Do you know what it is guys? It's not battery fires.
I'm personally not afraid of battery fires, sure they are a possibility (anything is possible) but the probability is very low. If you just do an average ratio of how many ebike batteries are sold vs how many ebike battery fires there are that percentage is going to be extremely low. If you're in an ebike community, just ask around and you may find a few of your friends that have had a fire, but the vast majority will have not. I already made a video on ebike fires, but today we're talking about the elephant in the room:
eBike Theft.
This really is the scariest thing in ebike ownership. Oh, you don't believe me? I asked reddit myself and this was the response: as you can clearly see bike theft is far out in front, and to my surprise the second scariest thing was being hit by a car, while ebike fires came in third.
To me, getting your bike stolen is something that is much more likely to happen to you, happens far more often than battery fires could ever, and will continue to happen regardless of technological advancements (unlike battery fires as batteries will continue to get safer as battery tech improves). So what are some things you can do to protect your ebike from theives?
The sad truth is that the only absolute way you can ever guarantee that your ebike won't get stolen is to, well, just not have an ebike. That's it guys, it's really the only way, if you still want to have an ebike then everything else is going to be varying levels of assumed risk and ratios of probability.
Beyond just complete abstinence from ebiking, the number one action you can take to protect your bike is: location. Not only where you are parking your bike but how long, and also at which intervals. I was going to put this as number two on the list, but honestly it beats out a bike lock. If you can store your bike securely enough then you don't even need a lock (although stacking these methods is even better).
So if you can't get the best location and you must park your bike outside in public what can you do? The best defense in this scenario is a bike lock, or even better multiple bike locks. It should be said that how much you spend on locking your bike should parallel how much your bike costs, if you have a cheap bike, it's more okay to go with a cheaper lock, but if your bike costs a lot, you should be spending a lot on bike locks choosing the best and most proven to be effective. There are many types and styles of bike locks out there and most of them favor convenience, these are the ones that you want to avoid.
If you guys know of any other things that could help secure your bike, put them down in the comments. The moral of the story is that predators are out there, and they want your bike. I'm actually waiting for the stories of ebikes being stolen while someone is riding it through use of intimidation of force, almost like a grand theft ebike scenario. I know that as more and more people are choosing ebikes as an alternative to cars, and the price of ebikes keep going up, it's only a matter of time.
Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next one.

I agree 100% After spending so much time building my bike.. I would rather get hit or eat it. Put an alarm on it.. locking it. Bring my bike to the garden center at Wally world. Always make trips where I can stay on it.. Or very close to it.. and in eye sight.. I park right in front of a camera at Wally world with my every day work ebike.. Not to worried about that one..

@@darrenhobson2244 Thanks man, I appreciate it! The sad truth that I tried to express in the video too is that really the only way to make it not happen is to not have an ebike, because if someone wants it then most likely they will get it, might even threaten you violently to take it, so it's just unfortunate that it's like this now. I am with you in taking things in your own hands, but just be weary that this can backfire sometimes too, you go to get your bike back and they are there with a whole posse toting knives or guns, so I feel you on the sentiment, just be careful too man. A lot of people are willing to risk their life over even a few hundred dollars, and it's just not worth it at some point.

Great tips. I have 5 ebikes and i only leave my cheap one unattended, but it has a loud alarm that i can hear from wherever i leave it and a convenient lock and air tag. I would never leave one of my expensive ebikes unattended. It would suck if someone broke into my home over it but i don't think thats too likely. Im think about getting a real gps tracker instead of using airtags and tiles, but they are bulkey and harder to hide

Thank you, yes I agree. I feel the same way, I would only leave an ebike that I wouldn't be "too" upset to have stolen, and of my very expensive "nice" ones, I would not leave out in public. GPS is a good idea, but it can be hard to get the police to help after the fact, even with a known location, so it's still risky. I wish you safety for all your bikes and hopefully for the future we can have a society that collaborates instead of steals from one another. 🍻

Do some of the ebike motors have a locking mechanism? For example if you try to pedal but the wheels won't turn... That's a good way to stop from someone from riding off. Of course if someone had a car and put the bike in the car that's a different story.

I had a controller fire happen while I was on trails. I didn't know it was the controller at the time as both battery and controller were inside and I didn't have any tools to open it up. the possibility of setting the forest on fire as well as having no way to get back home is pretty high on my stress list. I don't worry as much about my bike being stolen as it's huge and I pull out the key if I walk more than 10 feet away. I don't think people would get very far without a ramp, a truck bed, and a lot of grunting. We have a lot of hit-and-runs here so that's pretty high on my list. But getting hit with my daughter onboard is the worst fear. everything else I can walk away from.

  • @hightech-lowlife

That sucks man, I've never heard of a controller fire, but any of the components are susceptible to fire for sure. An out of control battery fire in a wooded environment with a lot of dry brush around could be a disaster 100% good thing you were able to contain it. I totally agree, depending on your area one of these scary things is going to be more prevalent, if your bike is heavy enough it will make it harder to steal. I ride a motorcycle too and I treat everyone on the road as if they're trying to kill me, so being hyper vigilant and awareness is about all you can do and hope for the best. I wish you safety on your rides and I appreciate your feedback and input! Thanks!

I keep having crazy dreams about my bike being stolen or I find it in multiple pieces from a thief attempting to steal mine. You are right, I don’t even worry about a battery fire as much as I worry about my bike being stolen. I recently installed an alarm on mine which locks up the hub and sounds an alarm after being moved twice. I also use a TiGr lock which I thought was not pickable but I have seen the locksmith lawyer pick the lock in under a minute haha 😂 nothing is safe these days!

For sure man! I think the alarm is a good idea, any ways that you can stack deterrents is better than just one 👍Most people do not have the skills of LPL, but yes sadly locks are quite easy to bypass these days with modern picking tools, which is why it's always best to have multiple layers to deter thieves, and also making good choices like not leaving your bike in a place where it is more vulnerable, etc. I'm hoping our world will eventually change where people don't need to steal and we have an abundance of all the things we need and want to where we can collaborate and give more than take from one another. Maybe someday 🍻in the meantime good luck out there man!

@@chikararexzpo Yeah do it when you feel like it, I'm sure others would like to see your bike! (including me 👍) I go to hardware stores all the time for things, it would be nice to have a discount as I build stuff all the time. I'm kind of the same way, my work has been very busy and hectic lately, so having time to make videos and work on projects is harder, but I'm still trying to do it. Thanks man!

The blatant theft today is ridiculous and the only measure is to put a GPS tracker in your bike and get a whole load of ya mates to go vigilanty on their ass!!!

For real man! I only see this getting worse too sadly, the greater the divide between rich and poor (no more middle class, etc) this is only going to get worse as people need to do more and more drastic things just to get by. I really do think people are going to start going that route more and more because you can't rely on the police to help in a timely manner (or at all in some cases). Thanks man!

Dont leave it out over night. bring battery in store. get an Abus 3ft chain and an ABUS 20/70 Diskus disc lock. Add alarm. maybe add apple gps tracker hidden on bike.

ah, at the end of the video, yea, I just bought similar, but most likely that u-lock you got can be picket easliy. the ABUS 20/70 Diskus cannot.

Giant chain is good for intimidation, they'd rather go after an easier target. I think almost all locks can be picked quite easily, if you have faith in the Diskus, we should send it to the LPL 👍

@@hightech-lowlife the chain isnt giant, its a 3 footer - guard security on amazon. I was first going to get the Abus 2 ft chain, but my disc lock wouldnt fit in the link, plus it was short. they both are hard to cut with basic bolt cutters, and even then have to be cut twice

@@One_-_Man-_-Clan Ah, yeah I feel like that dude has picked like almost every major lock in existence, although to be fair most designs are just copies of one another. It's pricey, but worth it. I do think that most attackers are not going to bother with a pick though, just go straight for the cordless angle grinder, or sawzall.

@@One_-_Man-_-Clan Yeah my chain is most likely pretty weak because it wasn't that expensive, I'm sure it wouldn't take that long with a grinder. Bolt cutters may take a bit longer, but still if someone is determined, they're gonna get through any defenses. I still think it's best to stack defenses and make it annoying as hell to release what they want.
