And maybe it is also a visual illustration of despair (the feeling, not of the Endless), snagging, scaring a person. You know how you feel despair, hopelessness or fear, you have chills up your spine, or a dropping knot in your stomach, or all those other unpleasant feelings? That could be Despair's hook, taking away from your original self and scaring you. Just a thought.

"Take away the despair and there is nothing left. Nothing but an empty room, and a hook of the perfect shape and size for snagging your heart." The hook is a representation of Despair purpose in the universe - to sow the despair yes, but not without reason, despite what Despair may think - it is being spread, so people can overcome it. So they can see the meaning to the madness of their own suffering, and from the recognition of it, gain Hope. Without despair, without recognition of own misery, one can never start hoping for anything more. Thus, without Despair, all suffering is meaningless - a hook, cutting flesh for no reason.

@@Drakhesh That is literally the very reason why Despair indirectly created Superman. She was the one who convinced Krypton’s star to create life on an unstable planet. Just so the planet could die and just one life would survive. Escaping to become the very embodiment of Hope itself.

I love how all the other siblings have an otherworldly quality to them, but Despair just looks like someone in a deep state of depression. That's perfect!

"Her voice is little more than a whisper". The actor really got Despair's character right, even if she's here sad and somber rather than the kind of animalistic Despair we see in the graphic novel.

The fact that despair wears crocs bumps this show up a notch, and it was already real high

The voices of Morpheus, Desire and Despair are so calm, I could listen them for hours.

Meaning Desire could have tried to come through to Despair’s dominion without permission when Despair answered the summons, but instead chooses not to, and invites Despair in to Desire’s dominion. They are both so old, and have been together so long, I’m certain their relationship is still complicated. But they clearly trust each other, and the ways they _choose_ to be kind to each other, not out of requirement but choice, are highlighted by the contrast of Desire and Dream’s relationship. The Endless don’t all have to be nice to each other. So we see how it means more when they are.

After watching the show I'm actually pretty excited to see who they cast as Delirium, I hope we get to see her next season!

Never heard of Mason before. I won't forget them now!! Brilliant, just brilliant acting!! Donna is great too by the way.

I love how Dispair's appearance embodies someone who has given up on themselves and life right down to how tired her face is, a perfect depiction of her concept.

If they decide to adapt the Emperor Norton story (which seems to be one of the top waiting list for comic readers), it will be an interesting challenge for Despair's actress, because it's one time we see Despair that's closest to NOT moping, even dare I say, pure 'playful' sibling rivalry.

@@lexysraymont9627 Well it was never revealed if Dream ever visited Krypton, but he and his siblings must have knowledge of many worlds in Universe so he must know Krypton and also many Kryptonians must have go to the Dreaming during sleep, before all of them died.

@@lexysraymont9627 Spoilers they were, in “The Wake” u can see Darkseid, Superman and Batman in the dreaming attending Morpheus’s funeral, and in the early issues Morpheus meets Constantine, Martian Manhunter and miracle man, in one of the issues Despair was talking to Rao Krypton’s god, and to note dream doesn’t visit every single planet as everyone who dreams visits him in the dreaming, he only visits planets if he have to.

Desire is fucking iconic that energy was like wow

Sometimes even getting too much of what you desire can lead to despair, if one considers many addictions, for instance.

I really hope to see more of the endless in the show especially desire, delirium, death and destiny.

@@arthursouza9641 Not fully, they do change a little, such as Johanna in place of John, Mervyn appearing earlier than he's meant too, and some other things that are removed or added. Desire isn't even meant to appear until Lucifer attacks to the Dreaming yet here their part was introduced far earlier.

I hope for s2 will bring in more of these 2, Death, and bring in the other endless. Destiny, Destruction, and Delirium (but also show what she used to b like as Delight). If Rose and Jed meet their great grandfather Desire, it won't b a pleasant family meeting as it (Desire uses the pronouns of they/them but also an og of "IT") was using Rose for Dream to kill so The Three (Fates) would kill him for familicide without knowing it.

@@bbobbytorres It would say it is ambiguous, actually. One thing that comes out later is that the Fates hate Dream, but are unable to touch him (unless he kills a family member). He also can summon them, though it costs a price. One thing that you always have to keep in mind with Gaiman's work is that multiple things can be true. There's a bit in the... I want to say second book, where the Fates appear in Destiny's garden to deliver a prophecy. Destiny is puzzled, so he consults his book to conclude that destiny requires that the Endless meet together. But as is pointed out by Desire, The Fates ARE destiny... but so is Destiny's garden, and Destiny's book, and Destiny himself. Elsewhere, it's stated that Dream's castle is the center of The Dreaming, and yet Fiddler's Green is also the heart of the Dreaming, and at another point Dream must TRAVEL to get to the heart of The Dreaming. And Matthew even comments on this, saying it makes no sense. But it's Gaiman. Everything is true, (unless Gaiman wants something not to be true for a moment), all gods are real, reality is mutuable. So. Are the Fates more powerful than the Endless? Yes. Are the Endless more powerful than the Fates? Also yes.

Could be that they wanted to make Desire a less likeable character to the audience. An American accent on a antagonistic character does tend to increase animosity to them from a western audience. Like Gaiman’s other TV series, Lucifer, Tom Ellis has stated that he originally used an American accent for Lucifer but he came across as as a huge A-Hole. When he switched to an English accent, Lucifer was still a huge A-Hole, but most people were sympathetic to the character.

@@darrenhemingway7121 Difference is that Neil Gaiman’s Lucifer is *supposed* to be a massive A-Hole and isn’t supposed to be sympathetic. It’s one of the reasons why that show is hated so much by Sandman fans and why Gwendoline’s version is so much more accurate to the DC comic book.

@@thomaskilroy4573 if you are going to spend millions of dollars on a new tv series of a comic book with a arguably limited fan base, investors will want a sympathetic lynchpin main character, so it can be sold to a wider audience. Morpheus easily fills this role for Sandman, but I cannot imagine that Christie’s version of lucifer would engender the same wider audience. At least until a few series of Sandman has come to pass.

Desire's outfit here is giving David Bowie vibes. I wouldn't blame Unity if they looked like that

I always thought it would be intriguing if despair came and visited hob when Sandman was captured and she would fall in love with him and it would give her a realization that though she brings despair she can also take it away I don't know that's just my thought

He is such enigmatic character. You never know what is his full plan.

I can only think "Thank god we didn't get that naked gray woman from the comics." This is a very satisfying compromise in appearance.

Wonder what kind of tenants inhabit Despair's realm the way Cain and Abel inhabit the dreaming. Maybe Arwen Undomiel who got lost in the woods at some point while pining away and diminishing after Aragorn's death ? Or Moaning Myrtle after sulking away in the Hogwarts loo for too long ? Coincidentally I am wearing crocs as I write this.

I'm not sure anyone does, actually. Dream is the only Endless shown to have inhabitants in his realm, and that's largely just because Dream wants people in his realm and creates them to populate the Dreaming.

I wished the cloth-wearing Despair was bit more miserable-looking - she looking too cozy, warm & well-dressed in that outfit with only heathy hair compare to her comic book look of 1000 different levels of depression, dishevel & bloated while naked with yuck mouth teeth.

I am not. At all. Her nakedness made her seem far more serious than the others, somehow, more primal. All the others dressed for dinner at the beginning of Season of Mists. But not her. That was like she was saying "Yeah, dressing up. Games for children. I'm me, deal with it."

Kind of sucks how they turned Despair into little more than a depressed college girl with poor self-esteem. I pictured her more as a plodding creature, like Pyramid Head, pained grunts and moans punctuated by the occasional screech from the abyss.

Well, much much much much more. In fact don´t even compare in power scale.

Just a theory of mine.. during Lucifer and Morpheus' battle, when Morpheus asked Lucifer what could kill hope, Lucifer knows all too well that despair kills hope, but story-wise, Lucifer can't answer despair since she's part of the Endless. Idk but that's just me.

Despair wears crocs. Enough said.

I still don't understand how these feelings work. How do we know what we feel is our dream or our desire?

Desire is much more intense and at the moment than dream. That is the reason why some evil deeds stems back from desire because of its intensity; people tend to be irrational. While dream is subtle and gentle, it gives room for reassessments

The difference is subtil but important. Desire is like a longing, something that plays on your emotions, but ultimately you can say they are not what your innerself wants. They only speak to the greedy part of your mind. Dream is like Morpheus said, Hope. They are what a person truly wants inside, what they'd whish for their future. Dreams are more pure and revealing of the soul, while desires are revealing a current state of mind out of events of life. Desires are temptations, dreams are aspirations.

I don't agree at all. I think she's far more dignified in the comics. And I don't see that she was ever a sad sack in the comics. She was freaking scary in the comics.

Here after watching Dead Boy Detectives: apparently the two series are set in the same universe, i didn't know cause im not into DC or american comics in general. There's a Despair cameo in the new show 👍

her first question was about destruction, shes still hoping he would return even tho she is full of despair. theres a little bit of positivity in her atleast

@@lynxvex they are both really close accdg to the comics and before destruction left, despair was convincing him not to leave.

So i guess if the Despair and Desire decide to attack Dream his other siblings i hooe they will help him this time i think Death is enough to soil themselves.

Divine David just seems to get younger year after year.

I really think they missed the opportunity to play Annie Lennox's "No more I love you's" in this scene. It would've been divine. Ugh. No more I love you's The language is leaving me No more I love you's Changes are shifting outside the words (The lover speaks about the monsters) I used to have demons in my room at night Desire, despair, desire, so many monsters Oh, but now (I don't find myself bouncing around) (Whistling my conscience to make me cry).....*sigh*

Well, that was the intention. Because desire have to be sexy and creepy in same time.

Im curious to see if the other endless will have other names, like Dream is also known as Morpheus.

There's no way they could have gone the same route as the comics. Ever.

What I don't get is why Despair is so easily manipulated. As one of The Endless, you'd think she would have enough knowledge to know when she's being used.

I think Despair and Desire legitimately get along. Despair knows Desire is all about manipulation, but doesn’t mind, and Desire doesn’t manipulate Despair so much as just asking her to help out.
