The Endless - Absurd Humanoid Lovecraftian Gods That Are Embodiments Of Human Feeling & Life Cycles

Ойын-сауық

In Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Universe we meet a dysfunctional family of seven brothers and sisters who are known as the Endless. They certainly do not fit into the usual definition of family since they are the physical embodiments of natural concepts that are related to life. And as the name suggests, these concepts are endless and continue to go on whether you and I exist or not.
From oldest to youngest, the siblings that make up the Endless family are Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium, who was previously known as Delight. Each of the siblings has their own important role to play in the smooth functioning of mortal life. But where did they exactly come from? And why are they so important? These are some of the questions that we will answer in this video. So, without further delay, let us dive right in and explore the story of the Endless.

    How are they lovecraftian? They are cosmic, but not unfathomable or monstrous. They don't exactly exist in the stars either or explicitly emit horror. They are flesh and blood in a sense, they have feelings and emotions, we can understand their motives and relate to them. There is so little lovecraftian here it's an insult.

    @@mikestanmore2614 actually the Dreamlands are part of the Lovecraft Mythos. and it says several times in the series that although they might LOOK human, and to varying degrees relate to human..they AREN"T. not even close. Delerium once goes on a rant about how thier very presence in the material world WARPS it. Something along the lines that if one of them sees a bolt of lightning in the sky and takes notice of it, for CENTURIES afterwards mortals will occasionally see the ghost of that bolt of lightning. Some of them will even be killed by it.

    @@mikestanmore2614 I didn't say that precicely... in both cases the Dreamlands were....poorly defined. Space and time can be quite subjective in both. I don't recall Gaiman ever mentioning Cthullhu directly. And you are SOMEWHAT wrong about Cthullhu. People forget he was actually quite small in the pecking order compared to Azathoth. Which is a bit like saying a black bear isn't as strong as a Grizzly. it's quite true..but BOTH can kill a human quite handily,. remember that "Great Cthullhu" was defeated by a dude driving a BOAT. Sure, he wasn't killed, but "banished back to Rlyeh until the stars are right again" is a pretty solid defeat in my book. Azathoth is on a whole other level.

    Thank you for making this video. TMI story but many years ago when I was in college, I was going through some difficult times. My friends had graduated earlier than me (I was really having a difficult time keeping up even with undergrad classes). I had my heart broken badly and I was extremely depressed (like I wasn’t taking care of myself) which made school that much more difficult. I had years of school ahead of me and I shut down socially. I didn’t go out as my depression was making me unhinged, crazy even. I didn’t date because I had only wanted my ex back and any of the few people I would meet that may of been interested - I just looked at them as a potential source of pain. As time went on I realized as many people in my situation do that you have to change or end your former self in order to live for a better future. I had often (and sometimes still do) think of suicide but an odd coping mechanism for me is that I envision the endless playing a part in my life. The hook of Despair keeping me in a horrible rut, Dreams are a source of hope when I am having an unhinged episode in which I’ve become delirious , Desire is usually what initiates my despair, Destruction is the realization that you need to change yourself in order to rebuild yourself (this would be me exercising to lose weight, bodybuilding, reading a self help book) which ultimately would lead to a better destiny I know that last bit of writing is cringe BUT it worked for me to some degree. As I get older, I forget about my magical thinking and how at one point I lived by the novels. Weird

    I don't know what Tilda looked like in the nineties but she'd be perfect. Or Jaye (Crying Game) Davidson. Or both - hear me out. Personally, I'd hire three or four main actors to play aach of the Endless. Like having Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Heath Ledger as early 2000s Dream. Every scene is played by at least two actors. Use CGI to blend their faces and voices uniquely per scene. That way Dream (and his siblings) are slightly amorphous and don't look or sound totally the same from scene to scene. Like in the comic.

For instance: according to Morpheus...Despair actually used to be someone else. then someone killed/tried to kill the FIRST despair, for what even Morpheus admitted were the best of intentions....but he picked a fight with the WRONG family and lost, and the perpetrator's suffering isn't EVER going to end. now THERE"S a story that has never been told in full. Also...the personalitie sof the endless ARE subject to change. Delerium was once delight...what specific catalyst changed her? Death used to actually have quite the stick up her ass..what caused her to remove it and seek to become more empathetic? And let's not forget Destruction.

    Couple points I'd like to make - the focused on "living," for example - all "being" are "equal" to the Endless, with the life of a planet being of no lesser consequence to Death or Despair than that of a newborn or a mad man, and the Desire of a star standing equal to that of a being that lives in orbit of it. We do know that Death will survive Destiny, and be the last of the Endless - The end of everything is encompassed by Death taking her brother's hand. Whether she can, or will, take her own hand afterword, is a marked question, though it does seem likely, once she's put everything else to its final order - once there are no more ends to encompass, Death itself will become meaningless. I wished you'd focused a little more on what it means to "leave their realm" and the implicit chaos this creates, especially as it applied in the story. Given how ungoverned and literal seeking Destruction was...and also what it cost to imprison Dream, and what it might of cost to imprison Death.

    I like it a lot. It is core in Gaiman’s American Gods. I grew up Catholic and went to bible school. So much of the ‘Old Testament’ concerns the proper rituals for the worship of God and how to make offerings. Even the first two commandments concern how humans should treat/revere God. It creates the strange contradiction that such a supposedly infinite being would care about the minutiae of such matters… The idea that they are somehow reliant on belief gives interesting explanation for instances like this, and why such infinite beings would bother personally acting or interceding in the lives of mortals at all. :)

    Hah, the video popped up in recommendations after i finished watching the season 1 of the show, albeit i did google a thing or two. The show is quite great, but it does give me a weird mixture of feelings, particularly how everything functions in that universe and the roles of the Endless. Like, Death called death a gift...which doesn't make much sense given that gifts can be refused...death cannot be, its forced and having people die at different ages...leaving others to suffer as a result - let's just say despite Death's ''happy and cheery'' personification, i found her rather disturbing, particularly in relation to the one guy, aka Dream's friend, she allowed to live forever and seeing how people would live forever given the chance....further going against the whole death being a gift concept, when there is so much to live for. It's a very sad reality. They claim to serve humanity yet that feels quite contradicting given their unwanted roles, unwanted by mortals, that is, except for couple, perhaps, like desire. No mortal wants death, despair, destruction...or to be governed by any higher forces. The idea itself has always bothered the hell out of me, in every universe/franchise.

    Lovecraftian = existential, unexplainable horror. Something so big and intentions so unfathomable, humanity looks like nothing but bugs or simply meat. The endless are literally the embodiments of emotions that plague humanity, that we all know so well. Clearly you need to get your definitions right

  • @sorjonen8358

    @sorjonen8358

    More like, clearly you need to check your sources and your definitions. The Endless are meta-conceptual forces that functions as conditions for existence that are as old before time was meassurable and encompass every aspect of reality from every form of beings, other concepts, gods or dimensions. They were around dozens of billions years before humanity was even an idea and your attempt to limit them to human emotions only is quite bizarre, none human can comprehend an Endless, they just experience a side effect of their existence in the way they can. And to the lovecraftian lore, that most lf it's new content is today relased by DC imprunt since years ago, has the lovecraftian outer gods under Dream's domain, which basically he has an aspect that encompass all the dream and wake of Azazoth and all the minds of unconscious horrors. The Endless being objective are more "lovecraftian" that most of actual lovecraftian beings and all their alien misticism, a more accurate term would be call them eldritch beings.
