The Saddest Song "My Homeland" - Gimnazija Kranj Symphony Orchestra and Choirs

Rož and Podjuna and Zila are three Slovenian valleys in northern Carinthia (now part of Austria). They symbolize Slovenian national identity and pride of our fellow countrymen in Carinthia. It honors those who despite tremendous German pressures to assimilate managed to survive for more than one hundred years on land that Slovenia lost after World War One. The song reminds us that the land of Carinthia is ours, Slovenian. That our people, who endured all the great hardships of both world wars, are still a part of the Slovenian motherland, a part of our memory and a part of the proud melancholic Slovenian soul.

The song of three valleys where Slovenian people live in Austrian Carinthia was written by priest Ph.D. Janko Mikula, together with farmer Janko Olip. The song was tuned by Pavle Kernjak.

Janko Mikula was a prominent national and cultural worker in Carinthia in the 1930s and 1940s. After finishing humanistic high school in Klagenfurt, he studied scholastic philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and afterward theology in Klagenfurt. It is believed that he cooperated with Carinthian cultural organizations already as a student. After being ordinated a priest in 1932, he worked in several Carinthian towns. During the war, he helped expatriates and was put in jail for a few months by Germans due to collaboration with partisans. In 1952 he decided to move abroad; he learned English and moved to Australia. He had no contact with his homeland for about a decade, however, later on, he became a regular visitor.
The legacy of Janko Mikula has not been gathered and reviewed completely. It contains memorial and preaching notes, random thoughts and even an experimental dramatic text. However, he became a part of the Slovenian collective memory mainly as the author of the poem Rož, Podjuna, Zila, which is deemed a national poem for many people. The song for this poem was written by a Carinthian self-taught composer Pavle Kernjak. As a composer arising from the Carinthian folk tradition, he became the central figure in music among Carinthian Slovenians. After WW2 he became known also among Slovenians in other regions, particularly due to performances of the Slovenian octet.
The song Rož, Podjuna, Zila is dedicated to the priest Vinko Poljanec and was supposed to be written at the time of his death. Poljanec was a vivid promoter of national consciousness, who persistently continued his political and cultural work even after the Carinthian plebiscite failed. Consequently, despite striving for the coexistence of both nations, he became a target of German nationalists, particular following the annexation of Austria into Germany. In 1938 he was imprisoned and when released from prison, where mercury was allegedly added to his food, he was exhausted and died shortly after. Therefore, he is deemed as the first victim of Nazism among Carinthian Slovenian priests.

I am not an emotional person. I look down on people who cry for superfluous reasons like a movie or a sports team losing. With that said and done I can’t listen to Ernestina Jost without crying. Ernestina Jost is proof of a loving God. Perhaps she is an Angel sent to us from Heaven as God’s final gift to mankind before the apocalypse

You are not alone, Gregory. I have been following Ernestina's career from the time she was about sixteen and brought to the front of the stage as a soloist by my friend Primož Zevnik in his Gimnazija Kranj High School/Youth Symphony Orchestra and Mixed Choirs, where she performed here on the orchestra's final, and bittersweet, concert, "Zadnje potovanje domov" ("Last Journey Home"), their Christmas concert of 2018. And her beautiful singing voice, to this day, often brings tears to my eyes. 💖 Have you been following her career since she graduated (Summa cum laude) with her Masters Degree in lyric singing from the Ljubljana University Academy of Music? She is having Quite the career. 😀 And do you know the story of these three beautiful valleys, the Rož, Podjuna, and Zila, in what is now known as Carinthia in Austria, which were once part of Slovenia and still have many thousands of citizens there who speak Slovene as their native language?

Pozdravljen Franc, Slovenija ima tako čudovite pesmi, imaš čudovite interprete in zelo zelo rada poslušam glasbo tvoje domovine. Mene pa se je res dotaknila ta pesem, ki jo je s svojim čudovitim glasom zapela prikupna Ernestina Jošt. Lahko se vživim v vsako besedo, pa tudi v občutke, ki jih verjetno vzbudi pri marsikaterem tvojem rojaku. Škoda, ker še nisem našel besedila pesmi. (Upam, da nisem napisal preveč napak.)

Such a heartfelt rendition of a sad and mournful song, however emotional and deep. How hard it is to feel that your homeland has been divided and that people have been separated; nonetheless, the spirit of brotherhood shall prevail forever. This is a very intense and powerful song. Ernestina is such a brilliant singer. I hope everyone around the world has the chance to know her and enjoy her privileged voice. She deserves it!

tog hoath hi Many thanks I’ll take a look. 👍 You’re quite right I’m a South Londoner. I’ve had many a holidays in the West Country over the years including couple of trips to Glastonbury. I’m now singing as a tenor in four different choirs. Currently in rehearsals for Beethoven No9 and Carmina Burma.

With this beautiful song I feel the pain also in my heart. I was born and lived 35 years in East Germany. This was my HOMELAND I lost. Now my life is very good thanks to my own work and efforts. But my life at that time was better thanks to the people, the solidarity...! I miss it.

Emotivna pesem, ki se dotakne duše, jo očisti s solzami in povzdigne nad zemeljsko minljivost v prostor, ki je večen in združevalen. O tem pričajo komentarji poslušalcev z različnih koncev sveta. Čeprav ne razumejo slovenskega jezika, je sama pesem, njen aranžma in popolna interpretacija pevke v zlitju z orkestrom zvenela v angelskem jeziku, ki ga razumejo vsi ljudje z dušo.
