Courage is actually way more courageous than Eustache or even Muriel: he's afraid, but still faces the monsters in each episode, that makes him unbelievably cute.

I feel like that showcases the true essence of courage. Not just Courage the character but courage in general. You're scared, even petrified but you still do what's right and face those fears especially when saving your loved ones (and Eustace). Looking back on that, I really like how Courage the character really showcases the true meaning of the word courage.

@@jacksonharvey1225 Exactly. But most people just won’t understand it, probably because of what other people would think about them. Perhaps when they’re the only person of their group of friends not to like horror because they’re scared of it, they’d still accept to watch a horror movie because they’d think their friends would see them as a **pushy** if they refuse. But I believe that here, true courage is accepting your fear, no matter what people think of you, and refusing to ride that giant roller coaster or refusing to watch that scary movie if you’re scared. Sadly, some KZreadrs like Hamza Ahmed seriously say "yEaH, yOu ShOuLd CaRe WhAt PeOpLe ThInK oF yOu", but in many cases, that’s just bad advice.
It's always the sad episodes that are the most memorable ones for this show, next to the scary ones that is. The space squid episode, and the Courage's past episode always makes me tear up.

ive always loved the way that courage decides enough is enough when the vet catches him after the screws we can call that a scream but its not fear that's driving it to me if courage were even a slightly different show that would have been a ROAR pouring 5? 10? 20?? years of trauma, loss and rage? into one act that was the moment that a poor broken pup finally got to Bite back and as is always the case it with him it was out of Love for his 2nd family Murial and Eustace alike
The episode about the Vet, genuinely gets me badly. Even years later and I’m an adult now, the Jingle that plays during his memories still just makes me uncontrollably tear up.

You know another thing which is so cute in Remembrance of Courage's Past? In the episode, Courage doesn't only save Muriel, but also Eustache. "Remembrance of Courage Past" is the saddest episode for me. You just know his parents are as equally as heartbroken as Courage. He gets brought in by a kind woman to live a happy life while they're stuck who knows how far away with other taken dogs. The vet was prepared to leave a poor pup all by himself, seeing as he took his parents while Courage wasn't around. It didn't seem like he had plans to take Courage at that time, only after he meddled did he try to catch him. There's nothing I want more than for the dogs to repair a rocket with the usable parts of what landed there and return home, leaving the vet there. I want Courage to see his parents again.
The Last of the Starmakers is one of my favorite episodes(The Mask is my other favorite episode). It's so incredibly bittersweet and a change from the normal oddities you would see in the middle of Nowhere.

The Magic Tree episode really stuck with me because it gave me biblical vibes with the tree being Jesus being able to grant blessings (wishes) and then Eustace being the people who persecuted Jesus because they hated him for no reason because of the evil in their heart. And just like Jesus saying that he was going to die in 3 days, so did the tree and as a final resolve he saves Muriel as he dies just as Jesus died saving us from our sins and Jesus rose back up and we see that the tree coming back with a rose in its place.

Eustace thought he could take down that tree with his truck. In real life, depending on the type of tree, crashing your vehicle into a tree would not only total the vehicle, but likely kill you and not even harm the tree
One episode of courage the cowardly dog I will never forget is perfect due to the fact it sort of makes me think about how I am as a person, constantly trying to do things perfectly and breaking down when screwing up plus anxiety makes it a whole lot worse and holding in all other emotions. Sometimes I view myself as someone who doesn’t deserve life and the things I have or a monster because of anger issues and the fear of hurting the people I love.

I think the thing I found the most wonderful about Courage the Cowardly Dog is the fact this show can be scary, dark, and depressing all at the same time yet still have moment of humor to ease the tense. It goes to show that despite being a cartoon intended for kids, it was still able to have these moments and take them seriously, but never so serious that it'd lose its audience. Show like Courage seem so rare nowadays in the sea of hyper sensory overload show of today. This show respected the kids and never dumbed down the content or theme in fear of upsetting or frightening them. It was a safe and controlled way for them to experience said emotions that can help them more easily understand those feeling later on in life. Maybe I'm just feeling a wave of nostalgia wash over me, but Courage was always just so very special to me, it was a small dip into horror for me and I appreciate so much. Another very glorious review Shawn, I hope maybe you’ll cover more Courage in the future.
I think that this list should have had the episode "The Mask". It's a sad and deep story about DV and how it affects everyone, and that shows DV isn't exclusive to a physical form. It's a episode that I've always felt deserved to be talked about more, and it's definitely one that should be on the list of saddest episodes. The story of Kitty and Bunny is so heartbreaking, and I think everyone should watch it at least once. Great video by the way, all these episodes definitely deserve their space on this list, and deserve the recognition for how courage was able to tell a deep stories with such heart and respect for the subjects.

Thank you for reminding me about Courages Past episode - after that I wasn't able to watch this cartoon anymore as a child. What hit me the most was the guilt that Courage as a kid might have felt - if he hasn't gotten his head stuck, then his parents wouldn't be taken away, because there would be no need to go to the doctor. As a child I always felt guilty for everything (one time telling my father that his phone was ringing and then finding out it was a call from doctor's office about our grandfather dying made me feel so guilty I cannot forget it to this day) and this episode just crushed me.

The saddest episode to me was the one where Courage befriends a hunchback 😢 the way he was mistreated by Eustace was so sad 😭
Maaaan, I was feeling teary-eyed with "Remembrance of Courage Past". One thing I wonder now though: why didn't the vet send Courage with his parents? Did he think his experiment would fail unless he used only full-grown dogs? Nitpicks aside, it still yanks the heartstrings. There are a couple more episodes that, though not as tragic, still give you a bit of the sads. (I'm sorry, I can't remember the titles) -One where Eustace is cursed with a raincloud over his head, and it will only go away if he shows an act of kindness. Of course, we just see him br a stubborn grump. Near the end, after losing his glasses, he sees Courage as a little boy (looking like a young Eustace) who is miserable because he doesn't have a hat, which actually softens Eustace's heart as he gives him his own hat. It's not exactly heartbreaking, but it still is a tender moment. -Another is about a mad scientist who can't feel happiness, so he creates special cannonballs that inflict everyone with apathy/depression. The context pretty much speaks for itself, and the musical score is just phenomenal. Again, not as sad as the others, but it's scary how relatable the subject matter is.

I know The Hunchback of Nowhere had a wholesome ending, but it was one of the most enchanting yet sad episodes for me. I do think The Last of The Star Makers is the saddest though. It has one of the best endings too. The offspring fly back to outerspace and continue to make stars while the mother dies and creates a beautiful garden from her own remains.

The Courage's past episode may have been sad and bittersweet, but at least that crazy, evil veterinarian got what he deserved and Courage's parents and those other dogs got their revenge on him.
Remembrance of courage past was by the saddest episode in my opinion. Seeing as how courage won't ever see his original family that's ok. He has a new family that'll will love him no matter what and that Courage will try to keep safe til the bitter end.
These episodes broke my heart as a kid. They were so sad. I couldn’t watch them without tearing up at least a little every time. Just like I couldn’t watch a lot of the episodes without getting incredibly scared every time. 😅
Literally cried my eyes out when I was like 6 and first saw the episode about Courage’s parents. Still hurts, man
This episode shows that this is the reason why Courage can't talk, it's because he was a baby when this happened and was never taught how to talk by his parents, because they were stuck in space. And therefore Courage only speaks gibberish, or "baby talk".

I don't think the doctor is replacing the rocket. I think this is part of that theory that the show is told from the perspective of a scared dog and the vet isn't sending them to the heavens in a rocket, he's euthanizing them and Courage is told that they went to Heaven. Also, it's not a whole episode, but in the episode "The Curse of Shirley", Eustace has a redeeming moment near the end where he blindly hallucinates a small boy (similar to himself) without a hat complaining of the heat. Eustace has always been grouchy but even he has empathy for struggles he's familiar with. Both of them being bald, the heat of the sun is a common ailment that may have been a major pain for Eustace through his life. His Empathy in that scene where he gives his hat is rather moving imo.

I really love the contextual story telling from this series. It's able to convey its message with very little to no dialogue and make you care or feel the emotions that they want you to feel
Courage the Cowardly Dog is my number one favorite John Dilworth-related cartoon of all time.
Eustace getting his comeuppance always makes me burst out laughing 😂
The first time I saw 'the magic tree of nowhere' it was a rollercoaster of emotion for 10 year old me. I was happy that the tree was providing for courage and muriel, angry that eustace wants to cut the tree down, sad when the tree was cut down and laughing afterwards. I know it was a sad scene, but seeing a little dot scaling a rock then courage screaming at the sun had me on the floor laughing.
Till this day watching the episode about Courage’s past will always be a tear jerker for me
Solid review. I feel like the Starmakers portion was a little heavy-handed in your exposition, but Magic Tree and Remembrance were more succinct. With Magic Tree, I feel like Eustace COULD have wished for a more prosperous farm, but he wanted the credit. That’s half his character: taking all the credit. His brother took all the credit, and he’s envious of Horst’s fame and fortune. With Remembrance, the Vet probably tracked and helped land the rocket, ejected the occupants, and flew it back home each time. With no one to guide it the final time, it probably crashed. Definitely some sad episodes here. I’d also put Hunchback of Nowhere, Cabaret Courage, and Conway the Contaminationist on this list, but they veer towards depression and morbidity than sadness.

The star squid episode is especially sad because actual cephalopods (octopus, cuttlefish, and of course squid) go through an unfortunate wait for their young to be born. Poor sweet Mama Squid
I love these episodes so much they're good.
What makes me feel ever sadder about the star maker episode is that the star makers are pretty much already done for if there aren't any others out there. The new hatchlings, provided they survive to maturity, are all siblings after all. They can't do anything to bring their species back from the brink that won't result in just prolonged suffering and likely their species dying out anyway as recessive genes stack up. Such a small number of a single species probably cannot reboot a species.
To me I think the saddest part about the last episode is realizing that if he hadn't escaped he would've finally been able to see his parents again. I remember the first time I saw this episode, which was recently. I just assumed his parents died. And tbh idk if it would be better if they were. Even though they're alive they have no way home. And even though he'd miss Muriel I kinda wished he could've been with his parents again. Even though she loved him dearly with all the creepy things and Eustace being an abusive asshole, it wasn't the best place for him to be. Even though we only see a snippet of their life u can tell his parents had unconditional love for him and would do anything to keep him happy and safe. So seeing his parents in the end was another level of bittersweet agony. Kinda wish they all got stuck in the rocket. I mean think about it. The farm gives them nothing but nightmares. No crops. No friends. Nothing. There's nothing then for them. So knowing that his parents are alive it'd be interesting to see them all get stuck. I could see a scene where initial panic and sadness waves in. Courage reunites with his parents. That planet looks very different but we know in that universe that's many different planets that can sustain life. So what if after the initial panic sets in they realize that life can thrive there and they begin a new life. Maybe they'd have better luck farming on that planet than on earth. We don't get to see the whole planet so it's a possibility. The best part is he'd be able to reunite with his family without having to lose the one he's developed with Muriel all these years. That feels satisfying to me. But I'm sure someone will say I thought about this too much 😅

its kind of like going back and watching the Mother's Day episode of Rugrats, as a kid i never really paid attention to the actual story being told, but as an adult its an utter gut punch watching Chuckie trying to find his mom all the while his dad is coping with this being the first year shes been gone and trying to hide her stuff not just from Chuckie but from himself, only for Chuckie to still find the stuff and Chaz being a strong father telling his son all about her

In all of seasons of episodes of courage, i personally love the ep space squid mother most. Not only it made me all in emotional of the sacrafice of the mother squid for for children safety but also for her children future as well.
The bananna episode always makes me cry.

The banana episode isn’t really sad, more weird. It does show that there will ALWAYS be people trying to take advantage of the situation at hand, and to be on your guard.

@@DuskTillShawn ok
you said something about how these cartoons really shaped those who grew up watching them. i couldn't agree more. it wasn't long ago that I realized how much i was affected by watching it as a country side kid who lived with my REALLY OLD grandparents. fear of losing them, fear of being alone "again". sometimes just fear. nothing was really stable.
One thing that hurts especially bad is if you ascribe to the “courage is just a regular dog” theory; there’s only one conclusion to be drawn. Courage was a street dog with his parents, when they were most likely brought to the vet because Courage was sick, the unethical vet straight up just puts dogs down. The “rocket ship” is just him putting them down. When they take courage there I think it’s the same vet, he either is exposed as unethical or dies and that’s his “rocket ship” moment.
Oh my God, I remember when as a child I used to try my eyes out when Courage lost his parents, it was so bad that my my mom went running from the kitchen to comfort me. Courage, my beloved 😭💖
Even though all of these episodes are sad the one I remember the most has to be "The last of the Starmakers". The music in it, the story, everything with it was so memorable to me. As I'm sure most children do I had a lively imagination and I was really interested in space and the solar system as a child so the concept of giant squids in space making stars really stuck to me. I remember that episode to this day and I'm an adult now. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this episode is the reason I like squids so much.
Even when I saw the squid episode when I was young I shed tears but I didn't really know why, as an adult I still think of this episode to this day. What a phenomenal episode

😢 Same
The last one remains my saddest episode back then and now. Rewatching it now, it really had me thinking about how he probably tries so hard to save Muriel now, because he was too little to save his parents then.
Yes to this. Yes one million times over. Thank you and please may I have some more.
