I think it’s because the women on those teams are more motivated by school pride and feel grateful for the scholarships they received. Most of them don’t want to go pro because they know it’s be easier and probably more profitable to just become a nutritionist or a nurse or personal trainer or something. So they stay all four years, studying, hanging out with their friends on the team, and probably going to a top notch institution they couldn’t afford otherwise. While if you’re in the WNBA, you’re probably just jaded and salty, constantly having fantasies of a freaky Friday scenario with LeBron or even just any NBA player.

The wage gap thing also feels super dismissive of how the early NBA stars had to scrap and fight for relevance. The NBA wasn’t exactly a booming league until stars like Doc and Magic and Bird took over and Jordan catapulted it to where it is now. Like, LBJ and the like could make the millions they do now because of the crap Russell, Big O, Baylor, etc. had to face. (Adjusting for inflation, bargaining rights, so on but yeah)

Until the WNBA has someone they could market the entire league around similar to how the NBA had Jordan, Kobe, Shaq and now LeBron, Steph, LD and Giannis, the WNBA is going to remain stagnant. The sad thing is, they had players who could represent the entire league thus more viewers thus more pay. Britney Griner was…close, especially when ESPN was saying she could play in the NBA (that went nowhere). Plus, there was someone who could represent the whole league in the future, but she passed away.
