A peculiar fact is that Nogi single-handedly managed to Make Seppuku Great Again. At the time, it was widely regarded in Meiji Japan as old-fashioned and belonging in the country's barbaric past. With a war hero like Nogi doing it, public perception of seppuku changed drastically. Thus, in his own way, Nogi contributed to the growth of the cult of honourable sacrifice and disregard for one's own survival that culminated in WW2.

The Emperor’s Army, a million strong, set out to punish the powerful savages of the North. On the battlefield, in the midst of the sieges, the bodies piled up like mountains. Da : (Russian for Yes) Net : (Russian for No) Russians: So let me guess this right, you just decided to shoot up fishing Boats, BRITISH, GERMAN, SWEDISH, and FRENCH and Fishing boats? Admiral: ... Da. Russians: But you halted fire and helped rescue the survivors? Admiral: Net! We ran away! Russians: Where were you running to? Admiral: Suez Russians: The same Suez controlled by the British. Admiral: Da. Russians: Via British controlled Gibraltar? Admiral: Da Russians: So you were running away from the British by running to the British? What part of this plan did you think about? And then you lost, all, I repeat all your battleships, hit nothing and only sank 3 torpedo boats (technicaly 0 since the japanese accidently rammed their own boats in a night attack) : DA...

I find it funny that while the second Pacific's squadron is being portrayed as incompetent in this video, it's still nowhere near the reality of how much of a disaster that expedition was.
