Props for using "55 Tage in Peking" the German version of the "55 days at Peking". It's easily the best version in my opinion. Maybe it's because German makes anything sound serious and weighty, while the other versions have that campy feel I just can't shake, the German rendition sounds like an actual military hymn or marching song.

The German version is also far less chipper and mocking in the text, it doesn’t even really describe the conflict, it‘s just a recollection of the death and destruction that befell everyone there. I find this not only poignant, but also very respectful, since it acknowledges how terrible this war was for everyone, not just the germans. It’s basically a lament of even having to go to war in the first place, and an honoring of everyone who died for their country. This is why I love my countries‘ soldier songs, and why I hate that so many of them turn out to be made by Nazis.

@@shivanshna7618this is generally considered modern period proper. Actually late renaissance is early colonial times are often considered early modern or proto modern. This is secondary too what ever main period though. Like Victorian times would be considered earlyish modern too but not THE Modern era which is like 1900 until the information age/ maybe including the current information age, also maybe you considered the 1950s the atomic age. Idk many history books go by different systems. Like in their own book in time lines. I think basically it depends on what you mean. The modern era I think its offical near the start. A modern era, its definitely. Personally I have seen some like to consider the 1700s the start of truely early modern era because metal munition armor was still common. It still worked actually against bullets from range but guns got so much cheaper and quicker with flintlock systems you could buy 10 for the price of okay armour agaisnt bullets. And everything before is proto modern. So Napoleanic warfare was early modern for example but not modern warfare maybe idk it kinda confuses me. Basically my only advice is don't be strict on era definitions.

Honestly it wasn’t the lack of modernization on the part of the Qing. Quite frankly it was weakness of the Qing themselves and the disloyalty of their vassals. You don’t explode into waring states from a lack of reform. Typically in that situation a nation explodes into a two sided civil war between the current establishment and a coalition of the various anti-establishment factions who proceed to sort out their grievances later. This is typically because the central government retains enough power to crush them all individually. To get waring states requires a weak central authority allowing its local governments to grow their own power and autonomy before staging an open revolt. The central authority then calls in its other local governments who rebel in turn as the whole thing then explodes. The central authority is then rendered impotent as the various waring factions all claim to be the legitimate inheritors of the central governments power. To be idealistic if the Qing had asked the western powers for help in modernizing it’s government, military, and industry in exchange for wealth in a similar vein to the Meiji restoration it might have worked. It certainly would’ve been better than declaring war on _literally_ all of the worlds great powers for the sake of pride. Especially since that fight just ended up accelerating their collapse.

US President Theodore Roosevelt used the reparation payment from China to establish the Tsing-hua University 清華大學. The goal and purpose was to help establish modern education in China and advance the bi-lateral relationship. The US also used the reparation payment to sponsor the first group of Chinese students to study aboard in America. Tsing-hua University is still one of the the top universities today both in mainland China and Taiwan. The Chinese would be forever grateful to the Americans for their generosity and not holding grudges against us for killing of many of their missionaries. Also grateful for American's role to keep the balance of power in China and keep China in one piece through the Open Door Policy.

To think that such a desperate united defense would mean nothing politically as the Russo-Japanase War and WW1 followed, breaking apart any notions of comradery built here. But learning about such a standalone event where 7 nations at each other's throats join forces like they always were to hold out at Peking and to save those trapped there is very fun and interesting. This really is one of the greatest moments in modern history, and will forever be memorialized in every version of 55 Days at Peking sung throughout the modern world.

@@EmperorProtects1 I hope you realize how fallacious your remark is. Qing breaking after her death proves my point that she kept it together, lmao. Besides it was after Yuan Shikai that China fell into the hands of various warlords. And Yuan Shikai did supported the coup because he knew he would be removed when the court had no longer use for him. Which may I remind you was after the death of Cixi. She was not perfect, especially given the Boxer Rebellion debacle and the later Sino-Japanese War (cannot blame her fully for the latter given even Western experts were certain Qing would win with ease - indeed if conflict over Korea had started a few years prior Qing would most likely have won based on the journals of Takashima Kaemon who had close connection to Meiji officials and bureaucrats, and is famous for his divination practices that affirm the policy of Meiji Elite.)

@@CriscCiaddu .. no, it was not "one of the biggest and powerful Navy in 1880-1900" They could go after Turkish Navy or Austro-Hungarian Navy, they could be a threat to French or British Mediterranean squadrons, but that's pretty much all they could muster. They were far, far away from Royal Navy, American Navy, or even newly emerged Japanese Navy. Only two battleships were built by Italians in 1880, and (being allies in Triple Alliance), in case of a joint action against France, the Italians agreed that Admiral Haus, the Austrian commander in chief should take command of the proposed joint fleet.

How would it have changed if the 100 fays reform kept going and succeeded? How would it have gone if the chinese sent their whole force and decimated the delegations? I love to think of these and wonder how things could have changed, for better or for worse.
