He seems to have adopted a mindset where he was mentally stuck at a young age and did not see a difference between life and death to a point where he felt sorrow for the dead girls buried in a graveyard and, in his screwed up mind, thought he was showing empathy and helping those girls get a better "life".

I recently watched a russian female youtuber, who has schizophrenia, who wants to educate people about those disorders. She said, that the knowledge of such disorders is still primitive and limited in Russia. A lot of people still associates those disorders with " evil" or" magic". Therefore nobody talks about it. That's why his parents most likely never said anything, even though they porobably knew something was wrong. The mental health hospitals are not helping at all, too.

I'm from Russia, so I'd like to share unverified information about this that I managed to find on Russian sites, sorry for my bad English. So, many students of Anatoly still speak of this man with warmth and respect. In a 2021 interview, a student named Ilya said that he received additional lessons at the professor's house and saw these dolls, which, however, did not have a smell and looked like rag dolls. A student named Tatyana, who claims to have also visited the professor's house many times, confirmed that despite the strange appearance of the dolls, she was unaware of the corpses inside. Here is a poorly translated quote: "He taught me, lying on the floor and throwing his hands behind his head, so spontaneous. He did not seem dangerous. Strange - yes. And also very talented, smart, erudite, able to convey complex things simply and interestingly. When all this story came up - I was shocked, and a lot of sympathy for him. It's a pity that everything turned out this way. But I'm sure he is much more than his illness or unhealthy hobby, whatever it is" upd He is still in a psychiatric clinic now.

Doing some reading on the police investigation, the way it went on so long without his parents discovering was that he wasnt digging the bodies up and bringing them straight home- but was relocating them somewhere in the same cemetary where they wouldnt be found, and curing them with salt and baking soda first. He'd then come back for them to bring them home and make the 'doll.' Hence why the apartment probably still smelled, but not like outright death. Guy also claimed his motive was that he thought he could bring them back to life with black magic or whatever.

After listening to this story in depth and hearing more about what actually happened, I feel bad for Anatoly. Of course what he did was bad and I feel awful for the families of the girls, but he truly thought that he was doing a good thing for the girls. As far as we know, he didn't have any sexual attraction to them and didn't use them for sexual pleasure. He genuinely thought of them as his children. He was extremely ill and everyone failed to help him. Instead of prison, he should have been sent to a place where he could get actual psychiatric help. Letting him go completely free was a mistake though. His parents have already proven to be negligent. Who's to say that they're not going to go back to completely ignoring his condition? From what his students have said, he never seemed to be a malicious person. Strange? Yes. But evil or cruel? No.

Constantly perpetuating the notion that male survivors of abuse become abusers themselves is harmful for the victims as it highly increases shame, self hate, self blame and the likelihood of not seeking help for the trauma. The cause for his behaviour was delusions. Were they made worse by the trauma? Probably but without a time machine that is able to alter history no one is able to tell for sure. Hanging it all up on the trauma is for sure not going to be helpful or healthy for anybody it just creates further stigma. Beside even with people with schizophrenia cases like this one are very rare so one should also remember that most people with mental illness including schizophrenia are not anymore likely to commit crimes than the general population.
