NWOBHM was a breath of fresh air in '79/80. So many great albums coming out within months even if a lot of the bands didn't last. Friday Rock Show!!! Didn't like Punk or late 70s new wave but I don't think its influence on NWOBHM can be denied. The HM songs were shorter with an absence of long individual instrument solos on studio albums and the lyrics had a harder edge than the earlier 70s hard rock

Saxon were one of the big three NWOBHM bands that broke into the mainstream, along with Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, and just like the latter they went hair metal from 1985 until the remainder of the decade. Their first six albums (released between 1979-1984) are absolute classics and highly regarded. Saxon are a true embodiment of everything that was great about NWOBHM, and their newer records also kick ass. If there is a well known but underrated NWOBHM band then it is Raven. They pioneered speed metal along with Motorhead, Anvil and Accept, and had several consecutive classic albums, but some people are reluctant to give those records a spin for some reason, and I never understood why.
@WinF64

They may not be as big as some of the other NWOBHM bands, but for some reason every time I create a metal playlist on spotify the song Princess of the Night automatically gets added by the app.

Yes, a lot of british metal bands had very influential albums released in the early eighties, Priest with British Steel, Black Sabbath with Heaven and Hell and Motorhead with Bomber, albums that definitely influenced the NWOBHM but those bands had been around for years when the NWOBHM started. :)
@metaldams78

…and if you include Lemmy, he had a career in Hawkwind years before and even before that, played guitar with the Rockin’ Vicars and had a UK chart hit covering a Kinks song - in 1966. Hardly a new guy. Lemmy is the father of the kids who created NWOBHM. Those Bronze era albums are part of the era for sure the same way the Gillan and early Whitesnake albums are.

Metal Rule #1: Metal Rules
YES MAN!! Finally someone nailed it on a video! Most common mistakes are rules 3,8 and 9. Only thing I would disagree with is 'hate punk' because nwobhm was also very much influenced by the punk wave that was just coming to an end, bands intergrated faster playing to their songs like many punk bands had done before them. And of course my favorite rule: You're an Angel Witch!
@RuthlessMetalYT

Referring to a New Wave of British Heavy Metal means there was a first wave. That’s where I put the Unholy Trinity of Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Purple. The question becomes where to put Motörhead and Priest? Are they at the end of the first wave or are they a transition point?
@RuthlessMetalYT
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I guess we can say that they are of a second wave, mid 70's bands. But it wasn't like metal went away between them. There were just a whole lot more heavy bands that came around in the mid 70s.

Yes, Saxon is one of my favourite too but they were always a bit late from the party: In the 80's when Maiden was already playing fast and more agressive songs Saxon was still playing in the 70's style. One of my favourite album from them was Dogs of War. It was released in the 90's and it was great music in the 80's style. It was the 2000's when they started to sound more metal than rock.
