The Rowan Tree is a Scottish song written by Perthshire-born Lady Nairne (1766-1845), a song writer and collector of Scottish songs. Carolina Oliphant, (Lady Nairne), 1766-1845, wrote these song lyrics for the tune (the origin of which is unknown). The Rowan Tree appeared in R. A. Smith's Scottish Minstrel (1822).

touch my soul very deep.
What makes this scene so unbearably beautiful is the contrast with the earlier scene in which he tries to sing this song and fails, when he is trying to pull himself out of despair with drink and forced gaiety.

In this scene, he is at peace
A very nice movie. No foolishness with costume characters, green screen explosions etc. just a movie where actors acted.

The Rowan Tree Oh rowan tree, oh rowan tree Thou'lt aye be dear to me Entwined thou art with many ties O'hame and infancy Thy leaves were aye the first of spring Thy flowers the summer's pride There was nae such a bonnie tree In all the countryside How fair were't thou in summertime With all thy clusters white How rich and gay thy autumn dress With berries red and bright On thy fair stem were many names Which now no more I see But they're engraven on my heart Forget they ne'er can be We sat aneath thy spreading shade The bairnies round thee ran They pulled they bonnie berries red And necklaces they strang My mother, oh! I see her still She smiled our sports to see With little Jeannie on her lap And Jamie on her knee
