The Root- Power, Balance, Stability, and Alignment when Walking

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Root-Power, Balance, Stability, and Alignment when Walking. Join Dr. Todd Martin for a discussion on how to create a proper root, or grounding in the leg when we walk or do other standing activities. Having a proper root is key to activating the glutes and other muscles and keeping the pelvis in a neutral tilt and the spine properly aligned. Rooting will also help with balance and stability as well as controlling the transfer of weight from one leg to another. This reduces the stress on the joints that can lead to tendonitis and eventually arthritis. People who think they have gluteal amnesia or quad dominance most likely are just not using their abdominal muscles properly to create a root. For the body to move properly, it needs to have coordination between the glutes and flexors of the hip and the lower and upper abs in the waist. I will demonstrate how you can better understand this, do exercises to improve it, and apply it to the way you walk.

Welcome to our KZread video on the importance of having a good root in the legs when walking. In this video, we will be discussing why it's important to avoid locking your knees and how activating your glutes can improve your overall walking experience.
Locking your knees can cause a range of issues such as reduced blood flow to your legs and the potential for injury. When you lock your knees, you put a lot of unnecessary stress on your knee joint, which can cause damage over time. To avoid this, we will show you how to root your legs properly when walking.
We will also discuss how activating your glutes can improve your walking experience. Many people are not aware of how important it is to engage their glutes while walking. When you activate your glutes, you will not only improve your posture, but you will also increase your overall strength and endurance.
In this video, we will demonstrate some simple exercises that you can do to help activate your glutes and strengthen your legs. By the end of this video, you will have a better understanding of how to root your legs properly when walking, how to activate your glutes, and why this is important for your overall health and wellbeing.
So, if you want to improve your walking experience and avoid potential injuries, be sure to watch this video until the end. Let's get started!

I have visited other channels on proper walking techniques; this channel by far has been the most helpful... I truly appreciate that your instructions are direct & very well explained without unnecessary visual overhead & gimmicks. Your presentation is very authentic. I am surprised you don't have more views & subscribers. Keep'em coming. And thanks... 👍👍👍

Thanks for your comment, Louis. Unfortunately I have been having to experiment periodically with throwing in those visual overhead gimmicks to try and play the KZread game. The algorithm is fickle and unpredictable. Last month it gave me a burst of activity to almost 100x normal, which practically doubled my subscribers in 30 days (it took 8 years to get 10,000 and then 30 more days to get to 18000). But, then it has dropped back to the normal. It's weird. Your comments help drive the algorithm, so I appreciate that.

Hi Todd just an observation when doing this movement in terms of what our head is doing. The side that we are rooted on would the head in a well organised spine tend to lengthen over that rooted foot e.g. the ear of the rooted side would be slightly higher than the lifting side i.e. there would be a slight tilt of the head or dip of the ear toward the side of the foot that is lifting of the ground? My reason for asking is that I think my neck pain is coming from the fact that my head tilts to the same side regardless of what side I root on. Thank you....

The neck should be staying vertical during the movement, or any other, not tilting forward or to the side. As the leg roots, the spine will move sideways toward the rooted leg. The gluteus medius prevents the pelvis from tilting to the side, so one side of the head should not be lower than the other.

I have mild scoliosis and my right foot turns out along with my right hip that is twisted forward. I am just started to walk for exercise. My question is is it worse to walk in that deformed position or is it better to try to train my foot straight even though my right knee will turn inwards? I am 71, there are no Drs in my area that have any training on proper walking.

I do not recommend trying to force your foot into a position it does not want to go, because as a general rule your foot is following your core and needs to be coordinated with it. So, my best recommendation is to train the proper core movements which I teach, and that may help train the foot to be in the proper position.

Along with the weak, gluteal medias, can you also have a weak lumbar muscle on the same side when I do the tuck exercise I definitely feel I have to really use my lumbar muscle on that side to strengthen it? Also, gluteal amnesia could be after we perform a habit such as sitting in a car, which re-introduces bad posture, i.e. muscle memory, so needing to establish avoidance conditioning against exercises that ruin our pastor and balance.?

  • @ToddMartinMD

I believe studies have shown sitting for long periods does not result in fixed tightness of the muscles like anterior pelvic tilt and tight hip flexors. Even minimal standing during the day would be enough to prevent this. In my opinion, the real issue is just not knowing how to move or stand properly. If someone was dancing salsa with bad form, you wouldn't blame the muscles, you would assume correctly that the person just wasn't doing salsa correctly due to lack of practice, knowledge, or awareness.

@@ToddMartinMD then why would we not instinctively move correctly? It seems like it would be more work to move in correctly.?

Of you run with either a midfoot or forefoot strike, the lower abs are already oriented such that the root is already on the side of the landing leg,so does not need to change. The switch is in the air. You should check out my videos on running foot strike. The same also applies for heel strike. If you are familiar with the Walking Code Core Techniques, forefoot, midfoot, and heel land in Push, Reach, and Set respectively, and in each case the lower abs are already turned to the side of the landing leg at the moment off foot contact.

The more I analyze and try to understand the wrong that you were speaking of, the more I struggle with the right way of moving. I get confused, and my walking starts to disintegrate. I’ve got the posture, but I struggle with following the right steps and getting caught in all the small movements that you’re speaking of. I just get confused.

  • @ToddMartinMD

If you start getting the feeling that analysis is leading to paralysis, you need to back off of the thought process and focus on just executing movements properly, like walking with vertical posture, with the arms swinging in the correct direction. When you are moving fluidly, then you can try and connect your mind to what your core is doing to create that movement. I hope that helps.
