When Dean says, 'Something for the youngsters,' I guess there was no way for him to have known that his tongue-in-cheek comment would still be holding up 60 years later --- for youngsters of many ages. As I always like to say about Stones fans, 'We're getting younger all the time.'

Dean Martin's comedy is roasting and he is the best Don Rickles type humor. Love it.

Dean was the man!

In Keith Richards book LIFE he recalls the band was not happy at Dean's joke at the time, but had no idea who he was. Keith said over the years he discovered how cool he was and he wished he had hung out with him. If Keith can forgive him, so can we.

It's Deano's job to make jokes. My Grandfather who is a professional musician worked with Dean Martin in the mid to late 50s at the 500 Club in Atlantic City along with Sinatra and other big acts during that time. It pissed me off seeing this when I was younger but my grandpop said he made fun of EVERYONE and that was his job. HENCE THE DEAN MARTIN CELEBRITY ROASTS.

I'd say Dean Martin doesn't need forgiveness when he was right.

Reading Keith's book and he mentions this was Stone's first US TV performance. As sarcastic as Dean was , you have to give him props for getting them on. They were raw.

It's interesting how in '64 adults like Dino took musical groups like the Beatles and the Stones as a joke, not realizing of course what these "kids" would go on to do and the social impact that they would eventually have on the world.

+joe jones Not to mention these bands were part and parcel to his salary. A lot of TV variety show hosts were schmucks. There were some cool ones though like Dick Cavet and the Smothers Brothers.

+commonman80 sine you've been re-animated, i can only guess you're in the stage where you cannot control THE VOLUME OF YOUR VOICE, your capital letters here and there make you sound like a street preacher just shouting what he considers is right in his head. now i love music as much as the next guy, i love the history and the origins, i get your point, but random uppercase letters don't convey much information beyond being bigger than the other letters, making it a chore to read and understand where the important parts are. i get you, but you tried too hard!

I like the Stones and Dean Martin. This moment in time preserved on film is a wonderful study in contrasts. Don't get your balls tied in a knot over 50 years later. That was Marin's style. He would have said the same things had he even been fond of the British Invasion. It's funnier that he hurt the Rolling Stones feelings. The Stones prance off stage like pack of pansies which doesn't go unnoticed by Deano. Martin's children liked the Stones and the Beatles and he didn't dis-own them. Dean made the same kind of jokes about his contemplates and pals including Sinatra and Lewis. This is funny. Cheer up. It's great to watch the Rolling Stones in this early American television appearance and the British including the Stones know how and have taken the piss too.

Dino and the Stones playing their parts. It's all Entertainment, remember. But the Stones actually live here on TV in 64--they're rocking!

I watched this in 1964 with my family. Dean Martin was playing to the adults. The Rolling Stones were playing for the kids, like me. Here I am at age 73. The Stones are still touring.

That's how I remember them when I was the bass player in the Spartans and did warm up at the Mecca Ballroom, Kilburn and The Norweik Club Totteneham... great days!

In the lates 70s and early 80s when I was into the Stones, my mother would tell me the story about when I was a newborn and she watched the unkown Stones on the Hollwood Palace. Being Italian, my mom was a big Dean Martin fan, but she said at that moment she didn't like his put downs of the band.

U also have 2 remember this: Dean Martin "KNEW"!!! bluesmen like MUDDY WATERS, HOWLIN WOLF, SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON, JOHN LEE HOOKER, ELMORE JAMES etc. All of these blues greats were born, Dean Martin also, during world war 1!! Bluesman weren`t rich moneywise , but "WEALTHY"!! keeping the blues in their "SOULS"!! How did the BRITS interpret the blues in the late 50`s, early 60`s? Simple!!! Many WORLD WAR 2 servicemen stationed in BRITAIN had blues records sent there!!! 20yrs after WW2, this is the result. Dean Martin is almost 30yrs older than the STONES, so yeah, he`s mak`in fun of `em here, distatestfully I might add, cause a youth "QUAKE" has arrived. Look as tho `ol Brian is giv`in`em the"FINGER" at 0:50sec. in!!!!

This performance is a perfect example of Brian Jones' vision of the Stones. He wanted them to be a blues roots band, and wasn't particularly pleased with the direction Mick and Keith were taking the band. It was probably the biggest reason he began to disassociate and spend more and more time getting high, before ultimately leaving.

"Rolling Stones, aren't they great?" and raises his eyes to the heavens....Ageing singers fearing and mocking the up and coming acts of the day...a trope older than the hills !

It’s nice to be reminded how unusual all it was by Dean Martin’s reaction.

I think his intense dislike of the Stones was pretty evident. I know he was a comedian and all, but there is a line that shouldn't be crossed. Most performers have at least a grudging respect for each other, but in Dean's case here, I would have left the stage too. There is joking, and then there is insulting.

@@Cissy2cute It wasn't so much that he disliked the Stones, as it was that much of the American public, including Martin, took the Stones and the Beatles too as a joke. I know it's hard for many get to handle on this given all that both went on to become, but when they first came to America in 1964, their music and long hair wasn't too respected then, even though it would go on to become the norm a decade later.

This was 1964, and what's interesting is that a lot youngsters, like the Stones during amid a cultural and social revolution, were dissed by adults. The Beatles took a lot of crap as well, but look what they became. And there was another youngster, a black guy then named "Cassius Clay," who many thought was a joke and a loud mouth who was going to get killed when he fought Sonny liston for the world heavyweight title, and what did he go on to do?

What did the Beatles become ? All they were was a flash in the pan group who became popular for about 6 years because teenage girls screamed over their sissy hairdos and buy most of their records .. In 1970 , when those teenage girls grew up , their music was out of date and not in demand anymore , so the group broke up .

Those "sissy hairdos" eventually became a popular style for men by the 70's and even the toughest of guys wore their hair long. The group broke up because of internal differences and not because their music was no longer in demand. Their music is STILL popular today over a half century later and young people today listen to their music. Don't be ridiculous.

The boys wrote one good song , "Here There and Everywhere ". When Elvis performed his great concert " Elvis Aloha From Hawaii ", the boys were nowhere in sight . I guess they were real " Nowhere Men ". However , Connie Francis performed the most important concert of all time in Viet Nam when she sang " God Bless America " and 25 thousand American soldiers sang along with her . Connie and Elvis , by far , top anything the Beatles ever did . I am glad Connie won the grammy in 1966 for " The Shadow of Your Smile " , beating out the boys" pathetic song " Yesterday ". Connie was voted the best female entertainer of the 20th century , Bing Crosby winning it as the male entertainer . Check out Connie"s cover of the boys" "And i Love Him ", one of the best covers of a Beatles song .@@lwmson

They were nothing more than the most successful musical group of all time with a multitude of hit songs, and over a dozen number one singles. The Stones were infinitely cooler than Dean Martin ever was in this 90-second performance. And I've never seen a TV host insult his own guests as badly as Martin classlessly did there. It's actually offensive to watch, although of course Jagger & Co. had the last laugh since The Stones are still a popular band in 2023 and Martin has been relegated to ancient Rat Pack nostalgia.

By 1969, they were in debt and broke per Bill Wyman. It wasn't until the 1970's they started making lots of money with concerts.

@@luke3807 They we’re not broke because they weren’t making money. They, like many early rock musicians, got swindled out of their money by corrupt managers. In the case of The Rolling Stones, their manager Andrew Oldham, stole their money. They were teenagers when they started out, not businesspeople. After they got rid of Oldham, Jagger began to manage them, and he still does today. They are very wealthy, even after being ripped off to that extent. That first manager even swindled them into giving him the publishing rights to everything they published before 1970. How’s that for a nasty SOB?

There's nothing wrong about two different generation coming together like this... It was a learningful contrast.

You just don't get the great Dean. The Stones would have surely loved and appreciated his inimitable humour. Oh Dino we miss you and your kind.

Uh, no. Keith and Bill Wyman both had nothing good to say about the “jokes” afterwards. Dino is funny to us now in hindsight, but not at the time.

What is so interesting about this clip with Dean Martin Is how much onstage humiliation rock groups like the Rolling Stones got at the time. Ed Sullivan was never condescending or demeaned any performer on his show.

I agree with this. I think Dean's generation was still somewhat on the top of the star heap (at least the biggest ones were) and they didn't realize how fast their star was fading. He was just doing his "Dean" thing but I don't blame them for being somewhat hurt by that. Keith was spot on about the generation gap. Dean Martin was 46-47 years old in 1964. The Stones were in their very early twenties. The Dean Martin/Frank Sinatra era became old hat almost instantly once The Beatles, then The Stones exploded on America and the world. Sinatra et al. began it's fall with the rock & roll of the 50's, Elvis really made them increasingly irrelevant to young people, and The Beatles finished the job.

Anyone who lived those times would understand his reaction to the Rolling Stones, He was kind of disrespectful, but there was no harm done in my opinion. The Rolling Stones, with Brian Jones, are my favorite rock and roll band hands down. I also love and appreciate what a great entertainer Dean Martin was and will always be....just glad to see these great talents on the same stage together.

@@bambino492 I like Dean and the Stones . I like Connie Francis the best , as she had fans of all ages in the 1960s . Connie was one of the few singers that teenagers and adults liked at the time . Connie was old fashioned and hip at the same time . She could wear an old fashoined poodle skirt or be hip in a tight skirt displaying her cute bubble butt !

I sure LOVE the very early Rolling Stones.I had a 3 sided 45 with poison Ivy ,you better move on and one more song on the London label.I had one ear on the speaker of the record player back then,always Loved music.

I soooooooo remember that. "Oh, those dirty longhairs." I didn't get why my mom kept saying that, LOL!

I found this video because I always wondered why Bob Dylan, in his liner notes to his 1964 album ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN, said that Dean Martin should apologize to the Rolling Stones. Now I know why he said that!

I love how the movie That Thing You Do totally referenced this performance and Dean Martin's jokes.

Keef is quoted as saying that all Dino's putdowns did was to make them try harder. Forget Dino. This is a fabulous appearance by the Stones, the song is done live and professionally recorded. Fifty years later we can hear just how talented the group was.

I didn't find Dean insulting in this video. Seriously, the Stones were offended by this? Dean said he respected these bands since his kids loved them. He just loved making jokes. Plus, these blokes didn't know Dean that he was a man who could throw insults to Sinatra, his guests, and even the President in his presence and get away w/ it cause he's that cool, and of course they were just jokes. Keith later reveals that he found Dino cool (who doesn't?) so let's make peace.

T Wiley. that`s DINO!!! it`s show biz!!! Martin "POKED" & "RIBBED" everybody like that. it`s all in good humour. What`d people think, that DM was gonna just "BOWDOWN"!!! to the ROLLING STONES, who were just starting out by the way to an American audience in 1964.

With every year that passes, fewer folk will even know who Dean Martin was.

Ahhh.. I love the Stones like anyone else but I think it's great that Dean (who was from a different generation) just didn't get them and yes he made fun of them. I am sure the group could handle it. Dean is an icon and so are the stones. Its just a funny meeting of the older generation not getting the new one.. And also.. what comes around goes around. I can assure you that Mick and Paul McCartney and other 60s greats aren't that thrilled about today's music either with all their auto tune etc

The "COOLEST" band ever...

Dean Martin was part of the old guard along with Sinatra and he wasn’t exactly happy at seeing this invasion of British R&B bands coming over. It was new music and hairstyles and fashion and it made him look old and outdated. And he was threatened by the Beatles too! He once said if Elvis couldn’t handle them, he would. And he did have hits back in the Sixties and Seventies but he was pushed aside and eventually he could only play Vegas. And he did have a successful TV show that ran for 10 years which back then was a big success. Dino was always popular with the older crowd but the kids wanted their own music as new generations always do. Dino survived and had a film career too playing in 2 Matt Helm movies which parodied James Bond. So Dean still had a great career. Just not amongst teenagers.

It may sound like his rolling stone joke was meant to mock the group but that's just the way Dean was- slap happy silly joking around . I actually found it funny . Dean was a cool guy and respected almost everybody

@@robertcooney1938 Yeah, I recall seeing it or reading it in a documentary or something. Always loved him and thought him so handsome. I do remember in the 60's that that generation did use the word "stoned" for being drunk. By the 80's the word became known as how we know it now.

Love Dino, everyone all butthurt over his jokes. Dino never became obsolete he kept his rein as the King of Cool. He even took the number one billboard song away from the Beatles with his song everybody loves some sometimes.

Yeah, which was his last major hit. Think that The Beatles did slightly better in the record sales category (1.5 billion sold. Yes, billion).

@@Abebe345 I personally think The Bee Gees and (Brian Wilson of) The Beach Boys were just as talented with songwriting and more so as singers. The Stones too were great. All started around the same time.

@@barbarawebb7185 for sure. I think the secret ingredient the Stones brought is raw, anger with a raw blues sound with lyrics around rape, murder, deviancy and other vices. Add to that,Keith noted, their songs translate really well to large crowd live performances and a dedication to performing live which they do relentlessly honing their craft. The Beatles worked their material hard for live performances early on, but stopped the live stuff and many other bands same. I actually think there are more talented singwriters probably like but Mick and Keith found their formula in the early sixties and have been hitting it hard going on their sixth decade, not straying from it. All these bands are great.

Dean Martin's world was coming to an end. He knew it when he introduced the stones, which is why I guess he was knocking the whiskeys back.

Actually, if you knew much about Dean Martin you'd know his drunken routine was actually an act. A lot of the times it was apple juice. He wasn't a drunk in real life. It's true that Dean's music wouldn't be mainstream again but he still remains relevant today.

And fifteen years later, just like Dean, the same fans of the Rolling Stones would be rolling their eyes at Disco, Punk, and Rap. It's the circle of life.

Coming to an end? Not quite. Dino had a hit single in '64, then his own popular TV series, and the Dean Martin roasts, and he was still making Westerns and other movies.

In 1965 Dino knocked the Beatles of the number 1 spot in the height of their fame with the song Everybody Loves Somebody and he had a TV show for 8 years as well as starring in several movies after that and performing to he also wasn’t a drunk if you knew anything about Dean Martin but obviously you don’t god damn hippie

Not really at that point Dean had a number one single had movies and that was the hay day of the Rat Pack in Vegas. He was just smarting off a little but doubt if Dean had a jealous streak.

His rejection of this added to their grand acceptance from fans their ages and the counter culture

On the Bob Dylan album "Another Side of Bob Dylan" It was written that "Dean Martin should apologize to the Rolling Stones".

This one is live, not lip synced. Dean Martin wouldn't have guessed these guys not only would be way more successful than him, 60 years later! Never can tell Deano, that's why need clean living.

At this time this was considered still music for minors. Now these minors are grandparents and still listening to this.

Dino is still famous and died 28 years ago.

So glad the Stones are still around. If I had my way, I would extract the right genetic sequence from Mick, Keith, the second Mick, Ronnie, Bill, and Charlie (not much of a fan of Brian) and have them all come back again at age 20 or thereabouts and do this whole thing all over again...and again...and again...and just keep going. No matter what they've done or been through, the Stones are one of the all-time, tee-total, top-notch best bands of all time, from any time, and in any incarnation.

Insane stamina. I love the Doors and they were around only 6 years. That too is crazy stamina. Spirit of the airwaves. Shooting star syndrome. All good.

I love Dean's version of 'King of the road'. Wouldn't it have been great if he'd done a duet version with Mick & the gang?

And the Stones rolled over Dean Martin. A few years later he was down and out.

Not really. Dean continued to have a prolific career through the following decade.

If Brian wasn't a paranoid egotist like he was, and if he hadn't drowned, I would have loved to see him continue as a member. He wasn't some Pete Best or Stuart Sutcliffe, he was the FOUNDER of the Rolling Stones. No, he couldn't write songs well, and he wasn't as eccentric as Mick, but as long as I've been listening to the Rolling Stones, there always seems to be something I particularly like about Brian. Not the best person in the world, but what rocker is?

Afro'd Avenger Music Reviews He may have been the founder, but he was completely left out when Andrew Loog Oldham and Mick Jagger took the band in a different direction, one that assured their place in history as one of the most iconic bands ever. Had they followed Jones' path, they may never have even been as famous as the Animals, another English band playing American rythmn & blues.

Jon Burrows You have a point, and you're right. But like you said, he was left out. Even though he acted up a lot, and a lot of the backlash was brought upon himself, Mick and Keith, a lot of times, would be picking on him because they saw him as an easy target to be picked on. To them, he was of the lesser class, even though it's because of him that they even formed in the first place. But yes, I agree. Jones only wanted to play classic, obscure Blues songs, but Andrew wanted them to cater to a different kind of crowd and actually write their own songs. They were still very much Blues Rock/R&B, but less Delta Blues and more Pop-ish.

+Afro'd Avenger Music Reviews Brain was the right guy at the right time. He added a lot to their sound. I don't think they could have ever reached the heights of greatness that they did in the early 70s without Mick Taylor, though. Taylor's guitar work with the Stones is some of the best ever recorded. Such great songs.

Much as I hate to say it, I think Brian was holding back the Stones. He was fine in the early years when they were primarily a blues band but he seemed intent to keep it that way...

Dino,....what a hoot! That guy was hillarious.

That happened once, when he was playing recorder on "Ruby Tuesday". They did so many passes at that part that Brian had chapped and bloody lips

GREATEST ROCK BAND EVER!!! They are the foundation STONES of all who came after them.

Martin, played to his audience, and the Stones to theirs. It was a good song from the Stones, emblimatic of their early work. Brian, a touch too loud on harmonica, but it was good to see him and his contribution.

Yep and so they made 26 other # 1 singles. I watched all the Rat Pack shows and movies as a kid but their time was coming to an end pretty quick, My sister was in High school when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan, you could see the revolution, My Brother got the Beatles Hair Cut to Prove it. Each Generation Changes Pop entertainment for their tastes.

yea it's kids gainst adults viceversa but dean felt pressure so when his song everybodyhit number one he told his son pauldean hey yer old man beat the beatles, awesome feat at the time, think about it., wow.

It must have been like aliens landed on earth for these old dudes.

PaulTurbo Good point! My parents were born in 1930. They loved Martin, Perry Cuomo, Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Big Band stuff too. The new rock sound was (I love your word, indeed “alien” to them.). My parents never embraced rock. I was born- a surprise baby- in 1972. I never realized until later what a double generation gap I was from my parents. In any case, Dean Martin and the other crooners lived in the heart of my parents throughout their years. So he was always “cool” to them. I loved The Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles, so I was always a bit of an alien to my own generation. Viva Dean Martin and The Rolling Stones too!!! So different but both so amazing!!!

@@senorrefresco4141 My Mom and Dad were Born in the 20's and were really tolerant of our music, my mom was always open to new music but always liked the big band stuff and dug U2 too.

Bob Dylan said on the album ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN that Dean Martin should apologize to THE ROLLING STONES.

Weird seeing some dude (legend) that my grandpop worked with at the 500 Club in Atlantic City make fun of The Stones who are going to be turning 60 as a band in a few months. CRAZY.
