Keith is the worlds greatest rhythm guitarist and his songs are world class. He basically wrote Gimme Shelter by himself and in my opinion, the greatest rock song ever. @Juan Lopez: his bands always function at 120%, tight as a frog's ass but also loose, laughing & joking & goofing around. Part of the reason is that he picks the cream of the crop on every instrument: his drummers, kbds, & bass players have been phenomenal -- veterans of Zappa's bands, Mahavishnu, & other elite units. But mostly it's that he picks bandmates who get joy from playing, and particularly pulling off near-perfomances routinely.

I saw the Jeff Beck Group in Selkirk Church Hall in 1967. The line up was Rod Stewart, vocals, Ronnie Wood bass and Aynsley Dunbar on drums. They were doing small gigs in preparation for a tour of the States - I think it was to promote the "Truth" album. We were three students from Edinburgh university. For the locals it was a Saturday night dance. I don't think they knew what had hit them. We were the only ones who knew who was on stage. Jeff played so loudly that you couldn't hear Rod singing.

with all due respect, but I think even jeff beck would disagree with that statement. meanwhile, it was jimi himself who, when once asked in an interview how it felt to be the greatest living guitarist, he jokingly quipped ""I dunno, you `d have to ask rory gallagher".

@@barry1369 maybe, although I doubt that: I`m pretty sure there are some artists that actually believe their own hubris. my point was something else; the fact that in the creative arts, there simply is no "best": van gogh or leonardo? picasso or rembrandt? hendrix or beck? holdsworth or wes montgomery? these kind of qualitative applications are simply out of place.

I was 17. It was Bicentennial 1976 summer getting high on OG real Columbian hanging out in the woods sitting on The Log listening to Blow by Blow and Wired on Chris's boom box. It was the age of Camelot and we had no clue. There was virtuoso Jeff Beck and never will there be another like him. Rock on, mate.
