The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is the PERFECT entry Level Luxury Watch | Jenni Elle

I am giving you 4 reasons as to why the ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL 39m is the perfect entry level luxury watch and what issue you should be aware of before buying it!
LITTLE DISCLAIMER: I am not saying, that the OP39 is an entry level watch for beginners. But in terms of luxury watches, the OP is a great piece to start out with (what is a luxury watch anyway :-D?)!
REASON 1/4 THE QUALITY
The case and the bracelet are both flawlessly finished - the sides of the case as well as the bezel are polished and its complimented by the smooth brushing of the bracelet and the clasp.
The color of this dial on this watch in the video is called Rhodium, which is a deep, rich grey with contrasting blue squares on the edge to highlight the hour markers. With the immaculate sunburst finishing on the dial, you get some amazing color gradients.
The stick hour markers are made from 18 karat white gold and are still being placed on the dial by hand! Also made from white gold are the seconds, minutes and hour hand that sweep across the dial. For better legibility in low-light situations Rolex has added superluminova onto the Minute and hour hand as well as on the hour markers at three, six and nine o clock.
The Oyster Perpetual has an hour, minutes and seconds hand - nothing more, and nothing less. There Is no date display or anything else whatsoever. And Second, there is no quick adjustment on the clasp.
REASON 2/4 SUITABLE FOR DAILY WEAR
Rolex is known for improving their watches incrementally, perfecting them step-by-step so to say. And they definitely succeed here in terms of wearing comfort. Not many other watches wear so comfortably on your wrist like a Rolex and so does the Oyster perpetual with its 3-links- oyster bracelet!Number 2 is the robustness: It starts with a water resistance of 100m. The built in inhouse caliber 3132 is a real work horse of a movement and with its maximum of 2 seconds per day not only super accurate but can also absorb hits or knocks.
Reason number 3 is the understatement of the Oyster perpetual: You could definitely tell that this must have been a rather expensive watch but the more contained design with the domed bezel is not immediately a dead giveaway for a typical Rolex. And then there’s also the added Bonus that the Oyster Perpetual is available in different sizes and dial variations.
REASON 3/4 PRICES & AVAILABILITY
First let me say, that with a price tag of 5.700 USD, the Oyster perpetual is by no means a watch to start out with. It’s a lot of money, especially for something that is definitely not essential for survival ;
But often times with Rolex its not only the price that’s the issue but also the availability - but here´s where the OP is kind of an exception to that:
You could say, that there are three types of Rolex watches when it comes to availability:
Number 1 or those models which sit in the window displays that you’ll see whenever you walk past pretty much all ADs. They are ready to buy and mostly very expensive full gold models or random ladies watches.Opposed to those are the watches in categorie 2: The Daytonas, the pepsis, the Hulks etc. In other words: Basically unavailable models, especially when you are a new customer at that AD. But there is a third category, a third type of watches from Rolex - of which probably not many might know - and that is including the Oyster Perpetual: Those watches might not be sitting in the window display but most of the time, ADs have those watches in stock at the back or available every now and then.
Especially with watches in this category, chances are good that you get one of those even if you might be a new customer or this is your first watch ever without having to wait forever CONSIDERING that you are actually serious about the purchase and let your AD also know that you are!
REASON 4/4 VALUE RETENTION
Generally, the Oyster Perpetual has not only held its value in the past, it even increased it. And I would assume, that it’ll at least hold its value pretty steadily in the future, because it is a watch in the lower luxury price segment with high demand. But your actual price when selling it first and foremost depends on how quickly or not you need or want to sell it.
But in case you, after some time, just kind of fall out of love with your watch or you plan on changing your collection - you would then be able to sell it with no time pressure at all and probably get the money back you spend on it - and of course sometimes you get lucky and get even more than that!
But if you spend within your defined budget, then Rolex watches and their value retention are definitely a solid PLUS on the pro and contra chart when buying a watch for your collection - considering, of course - that you also like all the other things of this watch. Because you can update or change your collection without losing too much money when selling a watch.
Thank you for watching :-)
- Jenni

You're dead right - there is often an implied sneer to the term "entry level". What is more, you will never hear it said if you go into a dealer to look at a so-called "entry level" watch while wearing a 20K+ piece. In that case they will be full of how it is "unbelievably good value at the price-point" and how it makes a great "vacation watch", etc. But if any customer is spending 1000s on an over-priced factory mass-produced item (sorry folks, but that's what Rolex IS, when all is said and done) then they really have no business trying to make that person feel cheap...

Well, it is the entry level Rolex. But otherwise a > 5k watch is not entry level at all. Not even in the world of luxury watches. Personally I would call every mechanical watch up to around 3k entry level. This includes most watches of Seiko, several by Union Glashütte and even some by Longines, Nomos or Oris.

It doesn't maintain its value compared with Rolex, but you get high end quality resembling if not better than Rolex for almost half the price. My 1st watch was an Omega Planet Ocean which I bought around 8 years ago. I still love wearing it. My 1st Rolex was a Datejust 41 bought 2 years ago (with the 3235 movement and 70 hours reserve) with a black dial, a great watch for formal occasions.

brands aside, omega trumps rolex in quite a lot of ways to be fair. but that's just the way it is, theres so much about marketing and it affects how people who don't care much about watches greatly. when all they want is a good solid watch, they know rolex and they buy them... after so very long, took up quite a bit of market share and subsequently came the good preowned pricing, rolex can ride on that and increase their listed price further.

Only wish there was anti-reflective coating on the sapphire, you miss a lot of light play on the dial because of glare.

Back in '97, my first entry level watch for my entry level job as a staff accountant was a Movado. I was enchanted by the utter simplicity of the dial. It was beautiful. Fast forward to 2014, I got a date just with the rose Roman dial and jubilee bracelet. Just got it serviced recently and looks brand new. In 2017, I purchased a submariner 114060. This was right before the crazy hype on SS Rolex's Now I'm setting my sights on either a GMT master II two tone root beer or the Rolex Hulk. The accountant in me says to get the Hulk due to better value retention. My sensible side says to get the root beer. The root beer is so stately looking and the color scheme is pleasing and soothing to the eyes.

Before the current Rolex price hike I considered this model and went into the city centre to look at one and try it on for size. The watch came out of the display case and the assistant handed it to me. As soon as I handled it I really just could not get my head around where they got that price tag from. It did not feel cheap just not special and didn’t look or feel better than my Seiko Saab. Fast forward a few hours and I’m looking at a Damasko in another shop and a Grand Seiko was left in a tray from a previous customer. I explained I had never been up close and personal with one before and here is the difference as soon as I handled it it shouted quality, the polish the bracelet the hands everything was way way better than the Rolex OP and what’s more it was around 2/3rds the price. In conclusion if you really have to have Rolex on the dial go ahead. But if you just want a lovely watch perhaps it does not have to have that brand name on it!

Well not unless you buy vintage or super cars correctly...similar really... however buy a Citroen versus an Audi or Mercedes and see what they are worth in comparison after 3 years versus the desirability and longevity?...it’s also a question of how much you are prepared to pay versus the cash you lose. Take an example of omega vs. Rolex. A Rolex is twice the price with say -10% loss on a OP that’s -$600 down, versus -30% loss on an omega = that’s -$900 down. However you spent 3k vs shelling out 6k - if you have the cash great, if you’re borrowing, a different story. ...Unless you sell the watch yourself directly, you will lose money. No matter the brand. Are you buying to sell or buying to keep and wear? However Rolex retain/ gain so many buyers due to their value retention and safe bet, overlooking many cool and interesting, possibly better watches based on that rationale. Nobody can afford to lose vast sums. Rolex likes it that way. It’s what keeps them desirable at the top of the sales pile. You can’t say the same about other iconic and better made, more expensive watch companies. You will lose money on most way more expensive watch brands, JLC, Vacheron, etc. That’s why Tudor is growing in popularity (good quality same factory, and as affordable as what Rolex were 10yrs ago) you could buy 2 Tudors for one OP. Anyway I am rambling now but you get the picture.
