Such an amazing introduction for a character like General Hummel. Ed Harris's performance in this film was *hypnotic* if you asked me. Someone asked why the Marines don't salute back when general Hummel salutes. The fact is that he is the one that has to salute them. An honorable officer or non commissioned officer will always salute the honor guard. Honor guards provide funeral honors for fallen comrades. The honor guard also saluted him as well, they carried their rifles on their right shoulders and as he saluted they saluted by moving their rifles out in front of them, in the military that is how you salute with a rifle.

Well, as far as i know for the US Armed Forces the Honour Guard don't have a verbal command for saluting an Honorary Officer while they march with the Colours (Regimental Flag and the National Flag, Colours is just how we say it in Canada.) They instead just typically touch the rifle's butt while marching with their right hand as if they were going to do a Present Arms Command, but instead the drill movement stops there. (I might be wrong as to how the US do it, im used to Canadian Drill, Which is much different.)

It actually has nothing to do with the Honor Guard, it's the fact that the Colors are not cased, meaning the flag they are holding while processing. Regardless of rank, the ensign is always saluted. It could've been a Pvt holding the flag and the BGen would still have to salute. The notion of salute has nothing to do with dominance, its respect. Saluting an officer is for their legal authority, returning the salute is their respect for those they lead. It's mutual. Rah.

You may all like the radio communiquè, which I will agree is potent, but what shows the true character of this man is his loving nature. He didn't do what he did for his country, for his military, or for the money. This man did it for the love he felt for the brothers who died next to him and the sons he left behind that he could not get out. This aspect of love is further proven by the fact that he would not do it when his wife was around. For the love of husband and wife is stronger than any other. My favorite quote is this, "No matter what happens, PLEASE don't think less of me.

General Hummel did what he thought was right. Whether he was mad or nutz, He was still dedicated to the belief that his men died and they were never recognized for there cause. Sadly this happens in today's military. Im sure theres no crazy general out there who would put american lives at risk for such a cause but those men and sometimes woman deserve to be recognized.

Notice the very level delivery; in contrast to the frantic 'I've lost 15 men already' voice. The speaker (likely a junior officer) is downright despondent at that point because he knows the answer to his question. He knows he and his team are being left behind. *Cue flames* (Destruction and death) *Cue brass music* (Sacrifice) Its a poignant masterpiece.

This movie has everything it needs to be a perfect movie, senior actors to give depth and to guide the actors (Specifically Connery and Harris) younger actors to give the need for guidance (mentoring is a must) and a great score and plot, specifically the reason for Hummel's act of "treason"

Remembers me that there are men and women in this world ready to give up their lives to others.

"The Rock" was directed by Michael Bay, music by a frequent colleague of his, Hans Zimmer. There's a certain style Bay has always had with his movies, which he tends towards with the summer films he does. "The Rock" was his 2nd flick he directed, and hey! He had explosions galore! Even when showing the title there were explosions!
