The Road to Terminator: Dark Fate

Фильм және анимация

Is the guy with the Terminator avatar excited for more Terminator? You bet. In the run up to the release, and working on my own video covering the entire cinematic franchise to release Nov 1st, I threw this together. I know Dark Fate is just a sequel to T2, this is more just a celebration of the series up to this point. Have a look, and follow me at / rosspeacock for my immediate insights into rewatching each film recently.

Something I'd love to hear some responses to: I often get into...debate, on here, about wokeness and the supposed SJW-ness of modern action cinema. I don't hide my opinions, and as long as it is not overtly offensive I don't mind if those who disagree with me do too. For those who don't know, I do not agree in any way that Hollywood is somehow being diluted by gender-diverse voices. Even if I think having more diverse voices in any genre of film is a good thing, action cinema is still massively male dominated in front of and behind the camera. We just had a new Rambo. Hobbs & Shaw came out with Fast Nine next, John Wick is only getting more successful, men dominate the comic book boom and Mission: Impossible and Bond are more successful than ever. That's not to mention all the very-much male dominated DTV work we get on the regular. Terminator: Dark Fate is directed, written and produced by an almost entirely male team, but ignoring that, Terminator has always been celebrated for its strong female characters. So I would love to get some genuine insight into why quite a few of the comments on this video are decrying its supposed SJW/wokeness (or reliance on female characters) as a negative? I sort of get why people might (erroneously in my opinion) complain about say, a Ghostbusters reboot with women, but complaining about Terminator having strong women characters seems crazy to me.

@Tracchofyre I find these views bizarre. I don't even know what you mean about the "transexual appearance"...honestly which character are you even referring to? The Terminator that has...shortish hair? What is artificial about what it is doing too? Are you suggesting that just because they have cast hispanic actors (in a film series that has been often based around desert areas with hispanic characters) it is artificial, so if the women were white it would be fine? Basically to me it seems you are unhappy as the film doesn't fit *your* ideals of what a woman *should* be, and you felt the originals treated the women characters just as motherly so they work better (which is a judgement about a film you have not seen)?

Sure, i love strong female Characters, but the Point is: No one is there to stop People from WRITING Strong female Characters. So, where are they ? Because when i see a new Show/Movie priding itself on its "diversity" and "strong female Characters/LGBTQ" thats not a sign to be interested in the show, its a warning signal. The people who try to sell a show or movie on that message seem to be universitaly blind to the fact that this isnt the one trait that makes a good Show/Movie. They already put in all their effort in filling the Race/sex quota, why try hard with a script or Castings, finding a Director with a Vision ? If the movie is bad, who cares, as long as it follows the imaginary political correctness line, it will get good Reviews, so why waste Money.

To me it's quite simple. If you create a piece of fiction, with conscious political messaging. In other words propaganda. Chances are that the art will suffer for it. They are probably some great fiction out there with overt and conscious political messaging that are great. I just can't really think of any. I do not know to which degree the creators of the original script of these "woke" movies were motivated by an agenda or not, but the final product of is. The marketing department, a big part of the media is certainly pushing their views on the audience, and happens to such a degree, that it often muddies the waters. It's so difficult to "reset expectations", when Dark Fate is being marketed and hyped around (purposefully or not) as a feminist man-hating girl power movie. There are too many reasons to not go and waste your money on Dark Fate. The track record is terrible, chances are it's going to be a dissapointing experience. I don't care about this movie AT ALL. It reeks of desperation, and it's marketiong push is down right off-putting and toxic.

‘If we don’t win this one, it’s all over’. That couldn’t be any more relevant for Terminator right now, considering the string of bad - average sequels, this being the first film in years with Cameron on board in some capacity, and the supposed trilogy this could start only *if* it’s successful.

OrganismoPerfecto Here’s something to bear in mind about that though; If a filmmaker praises a film on their own accord (Edgar Wright on Twitter is a good example) then it’s feasibly genuine. If a filmmaker is called in by a studio (paramount) to watch an unspecified number of minutes and talk positive so his words can be used for that studio’s promotional video, something’s off.

As a lifelong terminator fan i would say you have an excellent point but my rebuttal would be : sending a terminator is the primary objective and nothing else is nearly as important. If that fails then weapons don’t matter, plus as we saw in t2 (when Arnie is nearly dead) he has a massive database of schematics for a variety of weapons. Meaning that whenever he’s sent back he can use them for the desired outcome. Peace ✌️

It's unfortunate that everyone's negating the TV show, Sarah Connor Chronicles because it's shockingly brilliant. It takes the existing Terminator mythology and isn't afraid to explore complex and thought provoking themes. The worst part of the show wasn't that it was cancelled, but knowing that most Terminator fans never gave it a chance. It not only compliments Cameron's work brilliantly, but also enhances it, and that as you know is near impossible.

  • @UnreasonableOpinions

    @UnreasonableOpinions

It is a genuinely excellent series with some very strong points that manages to singlehandedly undo almost every single bit of quality writing and tension in the last five minutes of the last episode with the single worst ending to a season of anything I have ever seen or even heard of in my entire life, and I actively seek out sabotage episodes. The last five minutes of the last episode are so shockingly bad; systematically eliminating most of the genuinely interesting characters, cutting off literally every single plot point they had worked on unresolved, and even overthrowing the fundamental premise of the series. It's so astonishingly bad I can't believe that it was made by someone in genuinely good faith, nor even the result of someone deliberately phoning it in. An ending so comprehensively betraying its own franchise feels like it could have only been the result of intentional, dedicated sabotage - and yet that seems so unlikely as to be nearly impossible. It's a complete waste of the piece of the Terminator franchise that had the most room to be quiet and let things stir, to go into the ethics and the logistics of the war they're fighting, and to look at the human characters in their downtime. Also, some of the best time travel plots on TV, though that is a very very low bar.

I could just imagine the opening of T2 as a giant metaphor of the franchise with the park beeing a happy and playful place to live and be with the kids, like most of us in the 90s with the two terminator movies (sure they were movies for adults but we didn't care), and then suddenly flash forward to present day when "judgment day" happen (or how I would like to call it terminator genesys, to me both rise of the machines and salvation were the just the planes before dropping the nuclear explosion ) and you se nothing but destruction and devastation causing the sences of misery and sadness with the fate we got that we couldn't written.

The problem with the terminator franchise is that it out grew its format after the 2nd. With each iteration after that, what made the series special gets eroded. The only place the series should have gone after 2 was the war of the purple lasers. The series is tired. The fact that no terminator since could beat a T1000 due to having a physical endoskeleton that could be exploited just shows that they have not thought of a way to top 2. Instead someone goes back in time almost everytime retconning the timeline to shreds and each time diminishes the inherent threat of the terminator. A T1000 was killed in the opening sequence of genysis ffs.

It depends massively on the effect and various other things. Spending time setting up a blood effect on set and having to reset it over and over can be far less affordable than just dropping a CG element over the footage. However, filming a real explosion behind actors just once can save hundreds of hours of VFX work for example.

Ross, are you *really* excited for Dark Fate? There really hasn't been a great Terminator movie since the first two. I thought 3 and Salvation were decent (neither good or bad) but Genysis was just bad... I'm just having a hard time being excited about another movie.

I've seen it. My video on it will be out in a few days, but basically whilst I found it flawed, I still enjoyed it and it's definitely the strongest sequel since T2 (which I admit isn't saying much).

I'm excited for it since it exists, so i may as well be. I love the first two Terminator films very dearly, and though I think the rest don't need to exist so much, if they do I'm gonna see them.

Salvation and its proposed trillogy (which ended up being concluded with comics) was the only way to continue the franchise. Showing us the future war and why the time travel risk had to be taken by both sides- and this even played well with T3 existence. But just continuing to time travel, adding alternate timelines & replacing creative plots with fan service is just degrading the franchise :/ Oh no. We need to save the Connors again! Is and always will be a creatively bankrupt concept regardless of execution.

The second one has better action and special effects but the first one has better characters, acting, style and flow. Kyle Reece is easily the best human character of any Terminator movie. Arnold is better as a bad guy, this movie made him a household name.

What's new to say about Terminator? The first two are the best, which one you prefer might vary from person to person. The sequels went downhill fast and is now a series with more bad entries than good, and Dark Fate doesn't look like it'll be messing with that ratio. Seeing Arnold & Linda again is probably supposed to make me feel nostalgic, but seeing them look tired and unenthusiastic in the bits I saw them in just makes me sad and hope the machines win, just to put this series out of its misery.

Terminator 3: It's not great but it's not terrible 4.Terminator Salvation: I liked the idea they were going for but ultimately missed the mark 5. Terminator Gynsisnos: Fuck this movie! 6. Terminator Dark Fate: Yay, I'm looking forward to the new future war of trans-robotic multiracial terminators that hate Republicans and use Russian bots to initiate judgement day.
