The Road South - Will We Make It To Morocco?

It's a new year and we're making a beeline for the southern tip of Spain to take a ferry to Morocco!
Along the way we see a rural market, we chat with fellow travelers and we run into a problem...
This is winter van life in Spain.

ABOUT US:
Welcome! We’re Andre and Lisa. A married South African couple who has been traveling together for almost 20 years, to more than 50 countries. In 2017 we took stock of our life and made the decision to 'retire early'. We gave up our professional careers and all our personal possessions to explore the world as full-time nomads. Over the past three years, we have been traveling through Europe with our 21-year-old Motorhome. Please subscribe to follow along and join us on our adventure!
You can find our blog at www.wewillnomad.com where we post regularly about the destinations we visit, along with travel tips and what we spend on traveling.

PLEASE REMEMBER:
We make vlogs, not travel guides. We don't film everything we see or do. Our videos cannot tell every story or show every place we visit. Our videos are merely a short snippet of sometimes a week's worth of life on the road and it's intended to show our experience as full-time travelers. As we're constantly on the move it's also not always possible to take the time to research every single location. We really appreciate it when people offer us advice or make suggestions for our next visit. Please don't make assumptions or be rude. To us or to each other.

It's not crowded in Northern Spain! We have just been in Basque Country, very quiet. I guess the weather isn't as appealing to tourists - but it's beautiful nonetheless :)

Happily everyone travelling ignore Extremadura which means that those of us that know that part of Spain have it all to ourselves, so a big thank you from me.

Good to see you meeting up with fellow travellers and hearing their stories. Definitely the right decision not to compromise on tyre safety too. We are familiar with the Malaga to Gibraltar coastline as we have family living in the Marbella area. Safe travels and adventures in Morocco.

Nice vlog. it wasn't just the tires that made them slip. You were driving uphill with a heavy load on the back, the way campers are built, on a road where it had not rained lately, always a bit oily then,. tires tend to become stiffer over time. The slipping made the tires warmer and then grippier, just like in Formula 1. The newer tires will be grippier due to the newer compound and a bit more comfortable. Happy travels to you both!

One box to tick on camera is reliability. Obviously you can tick that box only after you used the camera for longer time but you can search the comments on internet about the model you are planning to buy and see what others are saying about it. I live in Australia where the sun can really cock during the day and most cameras on the windshield are exposed to direct sunlight. I went through many dashcams before I started seeing the pattern of their failure after or during the prolonged exposure to the sun. So one thing to look for in camera is what kind of backup batteries are built into these small housings. Most of them are Lithium batteries but more and more new models use supercapacitors instead. They dont get affected by heat and sun as much as those with batteries so they last much longer. Also those batteries are there to close the recording when you turn off the ignition. They dont play big role in recordings but they can be a reason for early failure of the camera. This brings me to the second important aspect. If you have a motion sensor active on camera it will work properly only if you have the camera connected permanently to the car battery. They sell these special wiring boxes for each camera model where they cut the power to the camera if the voltage is dropping below 12V so you always have enough power to start the car/motorhome. It never happens but for safety reasons you have to have them. This way of connecting the camera will allow it to always start recording when you are parked if someone hits your vehicle or breaks in, it will react to any motion. For this reason it is required to be installed by professional (this wiring, not the camera) unless you know a lot about your vehicle wiring circuit. My wife and I travel to Europe every EU summer to skip the AU winter and then back to AU to avoid EU winter. So I bought two cameras, one for AU and one for EU and both are exposed only to summer sun. Same models and they still going strong.

Hope you get to Morocco ok. We were above tarifa in las dunas area years ago before it became v popular sling there and eventually made our mind up to go only to find it was Ramadan and the ferry wasn’t sailing ! I understand the rain as well we were travelling down the coast of Portugal in November and I wouldn’t recommend that to anybody as it rains a lot in November in Portugal :-). Happy new travelling year 🎉

Seems you got Michelin Agilis CrossClimate tires. Excellent choice! There is no better all season tire for vans IMO. Worth every penny.
