I love the way that Streep was able to convince Bacon how she genuinely thought that there were no bullets left in the gun when she fired into the air "to see if there was". The way she pretended to act surprised about the gun not firing was very convincing, and she then was therefore able to find out, as Bacon said, if she had to kill him or not. Bacon's response showed how he believed that the bullets were gone and that he could make his criminal move that Streep already wisely suspected he was going to make anyway. And Streep didn't fall for his false innocence speech which he of course was only gonna make with a thought to be loaded gun at him. And she made sure that Bacon wasn't looking when switching the position of the bullet. Smart move, Streep. She was right, there was a way that she knew she had to kill him. Bacon: "you'll spend the rest of your life wondering if you had to kill me, and there's no way you're ever gonna know" Streep: "Wrong Wade, there was a way!!" I don't care what some people say about this movie, this is a great and convincing ending.

Yeah, but considering that the guy had shot and killed a park ranger, she didn't need to verify anything. She could have shot him in good conscience anyways.

I just like the way after Wade said "there's no way you'll ever know if you had to kill me", Gail fooled Wade into thinking that there's no more bullets left to stop him from killing them all and spilled out that he's about to do just that, and then Gail surprising him with "Wrong Wade, there is a way!!" and killing him. That's right, now there's a way she'll know that she had to kill him.

Yes 😂 and it's the only thing different in this clip from the movie. Wade: ".. you'll spend the rest of your life wondering if you had to kill me, and there's no way you're ever gonna know" Streep: "Wrong Wade, there is a way!!" Of course there's a way now, since Wade spilled it all out on what he's actually planning on doing once thinking that there's no bullets left to stop him. Smart move Streep for switching the position of the bullets in the chamber, pretending to be surprised over the blank fire in a way that fooled Wade and made him think for a second that she'll no longer be able to stop him from killing them all.

It was a great idea by the movie director to do it that way, there are other ways the movie could've done it which would've been less convincing. And also, Streep was able to act a look of surprise on her face to really convince Wade that she genuinely thought herself that there were no bullets left when "trying to fire the gun to see". The only thing is that she should've kept the gun pointing at Wade instead of up in the air. But we still knew that Streep knew that there was a bullet left because we saw her change the gage when Wade wasn't looking. Still a good scene and convincing way that they played the scene out.

That was never a ending they were going to use with the footloose music someone just added it in there saw this movie at the theater in 1994 at a late night showing was 19 then was my Hay day

Gail had the revolver in just the place where Wade couldn't see it. And she then pulled the trigger and pretended to be surprised that she couldn't fire the gun so to get Wade to think that she now had no way to stop him from killing them, so Wade would then turn his head away from Gail for a minute to tell Terry to kill Tom and their son and so she could also use that minute to switch the revolver so the second Wade turned back to Gail, he wouldn't be able to stop her in time for shooting him in complete 100% self defense and family defense. In a nutshell, Gail was a step ahead of Wade this entire last scene, that's what's great about it. And she also gave herself just enough time to also tell him that he was wrong about there being no way she'll ever know that she had to kill him
