The Rise of the Retro Bike - My Thoughts on the Neo-Retro Wave

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In the last decade or so, there has been a resurgence of styling cues that date back to the previous century from the 1980's and back. This new category of bikes have been dubbed the "Neo-Retro" bikes and I thought i'd offer my thoughts on the topic.

Great video and awesome editing as usual. As a 44 year old who spent his childhood in Europe I can definitely appreciate these bikes. When I was twelve I was riding around on my grandfather's 250cc beater that looked a lot like a Royal Enfield Bullet. Now when I see Royal Enfield's new models I'm taken back there. I think that as we age we try to recapture those days of infinite promise and almost no responsibility, and if a bike helps you do that, all the better. Keep on posting, I really enjoy your stuff.

Good video. I'm 67 years old and have a couple of modern cruisers (V-Twin drive shaft liquid cooled), a sport bike and an old school kick start only. I gave the sport bike and one of the cruisers to my son because these days I find myself having more fun on the kick start only bike (Yammie SR400) while still having a cruiser for longer rides. I'm in the process of making the SR400 a cafe racer.

It doesn't escape me that the manufacturers are pushing nostalgia at the very same time their top-tier sport bikes are getting ridiculously - I mean RIDICULOUSLY - advanced and complicated. Long ass comment incoming - Fucking love this video topic illest. I own a RE Bullet, a 790 Bonneville and a 1050 Speed Triple that you told me I should get (glad that bike stuck with you, never looked back) and, having been into the retro scene for 7 years, am getting kinda sick of geezers asking me about my "beautifully restored classic" bikes. I've owned all sorts of bikes (CBX250, R65LS, GS500) but I bought into the retro scene purely because I wanted a reliable commuter bike that was made out of actual metal that you can access the engine and bash back into shape when it goes down. I think there's a distinction to be made between neo-retro and retro bikes, in regards to liquid cooling, LCD displays and LED lighting, and I've come to appreciate the Japanese neo-retro (CB1000R, Z900RS) so much more than the European retro (Bonneville, Guzzi V7) just because of the function these bikes perform, without the pretense. When the new Speed Twin was announced I almost creamed my jeans because it was an example of Triumph embracing the fact that the 60s are the past. No more "air-oil cooled" engines with fake carburetors or heavy ass inner-tube wire spoke wheels, just a huge parallel twin with the power to get shit done and the metal surrounding it to get that shit around a corner. I never viewed the Speed Triple as a retro bike before you mentioned it, but when I was shopping for one I intentionally sought out the pre-2010 model with the round headlights and lack of rider aids because that's what the motorcycling experience is, just two wheels and an engine. I thought I was stepping outside of my box when I bought it but you made me clearly see that what I always wanted was that nostalgic experience of a 90s streetfighter that I wasn't around to experience. I guess I want the best of every world and that's too much to ask, but honestly I just appreciate bikes when they are what they look like. I love my Enfield because even though it falls apart after every time I take it touring it's lived through 3 crashes. I love my Bonneville because it's a slow but reliable carbie bike that hops curbs and goes offroad and I love my S3 because it's a brutally fast EFI liquid cooled bike that looks like it. Definitely food for thought man. I loved watching you ride that Vulcan in your previous vid because, for such an unassuming Japanese middleweight cruiser, that thing looked like a hell of a lot of fun in NY traffic. Thanks for the upload man, as always looking forward to the next one 😉

REALLY long comment lmao, But I welcome these. I read through it and yes there's absolutely a distinction between retro and neo retro but I used them interchangeably because really I mean both at all times. You could even argue that all neo retro bikes are retro but not all retro bikes are neo retro. As far as the triple goes. MY FEELINGS EXACTLY! Honestly I have zero interest in post 2010 speed triples as they look like a generic European naked bike whereas the 2005 to 2010 actually LOOKS custom from the factory... Maybe I'll buy one eventually guess we'll see. Thanks for the comment.

About a month ago I bought a brand new 2022 cb300r, for exactly the reason of reliability. I *can* fix a bike. I have the tools and the skills, but I just dont have the space, or the time to fix up a bike regularly. I got a good deal on the cb300r, and it has served me amazingly so far. I've taken it cross country just over a week into riding for the first time. Its dead reliable, and it has the looks I appreciate, and is a good platform for me to make it into something my own.

I don't think it will. as cool as having an original body mustang or mk4 supra or (insert your favourite vintage car) with modern underpinnings, the problem comes down to modern regulations (Pedestrian crash safety, airbags, etc) which is what has made modern cars "fat". there isn't really a way you can get round these safety laws. motorcycles are much easier as the only safety improvement they've mandated are Helmets (which is clothing essentially) and optional ABS/Traction control which is small and can be hidden within the bike and also isn't a legal requirement. I just think motorcycles have also lent themselves to being custom since the beginning. think about how you can completely reweld a motorcycle frame to change the style of bike entirely. there's basically no one cutting up car frames and bodies to reweld them into new shapes.

Thumbs up. I've had all kinds of bikes over 20 years, from Japanese vintage to Italian superbike. The one thing I did not know before I got into bikes was just how much I would learn about mechanics, fabrication etc. and how much I would come to enjoy working on bikes. I have a restored 76 CB750K but I'd buy a retro like the Z900RS today if I had room in my wallet and garage.

Hey there, its this "retro wave" that is making me think about getting my first bike. I have my eyes on a Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650. Yes, that old school classic look is attractive to me.

To my way of thinking, the best way to understand “retro” motorcycles is to understand the pondering of Lev Vygotsky, who stressed the importance that culture plays on our perception of reality. If a culture holds the past as an imperative of what the future looks like, the present must replicate - and build upon- past products. We can’t move into the future until we say goodbye (or honor) the past. We can’t know what “next” looks like until we have some sense of the sum of what we know now.

Bike ownership is diffidently an thirst that you can never quench. I currently own a 19 Honda Rebel 500 which I love. However I find myself wanting every type of bike out there now. A duel sport is probably next on the list followed by a classic Triumph Bonny after that. Non bikers often ask."what's the wave all about" you soon learn that the "wave" is not only a greeting but a shared acknowledgment of the addiction that runs through both riders veins. The phrase that motorcycling is a life style may sound cliche, but that's the simplest way to express what every rider feels. Wither it's the smells from a restaurant, or a country field to the temperature changes running down a valley that only reminds you of your childhood days on a bicycle and reminding you that your truly alive. People will often site the inherent risks of motorcycling but the real irony is with the sedentary life styles the majority live, with the spending time behind screens or in a cubical, getting out and riding and staying active, motorcycling can actually make you live longer.

The retro style is popular because guys my age (50) Have an affection for machines from the era we grew up in. Fuel injection and better suspension is the main difference of technology. I currently have a cb900c restoring it to road worthy status.

I have been riding over 50 years. With emissions and fuel mileage figured into designs, many motorcycles and cars would look fairly similar. With a retro car, it is easily recognizable. In fact so many cars look alike that I search for the emblem. Anyway, I grew up with motorcycles engines exposed to the world. I love seeing the engine. Just think how tough it is making where exterior and interior are exposed at the same time. Tough engineering to make both look great. I own a 2018 Super Duke 1290r. The only engine that has BOTH high torque and horsepower with a completely exposed motor with all the safety assist features for just in case I am distracted.
