The Rise of the Almoravids

The Almoravids are doing a come back on the channel! Originating from the Sanhaja group of Berbers, a religious order distinguished by their iconic face veil, they swept over all the Berber tribes in West Africa and created the largest empire in Africa, stretching from the Senegal River to eventually reach the mountains of Spain. This first episode will cover their rise, with Yahya ibn Ibrahim traveling across the Islamic world, trying to find support to reform the Berbers in West Africa. Eventually, he met with Abdallah ibn Yasin, who would become the spiritual leader of the Almoravids, expanding Almoravid territory up to the wars with the Kingdom of Barghawata, which had its own religion amidst all its Muslim neighbors. Yusuf ibn Tashfin would later take control of the Empire and create his reputation as one of the greatest rulers the Islamic world had witnessed.

Its sad to see that the history of Morocco past this point has been plagued by internal quarrels and tribal rivalries. I believe that the Almoravids showed that when a people stay united, they can achieve so much more. I feel like people from North-Africa in general tend to forget where they came from and what their forefathers achieved. Great video!

Now imagine if Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia stopped playing the colonizers game and united upon Islam (which would be a lot easier to do than the Middle Eastern countries), arguably would be one of the strongest countries in the world in every way, which basically explains why the West takes care in that never happening.

While often mistaken, the Almoravids' true cradle lies in today's Mauritania. From there, their conquest stretched vast, encompassing much of West and North Africa, and even dipping into Spain and Portugal.

Abdallah Ibn Yassin was from Sanhaja in fact. While I respect the shared history between the Gudala and Sanhaja tribes, gotta add some facts to the mix! The core of the Almoravids, both leadership and military muscle, came from the Lamtuna tribe, those dudes were from Sanhaja and OG Mauritanians! The Almoravid story ain't just a pit stop in modern Mauritania, it's deeply rooted there. Their movement started on Tidra Island, and Azougui, their first capital, proudly stood on Mauritanian soil. This wasn't some temporary vacation, they were conquering West Africa all the way to Nigeria under the leadership of Abubakar ibn Umar while his cousin Yusuf ibn Tashfin expanding north. Yeah, attributing history can get messy, but let's keep it real: the Mauritanians' foundation of the Almoravids deserves some serious recognition. @@animatedislamichistory

@@animatedislamichistory The mourabitounes saw themselves only as sanhadja. Moreover, the title of the Almoravid sultan was "amir al sanhadja" and not "king of the Maghrebis". The Mourabitounes had the strength to invade Hamadid Algeria but they did not do it out of ethnic solidarity because they and the Hamadids were part of the same Sanhadja branch. And besides, the sanhadja all come from Mount Trara in Ancient Numidia, which is today present-day Algeria, and from Numidia they colonized Mauritania and Kabylia in Algeria.

Some people in the afrocentric movement want to black wash everything even on here. The Almoravids are swathes of tribes from morocco to mautitania! A comment below states they were all black 🤡 the Amazigh since the times of the earliest egyptian dynasities are depicted as white from libya, ( im basing this on ancient Art as afrocentrics love to use examples like this when it suits them) historians like herodutus also argued that the berbers of north africa could be the lost city of atlantis, he assumed this based on theyre mediterannnean appearance.st Augustine who was a berber church leader in Algeria is clearly depcted the same.juba is a berber prince from 25bc, based out of numidia, predates any berber expansion into europe , he looks like a modern day berber based on the statue from that time. White Amazighs are not the result of white european blood from black guys sleeping with white girls and creating a north african today ( somebody actually said this) 😂😂 although there are of course instances this probably happened, white berber culture is still AFRICAN CULTURE, return to africa migrations happend thousands of years ago, these early farmers have become native because if there entire culture and history happned 10 to 15k years ago.
