The Rise of Selfishness | Simon Sinek

There's a lack of good leadership in the world today and we've been building towards this since the 1970s. Because the leaders of our companies were raised with the "greed is good" mentality, we've created a culture in which leadership is focused on maximizing profits, regardless of the human cost. The good news is that we're NOW talking about what makes good leadership - a sign that we're moving in the right direction.

Simon thank you for noting about the importance of infinite mentality of leadership. The thing is that "performance", KPI's, "outcomes" or many other sophisticated management terms have been widely used to encapsulate "selfishness". Care, compassion, empathy and genuine interests are gradually forgotten. Hence, people are increasingly fragile and therefore losing their trust to the companies and government. They then begin to seek balance from firmer and more protective leaders (who might be more selfish). We have tendency to misatrribute our emotions. Sadly, that is why "populism", "me first mentality" and "grandeurism" ideas are rising. Anyway, thank you for such a wonderful message. As always, it's indeed inspiring.

And this has crept into personal life: people don't have fulfilling relationships because of this. I also think much of this came from the boomers, as their parents wanted life to be easier and so they weren't forced to develop personal character, of which accountability used to be a component. Growing up during the post war boom, seeking pleasure became a priority. This was aided by technological advances which enabled a more relaxed and leisurely lifestyle, as mere survival was no longer of prime concern.

I shared the concept with empathy with a CEO client of mine on the verge of a layoff. If more leaders were reminded and taught to use this as a tool we'd be in a much better place. Milton Friedman believed first and foremost that for companies to be successful they must provide a product or service that meets a need or demand of their customers and the exchange must be voluntarily and within legal and moral norms of a society. Yes, companies have a responsibility to share holders. But does any company exist that doesn't meet the needs or demands of customers? Actually, yes. Healthcare, education etc. - industries that are subsidized by the government and or considered too big to fail. And hence the biggest part of the problem. The seed of greed is often planted or nourished by the government. It may not be a lack of leadership as much as a lack of morality.

@Dan Norton Interesting question. I suppose there exists a wide spectrum of what can be considered 'selflessness'. I suppose sacrifice, whether nominal or considerable, is a part of that. But one doesn't need to emulate Mother Teresa to selflessly care about creating commerce that benefits more than oneself, do they? I guess I see successful business in a capitalist framework as a recipe. In that recipe, one needs ingredients like ambition/desire for prosperity, wisdom/discernment, curiosity/ability to take risks, and responsibility/compassion for others, among other things. If there is too much of any one of those ingredients, that recipe is going to fail. Maybe not right away, but eventually, it won't produce its intrinsic, potential benefits. What are your thoughts on selflessness in business?

  • @DanNorton1

@@LyndseyMacPherson "one doesn't need to emulate Mother Teresa to selflessly care about creating commerce that benefits more than oneself, do they?" I think one can be selfless in a less extreme way than Mother Teresa. But why should one be selfless at all, in any (even small) degree, if that means doing something bad for yourself? (And if it doesn't mean that, what does it mean?) Thanks for asking. I am opposed to selflessness (as I understand it) in business and everywhere else. I think one should always do what's good for oneself. This doesn't mean that one will treat others badly, however, as it is not good for oneself to treat others badly, because then they will more likely treat you badly. It is good for me to treat others fairly--or I will suffer consequences from treating them unfairly. (I have a lot more to say about selfishness, selflessness, and related topics on my KZread channel.)

Because you end up taking in all the hurt, that others normally project outwards, so they don’t have to feel it themselves. These are tough times for sensitive souls, that just want to spread love.

The market is the transactions (exchange of private property) in a free society. It can only exist if there is freedom, and it manages the finite resources to try to satisfy the needs of society itself. It sounds like something abstract but it's the consecuence of all of us buying and selling. Each person, when buy something stops spending that money on other things. Money is nothing more than a resource allocation system; certain needs are privileged over others. The companies are trying to find out how satisfy the society needs. Milton Friedman says that the profits of the companies are the consecuese of being effective, and efficent, in this process (which improves our live style). Many concepts emerge from this, but I think the most appropriate for the topic you mention is about salaries: The more competitive a market is (with better technology and methods used) companies will have to compete for the main resource needed in every project: qualified employees (the obvious consecuence is that salaries tend to rise). The progress that is lived is thanks to this. Nowadays we know good leadership, technology, a good work environment are keys to success. This competition (which does not seek to be destructive but rather cooperative) generates prosperity. Sorry for the long comment (and my english :D ), I just wanted to clarify Milton Friedman. I know that what he says is not intuitive, and can be missundertood. It's important undertand that he was talking about companies, but not persons. The people defines which company success (when we buy their products), so a responsable consumer should know who he buy from.

Milton Friedman was highly influenced by Hayek and his I interpretation of classical liberalism. The focus on absolute freedom, individualism and removal of oversight and checks and balances on the corporate world culminated into the GFC, which he did not live to see. But he and Hayek did give rise to the neoclassical movement. In my humble view, Keynes had the better theory and has proven to be far more successful with a system which was based on responsibility and a level of morality.

What if the issue is not the idea of shareholder supremacy, but it's in the understanding of what that means? Could it be that the framing you are presenting, Simon, is one of "away" and a better direction is "beyond" or "above"? If shareholders had an infinite mindset and desire for the organization, would there be any issues with shareholder supremacy? There were clearly inferior tactics used in the name of a finite mindset and short term gains ... yet that's not considering the future shareholders at all. If you consider future shareholders, and an infinite mindset then the tactics change yet shareholder supremacy remains.

The problem with giving share holders the primary focus is that they will force you to focus on the bottom line. The problem with focusing too heavily on the bottom line is that you will get what I call; bottom-line-itis. The problem with bottom-line-itis is that you will do everything that you think is necessary to become profitable, and do absolutely nothing you need to do; to return to being profitable. In the end, you will go out of business. Focusing solely on the bottom line is no way to run a business. If you don't treat your employees properly, they will not... more to the point, they cannot take care of your customers. If your employees cannot take care of your customers as a result of company policy, the customers find a business that will take care of them, and that is where they spend their money.

@@b1bbscraz3y What's ignorant about my question? You're wrong about slavery, which is when force is used to make people work, not when a company pays its workers the least it can.

Who is Jack Welch!? 😕 It's not so much the leaders I'm concerned with but society at large has definitely changed...selfie culture, feminism, divorce (to name a few) are all signs of a very selfish and egotistical culture

You have no idea about what you are talking about. Please be smart. Milton Friedman was one of the smartest minds of all times. Selfishness is freedom, which moves the world, how much stupid shit and "good leadership" we need depends on the stage of cultural evolution we are at. When you fire inefficient people, they are going to work in something they fit better for society and going to add more value

Cristián Etchart, so tell us why, after 40 years of Friedman theory dominance in America, aren’t the people generally much healthier, happy, and more secure/free in our society? And don’t blame “The Media” because you know that’s a right-wing, boogie-man cop out.
