The Rise and Legacy of Disney's Forgotten FIRST Super Hero: Condorman
Фильм және анимация
With Black Panther, Ant Man, and an endless stream of Marvel super hero movies coming to theaters, it's all too easy to forget about Disney's first attempt, with 1981's so bad it's good Condorman! Did I mention that it's also a romantic comedy AND a superhero spy film?

Absolutely love Condorman. Watched it as 10 year old upon it's release in my local cinema back in July 1981 - a week or so after James bond ' For your eyes only'. Love both films - I was gutted when Condorman never returned for a follow up. One of the Condorman cars still exists in the corner of a field in the West of England covered by brambles and a ripped tarpaulin.

As an 8 year old I freaking LOVED Condorman.
As a kid my parents dragged me off to a UK holiday camp. I was too young to do the grownup things, and too old to do the kids things. I spent an entire week sat in the free movie theatre watching this movie over and over and over again. It saved my sanity... I think. For a kid this movie had everything. I was pleased as punch when I found a DVD copy of this movie several years ago and still being it out from time to time when I need to cheer myself up. Its just simple, plain fun to watch.

Absolutely loved this movie as a kid. This and Dragonslayer where my favorites. I hope they will release a Blu-ray or a 4K of this movie.
Yup, watched it in a cinema with my dad when this movie was released in 1981, I was 14 at the time and enjoyed it immensely. You can still see Michael hadn't quite broken away from his more famous Frank Spencer character, I half expected Condorman to say "Ooh Betty, that man is harassing me!" or "The dog has done a widdle on the carpet!".
This was made at a time when Disney was trying to capture the adult market by pushing the boundaries of its family movies. The North Avenue Irregulars AKA Hill's Angels, The Watcher in the Woods, Dragonslayer and Something Wicked This Way Comes were some of the other movies Disney released around the time of Condorman. It wasn't until Ron Miller and Michael Eisner got Touchstone Pictures and Hollywood Pictures up and running that Disney started releasing successful adult's movies.
Silly at times, but I freakin loved it and Still do!

Going in with a silly mindset is definitely the way to go!
This was a great movie, and since we didn't have much in the 80s outside of cartoons, it was awesome! Woody was establishing that his character could do everything in real life: flight, gadgets, etc. For their first shot in this genre, it was entertaining!
Ollie Reed always was such a great, scene chewing lunatic. Even in this. Funny thing about this movies hero…he’s an everyman, with delusions of grandeur, who finds himself in some fantastic situations/in over his head, goes against foreign opponents, and creates the identity of a flying hero alter ego, despite actually not being very good at the flying part for some time. Kinda reminds one a bit of The Rocketeer.
I never realized how much this movie influenced my life. I started skydiving and got into wingsuit flying, I have a Black 911 and got engaged in France and celebrated in Zermatt Switzerland. LOL Life was so awesome in the 80's.

Still one of the most fun superhero movies ever made. And the car chase music.... just great! :-D
I was just 2 ½ years old when this came out, so I didn’t see it in theaters. But I definitely remember watching it a bunch of times on video. I wouldn’t say that I absolutely loved it, but I did like it a lot and would watch it if it ever came on TV somewhere. It looks very dated now, but honestly for the time it had some VERY good stunts and special effects. Oddly though, what I remember Michael Crawford for the most for sure, is his playing the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera on stage in London during some of the play’s earliest success in the 80’s. My family had the show’s soundtrack, and I grew up listening to his absolutely incredible and emotional voice as that character. I still think of him when I think of that character. He WAS the phantom to me then and still is today.
8 year old me totally DID eat this up. I found the novelization of it in one of my classrooms back then and read it, then promptly went to the store to rent a copy. The car and boat chases were the best! Especially coming from the era of Disney I like to call "he's got the diamond! Lets chase him"
It's a guilty pleasure for me. I bought the digital on vudu a while ago, because it wasn't available on regular blu ray or dvd releases. It does hearken back to simpler times when as a kid I didn't really pay attention on how he got all his gadgets and vehicles. I just enjoyed the action and comedy and just missed the movie from time to time. Now I can access the digital copy whenever I felt like it. There's a magic there that people who try to dissect the movie to make sense of it miss. Try finding a person's soul from the operating table and you would most definitely fail. This movie was a fun ride for me, a form of escapism that wasn't meant to be taken seriously. And this came out at a time when superhero movies didn't come out from an assembly line that honestly got me fatigued despite being a geek. It was a special movie that came out at a different time, and it made my imagination run wild. I love this just like I love Honey I Shrunk the Kids and The Rocketeer. You can also throw in The Shadow, The Phantom and Dick Tracy movies. Yup guilty pleasures. Would you hate me if I confessed to liking Masters of the Universe as well? What can I say? These films grew on me.

Totally! As much fun as Condorman is, it's definitely a product of it's time.
Why Disney hasn't released Condorman on DVD or Blu-Ray, let alone stick it on Disney+, I do not know. I guess they don't like being reminded of their failures. At the time of release, I was the perfect demographic for this movie, being nine years old at the time and being an absolute comic book aficionado. Casting wise, Disney could not have done it better, getting Michael Crawford in between his Frank Spencer and Phantom Of The Opera phases. This is a movie that is definitely of its time, and I wish I had gotten the tie-in comic books.

I have this on VHS and watch it regularly. I first saw it as a kid when a daycare my mom sent me to rented some movies, I think I was 7 or 8...so 82 or 83. It was definitely the first thing I ever watched that I recognized as completely terrible in every possible way, and yet also enjoyed for that. My first "so bad its good.", and that definitely makes it a formative movie for the tastes I grew into as an adult. I watched it every time it came on TV as a kid...which was alarmingly a lot. That absolute non-theme of a theme song is an absolute ear worm.
I was eight years old in 1981, and I loved this movie. I even got the book version of it. Has it aged well? No. But it’s still a fun watch, and it reminds me of a far more simpler time.

Condorman was great, so much that at 55 years old Im looking to see it and show it to my grandkids .
As has been noted below, Michael Crawford was a household name in the UK thanks to his sitcom Some Mothers Do Have Them, where he frequently featured in amazing stunt set-pieces such as collapsing scenery and memorably rollerskating under a semi truck's trailer. This accidental hero vibe is obviously what brought him to the role of Condorman, rather than his musical theatre skills from The Phantom Of The Opera.
Michael Crawford is so talented. From Frank Spencer to singing Phantom of the Opera, It's amazing what the man can do. And his stunt work was something else. Criminally underrated performer.

1965... It's interesting to note that in 1965 the movie, "How to Murder Your Wife" came out. The main character in that is similar to the main character in the book "The Game of X" in that both are comic strip creators that take the extra step to make sure that their stories are believable. In "How to Murder Your Wife", the creator produces a spy strip.

The draw for most of us in my family was the fact my dad new him. It fun growing up knowing that my dad knew Frank Spencer and condorman! Nobody in my school believed me but we had pictures of him and my dad together so that shut them up on toy day (they didn't believe it was my dad in the photos until later that day when my dad picked me up, which he didn't usually do but he had a day off work that day) Another (pretty sh1t) claim to fame was the fact my mum's cousin on her mums side of the family - The Webb's - is Cliff Richard, of rock and roll/pop fane, a fact that I found very uncool as a kid except for about 5 minutes when he did the song with the young ones for charity. My Mum was a fan, but she never got to meet him despite being the same age as him. But luckily it meant we never had to meet him either! Unfortunately we never got to meet Michael Crawford as kids but my sister did since she's been grown up, after my dad died, and she had a conversation with him about my dad, who remembered by name. My favourite claim to fame was that my dad got to play a nazi soldier in the Alan Ladd movie the Red Beret, as he was stationed in Tenby , Wales during his national service and got paid a month's wages for less than a week's work when they filmed the movie up there. I, myself, have not done anything so cool as all that though. Unless you count physically saving two people from dying or stopping a robbery in progress. I don't. Being an extra in a movie and knowing condorman in real life is way cooler! And my dad was also called Charlie "Chuck" Brown so he was named after my favourite cartoon character (although named that before the character was created) who I loved as a kid! Even more reason for me to be pi$$ed off with the $hite name they lumbered me with. I won't tell you it as I hate it, but I will just say it's popular with a certain section of the dictator community.

I loved Condorman as a kid. I especially loved those Porches. I wish this movie would get a Blu-ray release.
Loved this had a kid, even had the book of the film. Wish they would stick this on Disney plus!
I fondly remember seeing Condorman rerun commercials on our old VHS tabes as a child. Of course they only showed the money shots, lasers, car fireballs and the wingsuit reveal. When I finally tracked the film down as an adult I was underwhelmed. Its fun, but probably only on par with James bond moonraker. On another note, the greatest American Hero seems to have a bit in common with Condorman. Red suits and blond cirly haired heros for a start. And both released around the same time. I wonder if they influenced eachother at all?
Saw this at the local theatre when I was 11 and I loved it. I remember how cool I thought the gadgets were, and no I couldn’t see the wires. We really didn’t worry about that kind of stuff back then. We knew it was a movie, and we allowed ourselves to enjoy it. It’s sad, we don’t allow ourselves to do that anymore.
Michael Crawford who would go on to covering show tunes for late night tv album sales… this Disney era is EXACTLY where they are now minus the practical stunts and effects.
A fun movie in simpler times. I was trying to find this a few years ago. Awesome.
I remember when this came out in the UK, although I never got to see it at the time. It was very hyped, with clips and the trailer constantly being shown on Saturday morning kid's TV. Looking at it now, it seems they were aiming for a Pink Panther-style series. There are many similarities - an animated character intro, international locations, Henry Mancini soundtrack, etc. It didn't help that it was competing with the latest Bond in the summer of 1981, although this may have been intentional, being a James Bond for younger kids.

I watched it first time when it was aired in german TV at the mid 80ies and still love this movie on different levels. First, it was a easy come in and go out movie for kids. Second, Woody is a normal (daydreaming) guy who can infect you with his ideas on Condorman. Third, the soundtrack is stirring. The Prognoviach theme is 'Evil Boss'. Fourth, with Oliver Reed as Krokov they had a big name actor in the movie. He was great. Fifth, i like the references to the times. For example the roket launcher on Morvichs& Krokovs speedboat is a reference to the 'Stalin Organ', the most known USSR weapon behind 'The Wall'! When i look up i can see five black Porsche on my shelf, waiting for a "Senchaz!" Thank you for sharing this classic! It definitely needs a BluRay release!
