The Rise And Fall Of The Headphone Jack

The headphone jack has a long legacy in the audio world. So when Apple decided to exclude it from the iPhone 7, consumers were up in arms. In the years since, Samsung has been a champion for those who still wanted the headphone jack Samsung even went so far as to run a headphone jack commercial mocking Apple. But with the release of the Galaxy Note 10, it too has forgotten the decades-old technology. Did Samsung prove Apple right by killing the headphone jack?

Is it convenient that they just happen to start selling AirPods at the same time they remove the headphone jack, of course! It’s a business strategy. But it’s not like they’re forcing you to buy AirPods or beats with the iPhone, there are so many other Bluetooth earbuds/headphones. If they made their own licensed wireless standard and the iPhone could only use that, then it’s a different story.

The floppy drive was available as a corded external device, and it was bulky. Eliminating the floppy was not eliminating the convenient port for an external floppy drive. The headphone jack is neither complicated nor bulky. There was no need to get rid of it, other than corporate greed. And it wasn't just for headphones. It was to make your phone into a portable internet radio that could easily be plugged into amplified speakers or a stereo receiver/amplifier. The headphone outlet very easily feeds a line-level input to a stereo, with a simple Y adapter cable.

I remember 3 years ago where I was doing the audio for a live event and there was a "kpop dance battle" where people could bring their own music through their phones. I simply connected a headphone-jack cable to my mixer and people could play their tunes over the PA. This worked perfectly until someone came with an Iphone 7.... So I bought a bluetooth audio receiver because of this, but this introduced a huge problem: it has no security. This means that anyone who ever connected to the receiver, could take over the audio feed from within the audience, disrupting the ongoing act. With the headphone jack you don't have this problem! Only the phone connected to the cable can play audio! Hell! In pro audio we still use 6,35mm jacks! Or in arcades where the rhythm game cabines offer headphone amps: simply plug in the cable and you have that game's audio on your headphones. Well try that with bluetooth! 8 different cabs all sending differen signals and spectators who can ruin your game by connecting to you cab's bluetooth transmitter. It's a mess! So honestly, where I appreciate the developments in bluetooth technology. There are several situations where the headphone jack is just king!
