The Rise and Fall of Stroh's, Detroit's First Fire-Brewed Beer | Clip

For Michigan beer lovers everywhere, the name Stroh's likely rings a bell, but do you know the true history of how the famous fire-brewed beer began? How about the story of Stroh's surviving prohibition by pivoting and making other products than beer?
From Detroit Public TV's "Detroit Remember When: Made in the Motor City" documentary, One Detroit Senior Producer Bill Kubota and host Erik Smith talk with John Stroh III, from the Stroh Companies, Dave Rockwell of The Ramchargers and several other Stroh's fans for a look back at the rise and fall of the iconic brewery that John Stroh's great grandfather Bernhard Stroh started on Gratiot Avenue more than a century ago. Plus, the duo explores some of Stroh's stiffest competitors during their peak and how the Great Brewery Strike of 1958 hurt Detroit brewers so badly, some could never recover.

I remember going to the Brewery on Gratiot Ave for a tour and tasting . They had a neat little gift shop next to it . We went at least twice once before a Tigers game . Great times back in the 70's in the motor city .

Mr Stroh, the man running the Winston Salem, NC, brewery, largest brewery under one roof, started acting insane in the mid to late 80's. He went up to the roof, and both banned the roofers from the property, and gave them a deadline to finish. He was verbally attacking employees. While he was high, he had the brewery run, and put all the beer in whatever can. Since they were canning for other breweries, this was a huge foul, and they lost those contracts. They also put the cans outside, in the NC heat, to make more room for tours, while they awaited trucks. But, He took the break room from the truckers, and built them a plywood outhouse style toilet. He was blaming everyone from the workers, to the customers, to the truckers. He was one of the most unprofessional men I've ever met. I assume he was mostly sober, since he did do mergers, etc.

After the brewery on Gratiot is gone…. Out on the road today, I saw a Moosehead sticker on a Cadillac, a little voice inside my head said try a six pack, go and buy a six pack…

Did you also drink the fire brewed version? How does it compare? Stroh's is all I drank back in the 80's when it was fb'd. Pretty much gave up alcohol and when I returned years later, it was (and is) nowhere to be found here in Georgia. I'll have a few cases shipped down if it's similar to the same taste.

@@dacritter8397 I drank it then and I drink it now. I loved it then and I love it now. I think it's almost as good as it was when it was fire brewed!

Stroh's was a great tasting beer being fired brewed, then the EPA came and told them no more wood firing and they had to switch to natural gas. It was never the same.
